Yes, there is no basis for this quote: Baba did not merge Himself into the mission / organisation.


WORK AND STATURE OF LORD KRSNA

Here is further proof:

Baba says, "The Mahábhárata cannot stand if we remove Krśńa from it; while if we wish to remove the Mahábhárata and retain Krśńa, Krśńa will stand a bit diminished, though He will stand." (Namami Krsnasundaram, Disc: 1)

By Baba's above teaching, it is clear that the totality of Lord Krsna's life is not defined by the Mahabharata. Other than the Mahabharata, Lord Krsna made significant contributions and blessed humanity in all kinds of ways.


GRAND SCOPE OF BABA'S WORK

Similarly, to say that Baba merged Himself in the mission / organisation and that the whole of Baba is linked with Ananda Marga Pracarak Samgha (AMPS) is to completely disregard Baba's work from 1921 to 1955. Yet in those years, He showered His grace and taught sadhana to many disciples.

In 1939, Baba graciously performed the first initiation into Ananda Marga. And before that, He initiated and taught meditation to hundreds - even thousands. Yet only 29 disciples were known. Baba told margiis about those early disciples and why He did not bring them into Ananda Marga Pracarak Samgha (AMPS). And when margiis furthermore requested, then Baba told, "They [those early disciples] need not come into the organisation, they will serve humanity from outside the channels of AMPS."

Hence, side by side, Baba was guiding those early disciples as well as those who learned Ananda Marga meditation system.


BABA'S CONTRIBUTIONS NOT LIMITED TO AMPS

So outside the organisational structure of AMPS, Baba did many things. Not only that, even after the formation of Ananda Marga Pracarak Samgha in 1955, Baba still continued His job at the railway office for 11 more years or so, into the mid 1960's.

To say that now Baba's existence is only limited to Ananda Marga Pracarak Samgha and that He has merged into that is to strike down and diminish Baba's many contributions and gifts. 

Besides founding and presiding over AMPS, Baba did many things - He graciously blessed the world in various ways that were not within the periphery of the organisation. Here I am not belittling the value and utility of the organization (AMPS), but addressing the "veracity" of this merge in mission quote - it is patently false.

For those not aware, here are the two versions of the bogus quote...

(1) Here is the version of the bogus quote propagated by Ac. Sarvatmanandji and other Dadas starting in Oct 1990:

"I am not this physical body, this physical body is not me. If you want to know me, work for my mission, because I have merged myself with my mission."

(2) Here is the quote as it appears in the unofficial book - Supreme Expression I - which was published by an outside group / agency:

"If you want to see Me, do my Mission because I am merged with my Mission. I am not this physical body, this physical body is not me. I am in your hearts and you are in mine. Only devotion can demand my physical presence." (Supreme Expression I, p. 57 (1978)

I am fully convinced that this above "quote" has been completely fabricated by Sarvatmanandji after he borrowed it from the unofficial book - Supreme Expression I. Furthermore, I appreciate the many points raised by rational margiis that this quote is illogical and against our Ananda Marga fundamentals. And that it can never be added to our Ananda Marga shastra for the very clear-cut reason that there is absolutely no evidence Baba said this. It is not part of any recorded discourse nor is it part of an approved publication. Just it is hearsay

BHAKTI MARGA

Even then here is another way of examining this fake quote - as it goes completely against our devotional cult.

To realise Parama Purusa, it is said there are three paths: jinana marga, karma marga, bhakti marga. Yet, Baba says that ultimately there is only one marga i.e. devotion - as the other two paths are helping bhakti.

This idea, that Baba has merged Himself in the mission and that one should do mission work to realise Him, is nothing but karma marga. Metaphorically the quote means: Do mission work and merge in Him. That is the so-called teaching.

But this is nothing but karma marga or karma yoga - not bhakti marga. So it is not a viable path for realising Him. So this entire quote is a bogus idea. It is completely dysfunctional.
IMPORTANT MEANING OF ONE SONG

This brings to mind one Prabhat Samgiita:

Tava kaja kore jabo yatha shakti mane rekeh sab sera parabhakti
(I will do Your work according to my capacity but I will keep in my heart that bhakti is the best path)

This further shows that this quote is a defective idea. One cannot realise Him only by doing His work. One must come unto the path of bhakti, then one can realise Him - otherwise not. But the quote states that one will realise Him by doing work, i.e. karma marga. So this is wrong.

Baba says that ultimately one must come onto the path of bhakti. So karma marga alone is not enough. In this way also the concocted quote is inherently defective.

SOME THINK IT OK IF THEY CHANGE THE WORD "MERGE"

That which cannot be substantiated should not be accepted as the final word of God. If we do, then we are opening up the floodgates to more and more dogmas which the priest class will introduce, one after another.

 Some are under the impression that if they delete the word "merge" from the bogus quote then it is more in line with Baba's teachings and hence we should accept it as Baba's original teaching and include it as part of our Ananda Marga shastra. But this is not the right approach. We only take that to be scripture which we have Baba's recorded voice or an approved transcription / translation. That alone is our Ananda Marga scripture. All kinds of hearsay, alleged statements, and even old Baba stories do not come within the purview or shastra.

