== ASANAS: POINTS NEVER REVEALED BEFORE ==
Namaskar,
The Ananda Marga asana system given by Shrii Shrii Anandamurti ji is
totally new and revolutionary. In the past no yogi or rishi could offer
such teachings. Only our Baba could reveal the inner secrets behind the
asana process.
TWO STATEMENTS FROM YOGA PSYCHOLOGY BOOK
Here are two of Baba's guidelines from His publication, Yoga Psychology.
"The process of controlling all the cakras and propensities was invented
by Astavakra over two thousand years ago." (YP)
"This effect of a'sanas on glands and sub-glands has never been revealed
before." (YP)
If these quotes are confusing to anyone or if anyone feels they are
contradictory to one another, then here is the explanation. Otherwise
there is no need to read further.
ABOUT ASTAVAKRA'S POINT
The first statement says that long ago the great yogi Astavakra somehow
discovered that there is a way to control the cakras and propensities.
In this statement, there is no mention of asanas nor the scientific
manner how they affect the glands and sub-glands. Rather the key terms
employed are cakras and propensities. And there are any number of yogic
practices - kiirtan, sadhana, diet, fasting etc - that help a sadhaka
gain control over various cakras and their corresponding vrttis or
propensities. Thus there seems to be a distinct gap in terminology
between the two statements, but even then there is much more to the issue.
Suppose a young man has dysentery as there was no other food around he
ate curd and by that way his dysentery was cured. In that case, in an
unplanned manner, he found a remedy for dysentery. Without any rigorous
research or intuitional powers, he got the point that curd helps cur
dysentery and in turn he started propagating that solution. But at the
same time he may not have known the exact scientific manner that the
curd positively affects the biological digestive system and how it acts
as a cure. In short, he did not know the how's and why's. All he
understood it that it was an effective remedy.
Here the point is that by one or another way the person got the answer
about curd without necessarily knowing the anatomical and physiological
reasons behind how curd impacts the human body. Indeed, it might take a
huge amount of time and a big laboratory to find out how and why the
dysentery was removed - i.e. what was the chemical reaction in the gut.
Only he knows that the curd helped.
So there are two things: (1) Discovering the right medicine itself and
(2) the scientific knowledge of how the medicine impacts the human body
and mind.
Most of the ayurvedic medicines are created in this first manner. By
trial and error or even by chance, people discover a medicine for a
certain ailment. Same is the case with so many present day scientists.
They do research and find that a particular behaviour may be the
critical cause of a disease like Alzherimers etc, but most often they do
not know the scientific explanation and processes involved. It may take
decades and hundreds of years to figure out exactly how Alzheimer
disease is caused.
In a similar way Astavakra came to know that one can control the cakras
etc, but how it is done and how it affects the glands sub-glands he did
not know. Yet it is this latter point that provides the full rational
explanation.
MORE REVIEW
Let's take another common example.
It is akin to having the ability to drive a car yet not knowing how the
brakes work. People know how to use the brakes but they cannot explain
how they function, i.e. how the brake shoes create friction on the
spinning wheel and ultimately stop the vehicle. Same is the case with
honking the horn; people know how to use the horn but they cannot
explain how it works.
Hence while it is certainly true that Astavakra discovered ways to
control the cakras and propensities - whether it be satsaunga, sadhana,
food, daily thinking, or particular asana etc - but he did not
necessarily understand the science behind how asanas affects the glands
and sub-glands.
It is just like how thousands of years ago villagers knew that by
throwing a rock at a fruit tree then a piece of fruit will come loose
and fall down. But it was not until centuries later that someone
discovered gravity as being the force behind it all.
In both cases, the result is the same: The fruit is falling but the
villager does not know the theory of gravity; similarly, Astavakra knew
that asanas were helpful but he did not know what true effect they had
on the glands and sub-glands.
THEY DID NOT KNOW THE INNER SCIENCE
So although yoga asanas themselves are ancient, those yogis did not know
the inner workings. They did not know how asanas, like bhujaungasana,
create pressure and / or depressure on a certain region whereby the
corresponding glands then secrete specific hormones and by that way the
vrttis get positively or negatively affected. So the new thing which
Baba has given is the inner working of the glands and subglands. This
bigger science they did not know; it takes a bigger
scientific-cum-intuitional mind to understand the matter of glands and
subglands.
BABA IS THE FIRST
Now, for the first time in human history, in His revolutionary manner,
Baba is revealing the inner science about how asanas affect the glands
and sub-glands.
He has told about asanas and the subtle way in which they affect the
glands and sub-glands. Baba remarks how our AM philosophy is the first
to ever explain the way asanas affect the glands. In the past, so many
yogis were practicing asanas, no doubt, but they did not know the way
those asanas affected the human structure with respect to glands &
sub-glands. And the answer is that each pose applies pressure and
depressure on various cakras, glands and sub-glands.
Hence, there appears to be no contradiction in these two statements:
(a) "The process of controlling all the cakras and propensities was
invented by Astavakra over two thousand years ago."
(b) "This effect of a'sanas on glands and sub-glands has never been
revealed before."
The fact that 2000 years ago Astavakra came to know, by some experiment
or circumstance, the technique to control the cakras and propensities
does not in any way undermine the fact that Baba is the first to reveal
the inner workings of asanas and their effect on the glandular system.
The above two statements are not mutually exclusive.
Namaskar,
Girish

Animals or Humans
Baba says, "Those who have established themselves in their spiritual
being through the practice of spiritual cult are the real human beings.
Others, who do not move on the subtler and sublime path of spirituality,
and behave like animals, are humans only in name. Human beings alone
have the privilege to do sa'dhana'. Animals, because of their
intellectual deficiencies, are unable to adhere to the spiritual cult..."
"Human beings, on the other hand, have the capacity to develop even in
the spiritual realm. Those who do not pay heed to this special gift are
animals, nay, even worse than animals. Animals are unable to make
efforts for their spiritual development, whereas humans do have this
ability." (SS-24)
Note: Modern medical science classifies everyone with a human body as
being human, but according to Baba's above teaching all are not human.
In the above guideline Baba differentiates how and why.
