== RE: STORY OF DEMON'S KITCHEN & SS DELHI ==

~ Part 2 ~

(This is the second letter in this series; a link to the first letter is below; the following text is an excerpt from the first letter. - Eds)

"When margiis attend DMS, they go for 3 days. But Wts allot 7 days for their stay at DMS. They have 2 days before the actual DMS, 2 days after, as well as the 3 main days of DMS. So they stay at Ananda Nagar for a total of 7 days.

Unfortunately at the recent Ranchi DMS gathering in Ananda Nagar, the mass of workers paid Delhi SS (Ranchi), i.e. Dada Amaleshananda, for their food and meals, yet SS shut down the kitchen during DMS - i.e. the middle 3 days. So general workers were not given food during this period; plus there was a water shortage. Yet side by side SS Dada arranged for a special chef to prepare food for top dadas.

There were many issues and certainly one key matter is: "haves" vs "have-nots". Specifically certain in-charges treated themselves to delicious delicacies while the general workers were the have-nots, deprived of food during DMS. They were forced to find food for themselves."

Namaskar,
The food situation for general Wts at DMS was unacceptable; here is further reporting about what transpired. First I wish to also add that, I found the comparison of SS and other top Dadas with the demon king to be totally appropriate.

FOOD NOT PROVIDED TO GENERAL WTS AT DMS

At the May 2012 DMS in Ananda Nagar, SS Delhi Dada Amaleshananda collected 200 rupees from all workers for their food in Ananda Nagar during their 7-day stay. For the first two days and the last two days, sub-standard food was provided for workers. But during the middle three days when the actual DMS was going on, SS Dada closed down the kitchen entirely. That meant there was no food for general workers.

All those field workers then had no access to food during DMS.

Workers were left to wander around looking to feed themselves; plus, there was a serious water shortage. It was an awful condition; and yet our wts had paid for 7 days worth of food. But SS Dada did not arrange for even a single mouthful of food to be served during the 3 middle days of their DMS stay. So our wt workers were left to scrounge around for food. And during the extreme summer heat, water was scarce. All in all, it was a very uncomfortable and inhumane way to treat our workers.

BIG DADAS HAVE THEIR OWN PRIVATE CHEF & SPECIAL SELECTIONS

Yet, side by side, for top Dadas, SS Delhi Amaleshananda arranged a special chef and made sure that high-quality food was served throughout the entire DMS. That means those bosses and big dadas received special, royal treatment: Tasty, sumptuous food for each and every meal prepared for them by a qualified and trained chef. Plus they had boxes and boxes of purified, bottled water during this summer DMS where temperatures reached high levels.

So those big dadas had top-grade provisions for food and drink, while the mass of wt workers were not given any food during the middle three days of their DMS stay - and sub-standard food the other days.

ALL MONEY DIVERTED SOMEWHERE ELSE

This led to a lot of anxiety and frustration amongst the general wts. Their bosses had collected money from them, yet during the 3 days of DMS those same bosses spent that money on fancy meals for themselves, while general workers were deprived even basic food. The whole situation was shameful.

SS collected money from margiis, and non-margiis to feed wts at DMS. Various schools, and BPs also generously donated for the cause, yet that money was funneled somewhere else. People consciously donated money specifically for worker meals during their DMS stay, yet that money was used by big dadas in a separate manner.

Such is the selfish and greedy quality of those top workers. Again, this entire situation of extreme inequality was put into motion by SS Dada and his seniors at the recent summer DMS in Ananda Nagar.

Namaskar,
Mahitosh

"Toma're cineo cena' da'y..."   - P.S. 1056

Purport:

Baba, even after seeing You, to truly recognize You is very difficult. Just when I think that I have understood You, and feel that on the strength of my intellect I understand everything, You make me realise my foolishness by secretly giving a blow to my ego. Baba, when I think that I can get anything by purchasing it with my wealth, then by showing me amu'ly ma'ni [1] You make me understand my extreme poverty. Baba, You can only be recognised when You desire; in that situation You will shower Your grace. Only then can anyone realise You...

END NOTES FOR PRABHAT SAMGIITA #1056:

[1] Amu'ly Man'i = Literally meaning priceless jewels, but the true meaning is that supreme spiritual wealth which can't be purchased with worldly riches.

Note: In this above Prabhat Samgiita Baba is teaching us that not everything can be understood with the intellect; the human intellect has its inherent  limitation. Second, material wealth also has its inherent limitation. With the strength of worldly wealth one cannot do everything. One cannot fulfill all the longings nor all the desires. Money is not the be-all and end-all of life. So people should be alert.

== STORY OF DEMON'S KITCHEN & SS DELHI ==

Namaskar,

So they stay at Ananda Nagar for a total of 7 days.

There were many issues and certainly one key matter is: "haves" vs "have-nots". Specifically certain in-charges treated themselves to delicious delicacies while the general workers were the have-nots, deprived of food during DMS. They were forced to find food for themselves.

A critical report on this issue is noted below.

First however we should review Baba's teachings on this important matter.

BABA STORY ABOUT DEMON KING'S GREEDINESS:

HOW HE HOARDED DELICACIES FOR HIMSELF

In His book "The Golden Lotus of the Blue Sea", Baba describes very colourfully how the demon indulges in sumptuous feasting while his staff is left to starve.

In this particular story, the demon king hoards huge amounts of food and luxuries and leaves his staff to starve: They are deprived of basic food and suffer from malnutrition. It seems similar things are happening with our top dadas.

Here the villain demon is introducing the hero guest, i.e. the prince, to his [the demon's] daily menu.

"Do you know what our daily menu is? We eat golden cakes fried in clarified butter, Pearl water mixed with coconut kernel, spiced Parble curry with salmon fish made of platinum and in the morning we brush our teeth with diamond powder!”

The prince asked, “Is there such an arrangement for everyone here?”

The demon said, “This arrangement is for us only – that is, for those who are learned, intellectual, rich, highborn and aristocratic. Those with whom you associate due to your ignorance – those poor, mean and illiterate people – where would they get such things? They neither know how to cook nor eat. They eat stale rice and scorched eggfruit and they brush their teeth with ash.”"

"The next day the prince went to the demon’s palace on invitation. He went there reluctantly, out of sheer courtesy. When he arrived, he found that there was a royal feast. Before him were spread so many dishes and bowls, some of gold, some of silver, some studded with diamonds, all finely carved. He did not even know the names of all the pots and utensils! The distance between some of the dishes was not less than one mile. There were some telescopes also to see the foods kept in the distant dishes. The prince was not familiar with most of the dishes served."

"Fancy rice, fried vegetables, green vegetables, mixed vegetables, breaded vegetables, seven hundred types of curry, roasted meats, braised meats, shik kabab, and besides these, something he could recognize very well – mangoes!"

"There were small langra mangoes of Hazipur, Dasherii mangoes of Lucknow, Alfonso mangoes of Bombay, yellow Jardalu mangoes of Bhagalpur, Fazli mangoes of Malda, Ranipasand, Begampasand, and Kohitoor mangoes of Murshidabad, Sarikhas mangoes of Hooghly, Pearafuli mangoes of Sheorafuli, Begunfuli mangoes of Madras, and so many other kinds as well!"

"Then there were lechees of Saharanpur, Muzzafarpur and Baruipur, watermelons from Lucknow, halwa-sweets; Rabri of Vrindaban, cream sweets, Ghevar sweets of Rajasthan, Shonpapri; Kalakanda Paura from Gaya and Deoghar, Morabba (Jam) from Suri, white milk sweet of Mankar, Sitabhog and Mihidana from Bardhaman, Gaja from Chandannagar, Khaichur of Janai-Dhanekhaii Langcha of Shaktigarh, tasty puffed rice balls from Jayanagar, Sarbhaja-sarpuria of Krsnanagar, Manohara from Beidanga, Chanabara; chanar-jellabee and Raskadamba from Murshidabad, curds from Natore and Nababganj, sweet rice pudding from Dacca, chandanchurd from Pabna, kancagolla of Muragacha (Nadia) and sweet laddu of Delhi..."