 The same goes for these bogus quotes about merge-in-mission. If we were to add one or both versions of this fake quote into Ananda Marga shastra, that opens the floodgates. Then one can add any type of Baba story or tale, or remembrance and publish that in His name as well. Or if we were to change the bogus quote to our liking and add it to the Ananda Marga shastra, then anyone could do the same with some other bogus or junk quote. Just think about the problems we would be inviting.

All along Baba was very strict about the sanctity of scripture. To be part of Ananda Marga scripture, there must be clear-cut proof that Baba actually spoke those words - either by His recorded voice or a publication which He Himself approved. Note 2: CITATION FROM PANDAJI'S LETTER:

AC SARVATMANANDJI'S ROLE IN FABRICATING THIS BOGUS QUOTE

Dada Sarvatmanandji himself introduced / re-introduced this quote in October 1990 because at that time he was the organisation. He ruled over everything and he thought that by this quote everyone will be convinced fully to blindly follow and execute his order. This fake quote suited his needs well. Other Dadas who helped him in this regard included: Bhaveshanandji, Tadbhavanandji, Vratishvaranandji, Vijayanandji, Mantreshvaranandji, among others.

 Some naive people may justify that the terms "mission" and "organisation" are two different things; but, practically speaking, they are not. In Bengal, mission means organisation such as the Ramakrishna Mission. And not just Bengal, the world over people talk about the Christian Missions. In these cases, they are talking about the Ramakrishna organisaton comprised of people and projects and the Christian mission comprised of people and projects. In common parlance mission means organisation.

And indeed if you read the propagandised quote it carries the same meaning - that mission is an organisation where people gather and work:

"If you want to know me, work for my mission, because I have merged myself with my mission."

So it was in that spirit, whereby mission means organisation, that Sarvatmanandji created this fake quote. His intent was: Baba has merged in the mission (i.e. organisation) and the way to please Him is to work for the organisation and follow your higher authority. This was Sarvatmanandji's plan for keeping all power concentrated in his hands. Remember, back in late October 1990, the whole of AMPS was very different - it was a monolithic structure under the dictatorship of one person. It was not fractured; there was one person the top seat. And indeed the plan worked; nobody opposed Dada Sarvatmananda.

Here is the proof: Just a few days later Central Committee unanimously declared the Mahaprayan Divas observance as an annual pilgrimmage to Tiljala - thereby making Kolkata the focal point. The mandate was for all to come to Tiljala to observe so-called Mahaprayan; it was not allowed to observe this anywhere else - only Tiljala (Kolkata.)

Hence, just as those Hindu priests fabricated one tale that Mahaprabhu merged into the Jagannath idol in order to appease and control all his disciples, similarly Sarvatmanandji concocted that false merge in mission quote and attributed it to Baba to eyewash legions of margiis and wts. Sarvatmanandji's plan was that they should follow his every word because he (Dada Sarvatmananda) was the organisational head and Baba had merged Himself into the mission / organisation.

And we can see that Sarvatmanandji got success.

In the next few short years, he carried out so many dastardly deeds by his mere order: Mahaprayan dogma, Fake Ananda Vaniis, Expulsion as a weapon and so much more. Sarvatmanandji did so many things because he had harnessed the obedience of workers and margiis by concocting this single quote: "If you want to know me, work for my mission, because I have merged myself with my mission." For this reason, so many listened to his every word and followed his command.

What then is the difference between Dada Sarvatmananda's approach and that of those dogmatic priests of the Puri temple. Both fabricated outrageous tales in order to bring scores of followers under their control.

I think now the point is clear.

He is the source. So you lost the sense and you do not like to understand that, to pulverize your ego, the trident of Parama Purusa is active...

I have been following this discussion about the above quote, as well as the quote printed in the unofficial book, Supreme Expression I. Between sadhakas there should be a clear-cut understanding - we should avoid accepting hearsay or speculation as the word of God.
JUST ASKING FOR TROUBLE (I.E. MORE FAKE QUOTES)

KAMDHENU ANALOGY

When at face value you see that something is fake & that it is total dogma, then what is the need to research and construct an argument on that point. When you see something shaped as a pig and squealing like a pig then there is no need to arrange a group of scientist to determine whether or not it is a kamdhenu (divine cow) which has descended from heaven. That is a total waste of time - human life is very, very important - it should not be wasted.

Baba, my days are passing thinking about You. In Your ideation, in Your sadhana, in Your dhyana. In that deep contemplation, my mind goes on floating towards its origin. But I never reach to the shore-- the terminus. 

In this vast cosmic creation, my value is just like one tiny drop in the huge ocean. In spite of this, I have longing for You and I have the full conviction that I will get You. By Your grace I will always be ensconced in Your longing. 

I do not know when the culmination of my dhyana is going to happen. And when You will accept me; or when Your divine form will become effulgent in the core of my heart. This only can happen when You grace me. 

Baba, in Your longing, my days are passing-- thinking and ideating about You...

First off, I wish to recognise brother Pandji's excellent contribution to this discussion. A significant part of his letter has been reprinted below in note 1.