In this above section, you have read how the greedy demon was indulging in all kinds of tasty foods.

BABA STORY ABOUT DEMON KING'S GREEDINESS:

HOW HE MERCILESSLY DEPRIVED OTHERS OF FOOD

Now here read below how the demon's own staff was living. They were suffering from severe hunger and malnutrition as they were not allowed to eat any of the wonderful food they cooked for the demon king; rather forced to eat spoiled, rotten food. This was their pitiful condition.

"Let me see those cooks, servants and pages who prepared such delicious dishes and served them so elegantly,” [the hero guest] thought. While passing by the servants’ quarters [of the demon's staff], he suddenly reached the place where the kitchen staff were eating together after the day’s hard labour. They were quite exhausted. Those who had cooked so wonderfully and served so carefully were eating only stale rice, scorched eggfruit and the sour sauce of some leaves, perhaps tamarind."

Finally the hero guest, i.e. the prince, retires for the evening but is unable to sleep, thinking of all those starving people.

"The prince returned to his cottage with a heavy heart. So many thoughts were running in his brain. He was thinking that he had made a great mistake to eat and drink such delicious food and drink cooked and served by those poor people. The beautiful eyes of the prince were deprived of sleep that night. He was thinking continuously, “If I cannot free humanity from such meanness, what is the use of my education, my intellect? My coming to this earth as a human being bears no value.”"

Here in this story Baba is telling us that how degraded demons eat voraciously and do not care about their staff nor their fellow brothers and sisters. Rather they continue to exploit them.

In other words, we can say clearly that Baba is teaching us that we should treat all with respect and not create a two-tiered system of "haves" and "have nots" on the point of food etc. That is not the way for leaders of society to live - indeed those who contravene this rule are nothing but the enemies of humanity.

Baba says, "A few become rich and others become poor. In such a condition millions die without food, live without shelter, work without education, suffer without medicine and move without proper clothing. The society then splits into two distinct groups – haves and have-nots. The former is the class of exploiters – the capitalists – and the latter is the class of the exploited." (A Few Problems Solved - 8)

This above quote parallels what was going on at the recent DMS: How some Dadas were enjoying exotic dishes while others were not even getting basic food and almost starving.

Namaskar,
Ram Sahay

"(Tumi) esechile mor bakul-bita'ne na' baliya' ka'r ghare..." (PS 4320)

Purport:

Baba, that time the place was surrounded by innumerable bakul flowers which in bloom, and You graced me by coming to my cottage during that verdant spring season. With Your divine grace, You brought devotional horripilation (goose bumps) throughout my entire existence, and You also vibrated the very pulsation of my blood. Baba, by having You in such an intimate and close way, my life has become meaningful. It is Your grace. Baba, soon after that golden dawn, Your liila moved into a different phase. Because then You went away leaving me crying all alone. O' my dearmost where did You go that time.

Baba, since then I have spent countless days and nights waiting - sitting by my window threading heaps of flower garlands for You. But that was all in vain because You did not come. It is painful that now I no longer see that attractive & charming smile because You are keeping Yourself distant. Now I no longer see that radiant smile which I used to see on Your lips when You were with me.

Baba, in longing for You, ages have passed since You came close. Springtime has finished and now summer has come. My entire garden of those sweet, fragrant bakul flowers has dried up and withered away in this hot season [1]. Now that same window - where I used to sit and make garlands for You and wait - is full of spider webs. Baba, it is so painful and heartbreaking how You have gone so far away. And my mind is completely dry in the absence of Your divine presence.

O' my Dearmost, please shower Your causeless grace and appear in my heart in a very intimate and charming way...

END NOTES FOR PRABHAT SAMGIITA #4320:

[1] Hot Season: In the absence of His presence, the sadhaka feels a distinct dryness in his heart. Summer season - or hot season - has been used as a metaphor in this song to express that dryness in the devotee's heart, where one's devotional feeling is lower. And this happens with each and every sadhaka. When one feels dry and out of their spiritual flow then that is the dry or summer season. In contrast, when one's flow of sadhana is good then that can be compared with springtime where everything is lush and verdant. In their dhya'na they feel greater proximity with Parama Purusa - that is why it is compared with springtime. But when one is experiencing the dryness of summer, that spiritual flow is not there. In that case, the best thing a devotee can do is to sincerely request Baba to grace them by coming in their meditation.

== EXPLOITED TRAINEES OF VARANASI TC ==

                                       ~ Part 2 ~

Namaskar,
This is the second part of our investigative report on the conditions of our trainees at the Varanasi WT training centre.

As you may recall the first letter detailed how trainees were given old, dirty clothes to wear and deprived of even the most basic foods. Plus other issues were raised including the very dramatic story of dharma samiiska. A link to the first letter is noted below.

Here in this second letter further matters are explored.

                         AGE OF IDEALISM

We must remember that our trainees are youths - mostly teenagers - and they arrive at our doorstep with tremendous idealism. They want to do something to change the world and serve Baba. They have a mind, a heart and they have feelings. They know a little about Ananda Marga yet have a strong desire to know more. That is why they have come - that is why they have chosen to dedicate their life. They have come in search of living for a high ideal.

                    NOT EVEN ALLOWED TO TALK

Of course it is our duty to create a Training Centre that nurtures their inherent desire to lead a spiritual life and serve humanity. But our TC is operating in a different manner.

At our Varanasi WT Training Centre, our trainees are malnourished. They get 1/2 the calories needed to maintain a healthy human body. They growing bodies and minds are deprived of the food needed to grow. Just they are left to suffer and waste away. Yet, side by side, these same trainees see how the Trainer Dada is eating like a king.

By Baba's grace our trainees have great dedication for our AM ideals and love for Parama Purusa. For this reason they do not run away.

Indeed they are cognizant that Baba's teachings of neo-humanism and Prout hold immense beauty and hope for the society. Our trainees are attracted by the ideals of a single human family. That is why they debate these points among themselves. One trainee was telling that Baba's teachings are for others, but not for those in AM. Then other trainees retorted that if we ourselves are not practicing these ideals then how can we teach them to others. This type of back and forth discussion is common at TC. When the trainer Dada hears this he feels irritated and does not wish for the trainees to discuss such matters and / or the irregularities at TC.

Verily, the Trainer Dada does not like that his trainees should reflect openly on such topics. Many say that the Trainer Dada is himself defensive about the the double standard set between the trainees and himself. So the Trainer Dada does not want them talking about our AM way of life lest they question about all the injustices and inadequacies going on in TC. He wants that they should keep mum on all these topics.

For their part, the trainees are not complaining, merely they are immensely interested in and curious about Baba's divine teachings. But the trainer Dada is not apt to let them grow or discuss in this way.

That is why for the last several months, the trainer Dada has imposed a curfew: No talking on any point at all. If any trainee wishes to express any idea then it must be conveyed in writing only. One may not talk on any topic. When taking a collective meal, if a trainee wishes to have some salt on their food then they have to write that down on a piece of paper and hand that to the trainee who is near the salt. That is the extreme imposition going on at TC these days. The trainees are not allowed to talk amongst themselves - period. They must bear their mistreatment in silence.

Such harsh rules do not exist in any civilised country or modern society. There is no way to justify the imposed silence order by the trainer Dada at Varanasi TC.

Here it should be clarified that the ruthless and repressive policy of TC cannot be classified as maonbrata (vow of silence). We must know that maonbrata is an internal discipline not to talk - it comes from within and is not imposed by others. Plus maonbrata is for limited time - it is not meant as a permanent way of living. Hence what is going on at TC is a complete injustice. It is just the case of a repressive regime wherein the trainees are forced into silence in order to keep their mouths shut about their miserable living conditions.

Only in Nazi concentration camps or in Communist work prisons would such harsh rules be imposed. So it is quite ironic that this is happening in our own WT training centre - a place that is supposed to be the embodiment of neo-humanism, yet instead emulates the ways of dark, totalitarian regimes.

WHERE MONEY GOES - WHAT HAPPENS TO MARGII CONTRIBUTIONS

When it was asked why trainees are not given proper food, the Trainer Dada replied that he was not getting sufficient financial contributions from margiis. He added that if donations were good, then certainly the trainees would be properly feed.

However, later on I found that this is not true as most of the money that comes in goes to the upper / WT kitchen. That means Dadaji and some visiting avadhutas are eating up all the donations on rich, tasty food for themselves. Hence just the bare minimum is left for feeding the full team of trainees.

Even when a margii visits and wishes to arrange a nice meal or donate food for everyone in TC, that plan is rejected by CTS (i.e. Trainer Dada) and in turn he controls that money and spends very little on food for the trainees. This also I came to know.

Plus, in order to save his post, the Trainer Dada diverts money towards Rudrananda.

STYLE OF AM EDUCATION AT TC

Let's again stand back and ask ourselves why such trainees felt inspired to attend TC. It is very easy to understand that all these youths reached from around India to get training and learn about AM philosophy: Both its theoretical and practical aspects.

But what is the reality that is going on?

One particular aspect they have learned first-hand is: How exploitation occurs when those at the top do not view others as their family members. This they have learned first-hand while in TC.

With regards to their theoretical learning, there is virtually no teaching going on at all.

The trainer Dada is busy all day with his local school kids. From early in the morning to evening time he is busy at his school in order to make money. He does not like to hire teachers as that would be an added expense.

But the truth is that our Trainer Dada should supervise the school on the greater level and let hired teachers run the daily operations of school. In addition, the trainees should be taught how to supervise a school. That is why Baba has given such a system.

Unfortunately the trainer Dada just drowns himself in the mundane dealings of the school and totally overlooks his duties at WT Trainer. All because he is more concerned with making money at the school. So when he returns back to the TC in the late evening, he is tired and he reads the newspaper and plays computer games. That is how the days pass. There is no time to teach anything to the trainees. Yet they yearn to learn about Ananda Marga.

We should remember that the WT Trainer Dada is a trainer first and a school principal second - not vice-versa. His title is WT trainer. Yet this role he mostly overlooks.

So after three years in TC, it is sadly apparent what our new brahmacariis have learned about AM. Just ask such new wts a question and see what they say.

For instance, ask them to explain about brahmacakra, kosa, loka, three causes of sin - all these basic points. They will not know the answers. Believe it or not, some passed and do not even know how to dance kaoshikii and tandava, yama and niyama, 16 Pts etc.

Please do not think that I am blaming our trainees; they are A-grade. All blame goes to those in-charges who do not feed or teach them. They neither teach the trainees by their conduct nor in the classroom. No education is imparted whatsoever.

Instead those in-charges impose all kinds of dogmas and complexes. Such bosses eat while their trainees starve.

This cycle of exploitation goes on and on.

Tomorrow these trainees will become brahmacariis and then avadhutas. Unfortunately, many of them will pursue these exploitative methods with their juniors. This is vicious cycle that is being perpetuated.

It is no different from the mother-in-law who beats her daughter-in-law. One day that daughter-in-law grows up to be a mother-in-law and she does the same repressive tactics to her daughter-in-law.

The situation is so extreme that one trainee became mad and was kicked out from TC and his laokika parents were searching for him. For all we know he may be begging in Varanasi or has been placed in some lunatic asylum.

THE REALITY STARING US IN THE FACE

Here is one hard fact we all must face. These days the number of aged Wts is much more than the number of incoming Wts. Should this trend continue then we will have a severe crisis and shortage of wts in AM. At present more than 50% of our workers are 50+ yrs of age. No one likes to think like this, but these wts are not going to live forever.

We should all take it upon ourselves to consider this situation: Ineveitable shortage of workers. Any organisation suffering from this type of trend will become extinct in a short time. This was the recent trend of Christianity in Europe and now today there are thousands of churches that are essentially vacant. The church has basically given up in various European countries.

Here the point is that our WT training centre has a big role to maintain and protect those who come to train. But that is not happening. Our level of retention is very low. If 100 reach Training Centre then from the time of their arrival to the time they have graduated and worked in the field for one year, then only 5 remain as workers. That means over the course of training and within the first 12 months of field work, we are losing 95% of those who enter TC. That is a very dramatic figure. No organisation can survive with such a low rate of retention.

Whereas if our trainees and new workers are instilled with a deep sense of family feeling and supported by their seniors, then one can weather all kinds of problems etc. Then our retention rate will be much, much higher.

Unfortunately when a family feeling is not cultivated and trainees are not encouraged in sadhana or given the opportunity to garner a deep spiritual base, then so many young trainees and wts are lost - they just leave entirely. Without the requisite spiritual base and guidance, their chance of gaining success as a Wt is very low. So we cannot blame them as individuals. Only we must reassess what is going on in out Training Centre(s).

Of course I have great regard for our trainer Dada; he is a learned person. Dadaji has extraordinary qualities but he mostly uses them for Oriya trainees, not others. If that same ethic was applied to all, then things would be much different. Dadaji must sacrifice and pour his heart for all trainees, not just for those who hail from Oriya. Then so many good things will result.

THIS IS WHAT IS REALLY HAPPENING

All this is not a fairy tale. This is the unfortunate scene happening in Varanasi TC. If you have real interest to know more, talk to any trainee who just came from TC or do your homework of investigative reporting.

Pushing aside others plight by claiming their ordeals as mere hearsay is heartless and not the way of any true sadhaka. We have to have sympathy for those suffering and we must have the courage to step forward and put a stop to their misery. Things must be set right.

                       BABA'S BLESSING

By Baba's grace He has given the perfect remedy for addressing the problems going on in the Varanasi Training Centre.

Baba says, "The incapability to recognize the requirements of others because of insensitiveness is a psychic disease. Those afflicted with this disease are also members of the vast human family; they are also our brothers and sisters. So, either by making humanitarian appeals or by creating circumstantial pressure, arrangements will have to be made to cure them of their ailment." (Problems of the Day, #4)

Namaskar,
Nagendra

"A'ma're dekhe calecho prabhu more pu'n'ya phale..." (PS 4477)

Purport:

Baba, because of the virtue of having Your grace, I can feel that You are so close and that You are looking at me all the time. Baba, You are with me each and every moment, in the brilliant effulgence and in the cimmerian darkness-- constantly, all the 24hrs. In my good days and bad days always You are and will remain along with me. Baba, You are so gracious.
Baba, when I am surrounded by the fog of hopelessness and despair, & when my life becomes burdened, then it is very difficult for me to move ahead-- all my inspiration is lost. And when I cry in pain and the tears are rolling down my cheeks like a river, and when I am drowned in pessimism, then I think that this life is useless and that this whole world is poisonous. In that case I feel it is better just to die. When I am in such a crisis, then with a very pleasant and sonorous voice, Someone appears in my mental abode and in a very sweet & intimate way He whispers, 'Do not worry, I love you'.
Baba, the effulgence of Your divine love never gets extinguished; Your love is eternal and never fades or ends. In this mundane world, everything comes and goes. Baba only You are eternal and infinite. You are the sweetest Entity. You are that force that never stops. You are that magnificent bliss that never diminishes-- always that bliss is growing and growing. Baba, You are my everything: The be-all and end-all of the life. By Your grace I am under Your shelter. Baba, in the deep core of my heart the only request I have is that: Please do not forget that I am sheltering myself in You, at Your lotus feet.
Baba, by Your infinite grace-compassion You are remaining by my side always...

              Sarva'unga'sana and Vipariitakarani Mudra

"Question: What is the difference between sarva'unga'sana and vipariitakarani mudra?"

"Answer: In sarva'unga'sana we have to fix the mind at the point of the toes, whereas in vipariitakarani mudra we have to fix the citta or mind stuff at the tip of the nose or at the navel point." (YP, p.117-18)

Note: Sarva'unga'sana and vipariitakarani are very similar-- they are almost the same thing. Just a few little differences are there:

(1) In sarva'unga'sana the mind and eyes are fixed on the center point between the two big toes while in vipariitakarani mudra the mind focuses on the navel or the tip of the nose.

(2) When the body is very straight and it does not have to exert a continuous effort to maintain that position-- rather it is easy and comfortable to hold that posture-- then it is sarva'unga'sana. Whereas mudras, such as vipariitakarani mudra, demand a constant and ongoing effort to maintain the posture. Asanas, on the other hand require a little effort to enter into the position and thereafter it is comfortable and easy to maintain.

(3) In sarva'unga'sana and vipariitakarani mudra, although the postures look the same but the effort exerted and way of approach are a little different as explained earlier. And in addition they effect the body in different ways. Sarva'unga'sana affects the glands & cakras, and the secretion of the hormone; while mudras give strength to the muscles and nevers. These ideas have been given by Baba in His various discourses.

(4) In WT reporting sessions, Baba used to sometimes give atonement by demanding that some or all do vipariitakaranai for a long time. Sometimes for 1/2 hr, 1 hour, 2 hrs, at a stretch. Naturally that qas quite enjoyable for everyone to do. And the underlying reason behind this was that the majority of WT had acidity problems and this Vipariitakarani mudra was the cure. So in the name of doing atonement it was actually Baba's blessing.

== EXPLOITED TRAINEES AT VARANASI TC ==

Note: This is a critical update about those young, idealistic youths in
WT Training Centre (Varanasi) and the conditions in which they live. Anyone
interested in the growth and development of our Marga must keep a close
eye on this situation.

Namaskar,
As we all know our WT Training Centres are a beacon of light for humanity. It is here where we train and equip spirited youths with the ability to lead, teach, and guide the people.

Our Wt cadre has a tremendous role to play in propagating the ideals of Ananda Marga and the gospel of neo-humanism all around the universe. They are assets in the development of society. Naturally then we want our training centres to be operating at an optimal standard: physically, psychically and spiritually.

Keeping this in mind, here is a critical report about the life of our trainees at our WT Training Centre in Varanasi. This is something that every Ananda Margiis should know. At present there are six trainees in Varanasi. And this two-part series of letters gives an up-close look at their living conditions.

First, in order to understand this matter fully, please read this following Baba story

                           STORY OF DHARMA SAMIIKSA:

TEACHER NOT SHARING FOOD WITH SCHOOL KIDS

One very senior avadhuta Dada told the following Baba story about dharma samiiksa. It is highly relevant to the the points presented in this entire letter.

About dharma samiiksa in 1981, I remember one [story] that touched me in particular. A young man about twenty-one years old came for his review. He looked quiet, smart and educated. After asking his name Baba wanted to know what work he did for the mission. Modestly, the young man said that he was working in an Ananda Marga primary school and children's home. His duty was to look after the four boys of the home.

After listening to what he had to say, Baba stared for a time straight at him. The analysis was thorough.

(Note: Baba witnesses all that goes on in this universe and beyond, that is why He is aware of each and every and every thought, word and deed. He is fully aware of all that transpires because this entire cosmos is within His mind.)

Baba said this little boy is a good chap; but after all, I (Baba) am sitting in my vyasasana. I have to keep watch over each disciple's life and weigh impartially both the good and the bad. Then I will decide what steps have to be taken."

Baba looked back to the young man, "So, my little boy, you are in charge of the children's home, isn't it? You teach some classes in the school. And if visitors arrive, you see they are well taken care of, I presume."

"Yes, that's so, Baba," the young man replied confidently.

"Well, do you remember about a fortnight back when some visitors came to the children's home in the morning?"

"Yes, Baba," came the prompt reply.

"I know that you looked after them well -- bought sweet and savory pastries from the market for them."

The young man nodded his head happy that Baba knew of the visit. "What kind of sweets were they, my little boy? Was it rasagolla? And some vegetable cutlets and singara, I think."

"Exactly, Baba."

"You sent one of the little boys to the market to buy the food?"

"Yes, Baba."

"You joined the guests while they were eating?"

"Yes, Baba."

"I think the refreshments were very delicious and the few of you ate everything, isn't it?"

"Yes, Baba," he said softly. Now the young man was beginning to get a hint of something more in Baba's line of questioning.

Baba continued, "Well were you aware that while you were enjoying the delicacies, the little boys were watching from behind the door? They were hoping that you would save a little for them after you had finished."

The young man could not speak. Silently he stood, his head hanging down.

"When you finished, you told those children to wash your plates and cups. Do you care to know what was going on in the minds of those little children? They are innocent little boys. Unable to resist the temptation, they fell upon those plates and licked up the sweet rasagolla juice left on them. Are you aware of that?"

"No, Baba," he said remorsefully.

Then the young man could only nod. He was stunned that Baba knew everything to the smallest detail.  The youth stood silently looking down.

Baba lovingly raised further points about defects in the young man's character and actions.

"Yes, Baba." Now he [the young man] was weeping. "Yes, I could, but I did not try to feel their misery. I am sorry for that."

Annoyed, Baba said, "Don't say 'sorry', say, 'I have committed sin."

After a little pause, Baba continued, His voice calm. "It was only a few days ago that you suddenly returned to the school at about ten at night, after spending some days away. You asked the boys for something to eat, and they immediately brought you food. You ate a good dinner. Did you care to find out how the boys had arranged that meal for you? That food, in fact, was meant for one of the boys who, for some reason, could not eat earlier. It was kept for him. They gave that food to you, and the boy had to pass the night without food. He could not sleep for hunger."

"No, Baba, it did not come in my mind."

"Do you mean to say you forgot. Are you not in charge of the home? Don't you have the slightest love or affection for the boys? You failed to do your basic duty. Can you say that your conduct is highly commendable? It it? What does your conscience say?"

"It deserves condemnation, Baba." The youth now started weeping, tears rolling down his cheeks. Baba had spoken gently. He had neither rebuked him nor threatened him in any way, only exposed the Margii's past thoughtless acts one by one. Baba's affectionate tone had left a deep impression on his mind. He now felt great remorse for his misdeeds and wept without restraint."

Baba said, "Do you know, every tinniest detail of a person's life -- both external and internal -- are at my fingertips. I know completely both the dark and the light side of a person's life. That does not mean, however, that I focus only on the dark side in order just to humiliate him or her in the eyes of others. Rather, it is the good qualities that should be
appreciate wholeheartedly.

"I (Baba) point out only those faults and evils which are absolutely necessary for one to be aware of for one's own good. When one sincerely becomes aware of those faults, repents for his or her misdeeds and the desire to change himself or herself is genuine, no other punishment is necessary."

The Margi was now sincerely repentant, and Baba's mood became very tender. Otherwise He might have continued exposing the youth's faults in public. Baba was very gentle with him and only did what was necessary to awaken his conscience.

He called the youth near. Affectionately, He asked, "Well, my son, who do you think these boys are? These children of our homes are only helpless orphans. Perhaps it does not matter if they are not dressed or fed well? The youth could only shake his head with tears running down his face. Now he wept not from remorse but from the touch of love. Baba had graciously blessed him by this whole experience.

Dharma Samiiksa was over. Prostrating himself before Baba, he left the room beaming. The divine inspiration he had received would remain an ever-burning lamp to guide him on this life's journey.

LIFE AS A TRAINEE IN VARANASI WT TRAINING CENTRE

Now please read further for news about our Varanasi WT Training Centre: standard of food for trainees, imposed silence, lack of training, and so much more.

                             OLD SOILED CLOTHES FOR TRAINEES

Let's begin by taking a look at a trainee's first interaction at the Varanasi Training Centre. Upon arrival a new trainee is given clothing to wear.

Of course, as we all know, in AM, our style is not to wear fancy clothes but certainly one's clothing should be clean. That is Baba's guideline.

Baba says, "One should always use clean but not aristocratic dress." (37 Workers Rules, pt #7)

When they arrive all their possessions are taken away; the in-charges commandeer all their personal belongings and money etc.

Tragically, our new trainees - who have come to dedicate their life to Ananda Marga are put in a depraved condition. First the Trainer Dada first takes away their money and those trainees are given dirty, used & soiled clothing.

As we know, used & soiled clothing is an invitation for skin diseases, rashes, and contagious viruses. Hence those trainees are put in a helpless position, as they are being forced to wear clothing that is unhygienic.

Let me reiterate that our trainees are wearing old, torn laungotas and undergarments that were worn by prior trainees and / or items that were tossed away by wts. It is both shocking and disgraceful. Let us also keep in mind that Varanasi is of a warm climate. Only simple clothing is needed so it would not be a big investment to give them fresh clothes.

In addition the WT Trainer Dada gets both cash donations and clothing donations (bundles of fresh clothes) for our trainees so they can have proper garments. But the cash donations Dada receives he spends elsewhere and he sells the bundles of new clothes on the black market. In the end, the trainees are forced to wear nothing more than dirty rags. This puts their health at risk as they are prone to infection and disease.

This only makes me think that if we were to treat our trainees humanely, then we might have more than six persons in training. For a world-wide organisation, a mere six trainees is not all that impressive. Certainly people talk about the conditions and that keeps some prospective trainees away.

                                  TRAINER DADA'S JUSTIFICATION

The in-charges justify that WT Training Centre is the place of tapasya (sacrifice). That is their logic for not giving proper clothing. But that is not what tapasya means. Just they give this justification in order to save money.

Trainees get the indirect teaching that anyone can wear anyone's old used clothes. That is why at DMS some steal gowns, turbans, laungotas and lungis from others. This is quite rampant.

Many feel however that this is not a civilised way to behave. Proper hygiene and clean clothes are needed for our trainees. It is not our way in AM to give old, raggedy clothes to our trainees. That is just inviting a recurring problem: disease, sickness, and the misappropriation of money etc. When money is donated by margiis for this very purpose then that money gets diverted by the Trainer Dada to the upper kitchen - to his personal kitchen. Thus not one rupee of that donated money gets spent on clean garments for our trainees. Rather those trainees are forced to wear unhygienic clothing. So this manner of giving soiled clothes to new trainees at the WT Training Centre in Varanasi must be stopped.

Unfortunately, this is only a small part of the many injustices now going on in TC. Please read further for news about food, imposed silence, lack of training and so much more.

But we must not forget that fresh, new clothing must be given to our WT trainees in Varanasi. The clothing can be simple, but it must be clean and new. So this is one serious issue that is going on. Again this is not a recent phenomenon. Such conditions have been going on at the Varanasi TC for months & months, even years. It has become the so-called culture or "ethic" of WT TC in Varanasi.

INADEQUATE & MAL-NUTRITIOUS DIET FOR TRAINEES

Another critical matter for review is the food situation at the Varanasi WT Training Centre. Here is what is happening in the trainees' kitchen. This too is a long-time, on-going problem,

Our trainees just get rice or gruel. (Note: gruel is just one cheap mixture of food thrown into one pot that is often given to have-nots.) If they are fortunate our trainees might get potatoes. They have to eat their gruel with hot chillies, or sometimes a small quantity of vegetables is given to trainees. Rarely are pulses and milk given. Yet in a vegetarian diet, pulses and milk are the main sources of protein. Both are missing in TC yet are critically needed in that young age. Gruel and chilis are what our young trainees are eating on a daily basis.

They are allotted around 900 calories per day: That means just getting a half-belly of food or less. The quantity is fixed. That is why those trainees fight for dry chapatis or plane rice when available.

And they have no right to complain - so says Trainer Dada. They must bear the conditions silently.

                                         THE "SAND" LECTURE

This famous "sand" lecture is given to all trainees to keep them in line.

The trainer Dada and other big Dadas tell the trainees how when they were in training then the system was to put sand in the food of trainees. That is one tall tale they tell.

Then they also lecture how when they were trainees then they would eat once a week. Plus other tall tales are told.

Then those big Dadas conclude by telling, "So you are fortunate that you are eating rice-gruel and a few potatoes. What more do you need? We are doing a lot for you. You have not come here for enjoyment. This is penance. Do not think about what we (Trainer Dadas) are eating. We passed this test long ago. That is why our kitchen is different and our food is different."

If the trainer was a real sadvipra, he would have given the lecture of family feeling and displayed that by keeping one kitchen in TC. Then the whole atmosphere would have been very cordial and respectful. But this he did not do. So he is shirking his responsibility and providing poor and defective "leadership". Trainer Dada is not living up to Baba's mandate - not even close. Rather he is going against.

Baba says, "Supervisory workers will have to take proper care of each of their supervised staff in all respects." (Six Additional WT Rules, pt #2)

Baba says, "Before sitting down for a meal, invite whatever persons are present around you and share your food with them. If they do not want to share, enquire whether they have enough food with them or not." (Caryacarya-3, "Procedure for Eating")

The trainer Dada must be the embodiment of AM ideals, but sadly in this case the trainer Dada totally overlooks Baba's above teachings.

Instead the above type of lecture is given by the Trainer Dada (CTS). And when big-bellied Dadas visit, they give the same story. That is what they tell to those half-starved trainees. They give that lecture to hungry trainees after they (Trainer Dada etc) themselves just ate a full belly of delicious foods like curd, fried tasties, delicacies, & sweets at a separate royal kitchen in TC etc. And while lecturing about the greatness of being food deprived they themselves are belching due to indigestion and overeating. Is this not shameful.

THE REALITY OF THAT SAND STORY

Here are the real facts behind the so-called sand story:

1) This incident of putting sand in the food happened on one day for one meal. By accident some dust fell into the food. It was an open kitchen in a dusty place when the pre-storm winds were blowing. And that was at a VSS camp in the 1960's - not WT training centre. And it was never repeated again. Indeed at the next meal at the VSS camp everyone ate very well.

2) When those big Dadas did their Wt training then they were in TC for 7 - 10 days. And the food was good. There is no comparison between the food they ate and what is served nowadays. Now trainees remain in Varanasi training centre for upwards of three to five years or longer. Over such a long period of time, many suffer from serious malnutrition and weight loss. They are emaciated and look anorexic. Tragically, that is what we see happening with our trainees.

Plus they do 4 times fast without water when on the previous day they did not get proper food. You can imagine the state of their health.

And one should not forget that according to AM ideology the trainer is the guardian of all trainees. It is his distinct responsibility to look after them. These trainees are mostly aged 17 to 20. When living in their laokik house their parents cared for them and now they are forced to live in such a pathetic situation at TC. That is painful.

Why do they stay? Love for Baba. They think that irrespective of the torture they receive they should persevere.

From now on, we will photograph and weigh each trainee when they enter into as well as when they graduate from TC. By that way we can document what is going on and keep watch on the situation.

EVEN NO JAIL DOES LIKE THIS

It is a fact that even no jail in a civilised country treats their criminals the way we treat our WT trainees. No one in jail suffers from malnutrition - there are laws and regulations in place to ensure all are given proper and nutritional food. Perhaps some may refuse to eat, but that is another matter.

Hence, see the shameful and sorrowful state of our WT training centre in Varanasi.

Without food and proper nutrition, how can we expect our trainees to be able to think and study. That is one of the reasons trainees could not learn anything about AM philosophy in training centre. After all, if one is always hungry how will the brain function. Baba says this body is a biological machine it is most obvious that it needs fuel, i.e. food, in order to function properly.

                                       RESOLUTION ON FOOD ISSUE

This food deprivation issue is quite serious and needs to be resolved. One basic formula is that a specific and adequate amount of food must be served to each and every trainee based on their body type and medical needs.

Unfortunately, what is is given now is half of what is commonly needed to be healthy. Yet those big Dadas justify this treatment: They give misleading lectures how taking only 900 calories food, which is less than half of the daily bodily need to keep the mind alert.

The truth is that those trainees are terribly deprived of food. What to speak of being psychically or spiritually alert, due to a lack of food they fight over dry chapatis, i.e. flat bread. Such is the pathetic way our trainees are treated. They are reduced to being scavengers, totally gnawed by hunger.

Again, here our cry is not that all trainees should be fed dainties and delicacies befitting of some aristocratic diplomat. We are not insisting that trainees be served fancy sweets and tasty cakes on a daily basis etc.

The demand is that our trainees cannot live off of half a scoop of rice-gruel. That is what our fight is about. To starve our trainees is an injustice and inhumane.

Note: The only recent change is that the trainee who laboriously prepares all the special food for Trainer Dada and his guests now receives some leftovers from that meal. Whereas in the past, the trainee would carefully prepare a feast for Trainer Dada Ragamayananda and then leave empty handed with an empty belly. This is the way it was for the trainee cook for years. But of late, that has changed and now the cook eats some of those leftovers. The Trainer Dada is not so "generous" with the other trainees however as they never see even one morsel of those savory dishes.

                                              REFLECTION

Since some time this has been going on. Has no one ever thought about this in the past? When some wts and margiis go to visit TC they see the plight of the trainees' kitchen and those half-starving trainees. They fell moved and complain. But the trainer replies that he has no money. So margiis donate money to arrange proper food for all the trainees for several months, but the trainer's greed obstructs this from happening. All money goes to the trainer's kitchen. This is the ongoing problem.

                                         TRAINER'S ROYAL KITCHEN

The WT trainer has his own special, private kitchen for himself and his guest avadhutas etc, while all the trainees are part of the general kitchen. The only exception being the trainee-cook who is given leftovers of what the Trainer Dada does not eat. Some days it is more and some days less.

In the royal kitchen one trainee serves as cook and he makes dainties and sumptuous dishes for the trainer and his guests etc. But all those starving trainees must eat in the general kitchen. They can smell and mentally taste what their Trainer Dada is eating, but they themselves must eat nothing but gruel. You can imagine the mental state of our poor trainees. Does this not remind you of the dharma samiiksa incident narrated above.

In the Avadhuta kitchen, they eat all kinds of dainties and delicacies with clarified butter etc. They enjoy spices, condiments, company products, as well as tasty rajasik items with lots of oil.

Our big-bellied Dadas eat rich, oily food. Our half-naked and hungry trainees serve them their delicacies. This is the painful story. Our trainees are starving and suffering from malnutrition yet those big Dadas have no qualms about eating like royalty in front of those trainees. These Dadas have the responsibility to care for their trainees - physically, mentally & spiritually - but they are shirking that responsibility. They are heartless.

The unfortunate scene is that the resident and guest avadhutas are eating like kings and have no sympathy for plight of our trainees. This is not the way to build up a brilliant AM society - nor is this the example we should project to the greater humanity.

Tragically the misery does not end here. The problems in TC are not limited to the physical sphere, i.e. soiled clothes and malnutrition. The problems run deeper than that. In the next letter more will be told.

Namaskar.

Note 1:       EXCERPT FROM "THE GOLDEN LOTUS OF THE BLUE SEA"

Baba's stories always carry a poignant meaning. His below story is quite meaningful to the above discussion.

The demon asked to the prince-

"You have suffered a great deal in my kingdom during these few days. I heartily wish that you should taste the delicious food of my kingdom tomorrow. I hope you realize that this country is famous for its fine foods."

"The prince said, 'Is it so?'"

"The demon answered, 'Yes, you know little about the pleasures of eating good food in this kingdom.'"

'Do you know what our daily menu is? We eat golden cakes fried in clarified butter, Pearl water mixed with coconut kernel, spiced Parble curry with salmon fish made of platinum and in the morning we brush our teeth with diamond powder.'

Baba furthermore writes very critically. And here the teaching of AM Ideology is embedded within the story.

"The prince asked, 'Is there such an arrangement for everyone here?'"

"The demon said, 'This arrangement is for us only--that is, for those who are learned, intellectual, rich, highborn and aristocratic. Those with whom you associate due to your ignorance--those poor, mean and illiterate people--where would they get such things? They neither know how to cook nor eat. They eat stale rice and scorched eggfruit and they brush their teeth with ash."

In a planned way, the demon arranged thousands of varieties of foods from far places, in the royal feast to please the prince and enhance his (the demon's) prestige. And the prince came to the demons palace on special invitation to attend the feast. Upon his arrival he saw the huge array of foods. The prince tasted some of them reluctantly.

Continuing this idea, Baba says:

"The prince began to taste a little of each item; but his stomach was full after tasting only some of these dishes. Thinking that over-eating was bad for his health and moreover, that as he was supposed to leave early the next morning, eating too much at night would not be good, he quickly finished his meal and got up from the table."

Baba gives some further, great ideological teaching in this children's story.

After finishing his food, while all around it was dark, at that time one idea came in the mind of the prince. And he thought that 'I should go and see how the cooks are getting treated.' The prince thought-

"'Let me see those cooks, servants and pages who prepared such delicious dishes and served them so elegantly', he thought. While passing by the servants' quarters, he suddenly reached the place where the kitchen staff were eating together after the day's hard labour. They were quite exhausted. Those who had cooked so wonderfully and served so carefully were eating only stale rice, scorched eggfruit and the sour sauce of some leaves, perhaps tamarind."

So in the above paragraph, Baba described fully that serious disparity or injustice, exploitation is a regular phenomenon in the life of servants. What way they got treated. When the prince came to know all these things, he was feeling deep repentance for having eaten any food at the demon king's feast.

Baba further continues,

"The prince returned to his cottage with a heavy heart. So many thoughts were running in his brain. He was thinking that he had made a great mistake to eat and drink such delicious food and drink cooked and served by those poor people. The beautiful eyes of the prince were deprived of sleep that night."

So Baba further continues the story, that in disturbed state of mind by seeing the pitiful condition of the poor people, the prince's heart was feeling uneasy, restless. And the prince took a vow to free the humanity.

The story follows like this below,

"He [the prince] was thinking continuously, "If I cannot free humanity from such meanness, what is the
use of my education, my intellect? My coming to this earth as a human being bears no value."

                                       * * *

This is the end of the excerpt from "The Golden Lotus of the Blue Sea".

In this entire section of the above story, first of all Baba has given the teaching that:

(A) The demon king was enjoying alone and bragging about his high status. That time the prince wanted to know whether the common people get to eat the food which the demon is eating, or not.

(B) In the demon king's feast, reluctantly the prince tasted very little of some of the items/recipes.

(C) When the prince came to know that the common people or cooks are not getting the same type of food, then the prince felt extremely repentant for tasting some of the dishes of the "royal feast".

(D) Feeling quite sad with a heavy heart, the prince took a vow to free the humanity from the exploitation of blood-sucking demons who do not provide the very food to the common public. Rather such demons enjoy tasty dishes off of the back & sweat of the labour of have-nots and others whom they (the demons) exploit.

                                     PRABHAT SAMGIITA

"Jyoti-ujjval pra'n'occhal tumi priyo..." (P.S. 2229)

Purport:

Baba, O' Parama Purusa, You are the Divine Controller of this vast
universe. You are the brilliant effulgence-- full of vitality & saturated
& with the love. Baba, You are my dearmost. By Your own glory You are glorified.
O' Parama Purusa You are ever-adorable.
Baba, I do not have the strength to catch hold of You. With my little
strength and with whatever means I have, I try to catch You-- but it is
impossible for me. Instead I remain engrossed in my own self-- unit "I".
This 'unit I' is preventing me from coming close to You. Baba, please
transform my 'I-feeling', make it Yours.
Baba, with my own strength I will not be able to get You. With the
thread of the spider's net I will not be able to bind You and hold You.
Because of this, please by Your causeless grace, allow Yourself to get
held. This is my only request to You. Please keep this open for Your
consideration.
Baba, in my mind & in my heart, I have deep longing for You-- to have
You close. Please grant me this by Your causeless grace. Baba please
come in my shravan, manan, niddidhyasan, & dhyana and make me Yours...

Baba

                  == GARDABHA SA'DHANA' ==

Namaskar,
Simplicity, sincerity, and honesty are some of the main pillars in the
life of any sa'dhaka.

Baba says, "The most valuable treasures on the path of human progress
are honesty, simplicity and spiritedness. In no stratum of life should
you allow the standard of honesty to deteriorate..." (AV #54)

Even then, it happens that people veer away from these truths, on
occasion or even more frequently. And that leads to the devaluation of
that activity or practice, as well as the degradation of the doer, of
the person.

That's a wee-bit of the philosophical side, now let's delve into
everyday practical examples.

                       GARDABHA'NNA

Suppose you are invited to a grand feast at someone's house. To
celebrate, that host has the finest chefs prepare the tastiest
delicacies and dainties for everyone to eat. Not because because he
wishes to serve the community with love and affection, but rather
because he wants to make an ornate show of the affair and bring prestige
unto himself. Proof being that if you cannot attend his feast, then he
is not the least bit sorry or remorseful, because he will just get
another person to replace you-- someone else who will pay him honor and
respect.

Under such conditions, when there is not the least bit of service
mentality and the host is just giving a feast with huge pomp and show in
order to heighten his own prestige and self-satisfaction, then attending
the program and eating that food is totally inappropriate. Because in
that case that food is nothing but donkey's food, or gardabha'nna.

Baba says, "If food is not given with that heart-felt feeling and if
one's own life is not in danger due to starvation, in that condition
then any food offered is donkey food, Gardabha'nna. So one must not eat
that food." (Summary of SC-20, p.163-64 [Bangla])

Thus under no circumstances-- unless we are going to starve to death--
should we eat food that is presented as a show of one's wealth and
greatness, because that food is nothing but donkey food, or gardabha'nna.

And we all know that in His practical life, on many occasions Baba
refused such food on various occasions whenever wealthy people or
dignitaries invited Him to dine at their house just to impress Him.

           GARDABHA KIIRTAN AND GARDABHA BHAJAN

This type of 'donkey' syndrome-- doing for show only and not out of
one's heart-felt feeling-- is not limited to the realm of food only.

We have all seen various kiirtan players or bhajan singers who perform
solely to display their own musical or lyrical talents, and not to serve
and please Parama Purusa. This happens across all religions and faiths
and occurs in our Ananda Marga as well.

Kiirtan is all about singing to please Parama Purusa-- for His glory,
not one's own glory. And the essence of bhajans is to share one's inner,
heart feeling with the Lord, and not to procure attention for oneself.

Yet at retreats or dharmacakra, sometimes it can happen that a person
might lead a kiirtan or bhajan in order to win over the admiration of
others. If this is done consistently, again and again, such performers
run the risk of being converted into microvita at the time of death.

That said, it is not just the musicians who are prone to such downfalls.
Sometimes a kiirtan or bhajan participant may dance with such
extroverted tendencies or sing with such ego that it is quite evident to
all around that that person is doing just in hopes of drawing attention
to themselves-- so that others will think they are a great devotee.

All such displays devalue one's approach fail to bring one close to
Parama Purusa. That is why Baba calls these misguided attempts as:
Gardabha kiirtan and gardabha bhajan, i.e. donkey kiirtan and donkey
bhajan.

                       GARDABHA SA'DHANA'

Then of course this can happen in the stratum of sadhana as well. Before
giving an example, it has to be said that by Baba's grace, the sincerity
and earnestness in spiritual practice is quite high in our Marga, so
this letter by no means aims to cast doubt that abc or xyz persons are
doing donkey practices. Most are fine and okay-- this is just a general
letter for everyone's awareness and knowledge. After all, each and every
person knows there own situation best.

Now let's say someone rarely does sa'dhana' in their own home etc, but
then when they go to the jagrti or to a retreat, then suddenly they
start sitting for long, long sadhana, as if that is their regular way
each and every morning and evening. And not only that, but when they
close their sadhana then the first thing they do is open their eyes and
slyly scan the room to see if others are taking notice of how long they
sat. And if still they do not feel that they got the attention they
deserved, then during meal time they will casually say that, 'It was
very good to be able to sit for 3hr sadhana today etc', and then quickly
scan the eyes and faces of others to see if they were impressed or not.

From, all these instances, we can easily understand that that person is
doing sadhana not to please Parama Purusa-- not to serve Him-- but
rather to bring name, fame, and prestige unto themselves. They want
people to think that they are a great sadhaka. That is why their sadhana
is nothing but donkey sadhana.

DONKEY PRACTICES ARE BETTER THAN NOTHING

Okay, let's say someone you know does do donkey kiirtan, or donkey
bhajan, or donkey sadhana on occasion. Even then it is not the worst
thing in the world. It is not as bad as doing no practices at all.

No doubt donkey kiirtan, donkey bhajan, and donkey sadhana can cause
false vanity and an overblown ego etc, but by Baba's grace our AM
mantras are so strong that in a moment of quietness while repeating the
mantra, even if one was initially motivated by selfish desires, one may
develop sincere love for Parama Purusa. And that is the greatest
achievement.

After all, we have all come from somewhere. In the past ages, we may
have been nature worshipers or even idol worshipers, and then gradually
that feeling gets more refined until by Baba's grace we are given the
opportunity to come onto the tantric path, and develop sincere love for
Parama Purusa.

So all is not lost for those involved in donkey practices. Certainly
such approaches should never be encouraged. But one day, those involved
in such things will develop sincere love for God. So there is light at
the end of the tunnel for those currently stuck in donkey sadhana.

                       BABA'S BLESSING

Baba says, "Remember, everyone is entitled to sa'dhana'. For this,
nothing neither pedigree, education, knowledge nor any asset, is
necessary except only two things – implicit faith and sincerity. Arouse
these two things through your will-power and victory is yours, it must
come." (AMIWL-5)

Namaskar,
Indrajit

Note 1:                DONKEY FOOD

Here is more about what Baba has to say about donkey food.

(a) Donkey food (Gardabha'nna) is that food purchased with ill-begotten
money or sinfully earned money.

(b) If someone feeds you with deep love, respect, and affection and that
feeling is conveyed through their expression, talk and conduct, and by
feeding you they feel blissful ("Toma'ke kha'iae a'nandit hobe") and
very content, and if you do not eat then they will feel pain, in this
situation whatever food you eat in their house-- even if it is just
boiled grass-- will be treated as priityanna (proper & sentient food).
Any meal or food not prepared under such ideal conditions is donkey food.

(c) So if food is not given with that heart-felt feeling and if one's
own life is not in danger due to starvation, in that condition then any
food offered is donkey food, Gardabha'nna. So one must not eat that food.

Note: In western society that food which is not fit for human
consumption is typically labeled as 'dog food'. And a similar idea Baba
has conveyed above by the term donkey food-- "Gardabha'nna".

"Malay va'ta'se madhu nishva'se ke go ele mor phulavane..." P.S. 1801

Purport:

O the Divine Entity who are You who has come in my flower garden in
this spring season with a sweet and charming smile. When I saw You for
the first time I was surprised, and it was difficult to think that such
an attractive Entity would be here. I wanted to look towards You more
intimately but I could not, that time I was sitting in the flower garden
unmindfully.
I couldn't even hear the footsteps of Your arrival, & You did not give
any hint or clue before coming to this garden. So I could not receive
You properly nor could I offer You a garland. You have graced me by
coming here but You have not cared about receiving an invitation. Please
tell me, O' Divine Entity, who are You?
Understanding Your liila is impossible. Within a flash You become tough
and then in the next moment You are as tender as a flower-- like a
garland of love --so sweet and charming. O divine Entity You cannot be
understood. You are Infinite--no beginning, & no end. Through the
practice of sadhana and dhyana I am surrendering myself at Your alter .
Baba You have graced me by coming to my mental flower garden...

                   To Do Great Work

Baba says, "The meaning of the 'Sam'gacchadhvam' Mantra should be
realised in life. Always remain united. Solve all problems, big or
small, with unity. Consider misfortune of one as the misfortune of all--
an injury to one as an injury to all." (CC-2, 'Society' chapter, point #34)

Note: So long as Baba's above teaching is not put into practice, one
cannot do great work. Devoid of this one's life will be as meaningful as
the life of a termite or ant etc. In our practical life we should be
strict in following Baba's teaching.

Baba

"Tumi ga'n go ka'ha'r tare badhir kare rekhe dhara're..." (P.S. 1972)

Purport:

Baba, in this cosmic play of Yours, You go on singing Your divine songs
to attract devotees. Even then I do not know for whom You are singing.
Baba, Your divine songs are pervading throughout this entire vastg cosmos;
Your songs are permeating each and every loka. Baba, nothing else is audible
except Your divine song. O' Baba, by Your melodious call You have made
everyone deaf. Baba, You come and go; and You smile and lovingly look upon
one and all with Your infinite compassion. But unfortunately nobody can see
You.
Baba, because of Your songs, the whole world is melodic. With Your tune,
rhythm & melody, You saturate this entire universe with divine nectar.
Everyone is immersed in Your music. Baba, when You come close then You
shower Your grace abundantly. In spite of that it is impossible for me to
become one with You-- because of my own faults & shortcomings.
Baba, You are completely captivating: Your coming and going in dhyana,
Your sweet smile, and Your charming look-- all this deeply touches my
heart. Baba, You are most attractive. O' Parama Purusa You are the
universal mind (Vishvama'nas); You destroy and wipe away all cimmerian
darkness and staticity; and You shower Your divine effulgence. Baba, You
lovingly hold each and every atom and molecule in Your heart. Baba,
everything resides within You.
Baba, with Your divine song You have captivated this entire universe. It
is Your causeless grace...

Note: Parama Purusa attracts devotees in various ways-- such as through the
song of His divine flute. And that is what has been expressed in the above
song.

== FOOD IN THE CAPITALIST ERA ==

Namaskar,
By Baba's divine grace, in Ananda Marga we aim to develop ourselves in all
the three realms: physical, psychic, & spiritual. In our AM everyone is
aware of this common fact and everyone takes proper care to follow it to
the best of their ability.

On and off again the point comes about the negative qualities of company
food products: I.e. Processed foods that come in a box and or "natural foods"
injected with steroids and chemicals etc.

This is an ongoing matter as more and more of the world's population becomes
engrossed in the capitalistic lifestyle of running hither and thither all day
and then eating something pre-packaged from a  box when hunger calls. Many,
even females in India, are losing the basic skill of how to cook and prepare
one's own food.

For this reason, all the areas of our diet & food which we generally
consider as sentient needs careful evaluation. Due to the negative practices of
capitalist companies who are only interested in selfish profits, one must be very
cautious about consuming genetically impaired foods which are commonly
sold in the market..

As a general guideline Margis know that the more processed a food is, the
greater the influence of the company on altering the food. However even
direct farm-grown products such as fruits and vegetables are also likely to
have been treated with poisonous and in some cases, structure-altering
substances. And all this is described below.

First though, one area of great concern is with dairy products as today's cows
are given all kinds of bovine hormones.

Dairy farmers use an array of chemicals and antibiotics on their cows.
This is for two reasons: (1) the overcrowded and poor living conditions of the cows in
the dairy cause frequent widespread disease among the herd (flock of cows);
and (2) the farmers' desire to produce huge amounts of milk to get more
money. The motive is capitalism -- to earn more money. So cows are given
bovine growth hormones to multiply their milk production.

More about all this is written in Note 2 below.

About twenty different antibiotics/poisons and over thirty other
drugs/poisons and chemicals are legal for use on dairy cows in Western
countries. And because of capitalistic influence in the society, those
chemicals got approved by their democratic governments of whichever
respective country.

This very above point Baba addresses in Prout. That, capitalist exploitation
occurs mostly in democratic countries. Democratic rule is the
best suited for capitalist exploitation. In democratic countries,
capitalists can purchase the leaders with their money. And get the laws
passed in their favor for their business. This it the way lobbying works.
Those with the most money get their interests met.

So regarding cow milk, these capitalists have passed such rules where all
around more than 50 types of chemicals are approved to add. And they are
really poisonous for human consumption.

Unfortunately, the general public is not aware about this fact. And on the
milk packaging or container it is also not mentioned. They only write as -
"government board approved". By seeing that disguising and misleading
label, nobody can understand what is inside the milk product. But if
anybody has more interest, then they will find out from different
laboratory tests. And then they will have the same picture which I
described above.

My only intention here is to write the fact and put forth the situation as
it is, so interested sadhakas can follow their pramitahara/proper diet. For
their all-round development and final success. I do not want to impose any
idea that such type of milk / company product should be taken or not.
That each person will have to decide, by their own vivek or conscience.

I appreciate that milk can and should be taken. Because Baba has given so in Yogic
Treatments and different discourses. But that type of milk which Baba is
talking about, where is it available?  Generally, such type of milk only one can get
when one is living in a far remote place, and the cows are living in
natural condition in the open sky, grazing directly from the ground, and
not eating chemicals, but rather leading a good and healthy life. With
proper care and comforts, then that type of milk is the real milk which
Baba is talking about. And if anybody drinks that it will give a different
effect. But unfortunately, because of capitalistic influence, the milk and
milk products that are mass produced get completely poisoned.

We should not forget that Baba has warned in Prout discourses that,
essential commodities -- food etc -- must not be allowed to be produced by
capitalist enterprises. Otherwise they will create a huge problem. And we
can see these days, such a problem is on our head. And so we should be
careful.

Here I conclude with Baba's divine teaching.

Baba says,

"Physical food is not simply for the physical body. It has got its effect
on the spiritual body. The cells of your physical body are created from the
cells that you receive from your physical food, and your psychic body is
also influenced by these cells. So while taking food, you should be very
careful. You should always try to take sentient food..." (AV-14)

Namaskar,
Jiivan Mukta

Note: In recent years, companies in various countries have begun the
practice of food irradiation. With the goal, to prevent food poisoning. By
exposing food to high doses of radiation, companies can prevent or delay
the growth of bacteria and mold. The doses of irradiation applied to food
exceed that in chest x-rays by 10 million to 100 million times. And in many
cases, the companies are not required to state on the package even, that
the food has been irradiated. This is the under-handedness of capitalism.
To protect the moneyed interests of large companies, they are allowed to
irradiate the public food -- including fruits and vegetables -- under the
table without informing people what they are eating. And irradiating food
changes the basic structure of the food. It is completely negative.

Note 2:                Cows Used for Their Milk
(Article on the condition of cows etc)

==> We should all read the following and consider how far this type of
treatment is consistent with neo-humanism as well as what effect such
products have on our human health.

Cows produce milk for the same reason that humans do: to nourish their young.
In order to force the animals to continue giving milk, factory farm operators
typically impregnate them using artificial insemination every year. Calves are
generally taken from their mothers within a day of being born—males are destined
for veal crates or barren lots where they will be fattened for beef, and females
are sentenced to the same fate as their mothers.

After their calves are taken from them, mother cows are hooked up, several
times a day, to milking machines. Using genetic manipulation, powerful hormones,
and intensive milking, factory farmers force cows to produce about 10 times as
much milk as they would naturally.

Animals are often dosed with bovine growth hormone (BGH), which contributes to a
painful inflammation of the udder known as "mastitis." (BGH is used widely in the
U.S. but has been banned in Europe and Canada because of concerns over human health
and animal welfare.) According to the industry's own figures, between 30 and 50
percent of dairy cows suffer from mastitis, an extremely painful condition.

A cow's natural lifespan is about 25 years, but cows used by the dairy industry
are killed after only four or five years. An industry study reports that by the
time they are killed, nearly 40 percent of dairy cows are lame because of the
intensive confinement, the filth, and the strain of being almost constantly
pregnant and giving milk. Dairy cows' bodies are turned into soup, companion a
nimal food, or low-grade hamburger meat because their bodies are too "spent" to
be used for anything else.

                   Health Guideline: Body Pain

Baba says, "Rheumatism occurs when the vayu bodily air is disturbed due to
excess of poisonous acids in the body...When a person's system becomes
acid-dominated rheumatism is the consequence. Hence the more a patient
takes alkaline types of food, the better. If three-fourths of the food is
alkaline, it will cure rheumatism completely within a very short time. All
kinds of sweet and sour fruits and roots, are good for a rheumatism
patient. Fasting with lemon juice and water on Ekadashi, Purnima and
Amavasya days must be observed." (YT, p.44)

Note: For those who are not aware, here below is what rheumatism is.

Baba says, "Swelling and contractures of the muscles or of different
joints, acute pain or deformity of the swollen parts, etc., are the
symptoms of this disease." (YT, p. 43)