Here then is my reply to this bogus quote:

"I am not this physical body, this physical body is not me. If you want to know me, work for my mission, because I have merged myself with my mission."

I applaud what others have already brought to the table regarding the afore-cited quote.

This quote is nothing but the brainchild of Ac Sarvatmanandji - after he manipulated what was printed in the unofficial book, Supreme Expression I. In either case, Baba never spoke such words, rather Sarvatmananda Dada hijacked this statement to accumulate as much power as possible and bring everyone under his control.

Another thing: Some say that in the above quote mission refers to organisation and some say it refers to ideology. Regardless, the quote is fake in either case.


SUPPOSE IT MEANS ORGANISATION

Parama Purusa is infinite and the mission as an organisation has a worldly structure and shape and boundary. So how could it be that an infinite Entity has merged into a small finite structure. Furthermore, now that organisation has been divided into three or parts, those who invented this quote do not like to use it anymore as it goes against their interest. Such is the hypocrisy.

Suffice to say that if mission is used to refer to an organisation - which was Sarvatmanandji's intention - all along then the above is the reply.


SUPPOSE IT MEANS MISSION

And if mission is used for ideology then the below is the reply.

Ideology is not bigger than Ista - Ista is bigger. Ista does not merge into the ideology. You will not see this supported in any discourse.
IN EITHER CASE IT IS WRONG

So whether mission refers to organisation or ideology, it is wrong, misleading, and illogical.

The main thing is that this is a totally fake quote.

I support your view. Till now I was thinking it was Ba'ba's written statement. Now, however, I understand that it simply cannot be Baba's statment because it is illogical and contrary to the spiritual teachings of Ananda Marga.

Here I wish to raise two distinct matters.
#1: BABA'S TEACHING FROM NEO-HUMANISM

After reading your article, I remembered Baba's teaching from His book "Neo-Humanism - The Liberation of Intellect". In one section, Ba'ba' explains that devotion shouldn't be accepted as a cult but rather as the highest mission in life. Baba Himself is the highest mission in life. So it is illogical to say that He has merged Himself with mission. He Himself is the mission. So then how could He have merged into some separate entity called mission. It is impossible.

This quote - "If you want to know me, work for my mission, because I have merged myself with my mission" - is totally misleading, illogical & bogus.


#2: JUST LIKE DOGMATIC PRIESTS OF SHANKARACARYA

Next I want to recount one incident from history and parallel that with the situation in Ananda Marga.

500 years ago, the dogmatic followers of Shankaracarya (priests of the famous Puri temple) were totally against Caetanya Mahaprabhu because Caetanya was not adhering to their caste and untouchability sentiment. Plus Caetanya had many disciples who were Muslim - this also was a point of contention for those Hindu priests of the Puri temple. So they were furious with Caetanya Mahaprabhu and vowed to make amends.

Here is what they did.

Those dogmatic followers of Shankaracarya invited the great Mahaprabhu to the Puri temple, and in a dark moment they murdered him in cold blood. To hide their sinful deed, and placate and appease the disciples of Caetanya Mahaprabhu, those Hindu priests told those disciples that the great Mahaprabhu's physical body actually entered into wooden idol of Lord Jagannath. Those conniving priests claimed the body disappeared totally inside the wooden idol and did not return. And indeed the body was never found.

Hearing this, most of the disciples felt gloried, awed, and proud that their guru Caetanya Mahaprabhu had become one with Lord Jagannath. Or, in a phrase, you can say that they were totally duped by the chicanery of those sinful Hindu priests.

Here we have to remember that it is not at all uncommon for the masses of India to believe such mythical tales. This is the land where they firmly believe that Hanuman jumped 30 miles across the sea to Sri Lanka, and that Hanuman ate the sun thinking it be a piece of fruit etc. There is no shortage of outrageous stories that are embraced as truth by such followers.

So when those faithful disciples heard that their revered Caetanya merged into the idol of Jagannath, they believed it wholeheartedly and felt that really he is great. Little did they suspect Caetanya Mahaprabhu had been murdered by those dogmatic Hindu priests. Only a few disciplies harbored such sucpicions and they were in the extreme minority.

By this way the Puri temple priests achieved three things: (1) They effectively eliminated their enemy; (2) they effectively appeased and satisfied Caetanya's disciples; and (3) they effectively set the stage to further guide and lead Caetanya's disciples in the future - those disciples would respect and follow their word. Such was the tactical victory made by those sinful Puri priests.

Similarly, this so-called quote - "If you want to know me, work for my mission, because I have merged myself with my mission" - has been propagandised with a similar agenda as what those crooked priests of the famed Puri temple (Orissa) propagandised after they murdered Caetanya Mahaprabhu.
HOW THE PURI TEMPLE STORY RELATES WITH SO-CALLED MERGE IN MISSION QUOTE

In the case of Ananda Marga, Dada Sarvatmanandji himself introduced / re-introduced this quote in October 1990 because at that time he was the organisation. He ruled over everything and he thought that by this quote everyone will be convinced fully to blindly follow and execute his order. This fake quote suited his needs well. Other Dadas who helped him in this regard included: Bhaveshanandji, Tadbhavanandji, Vratishvaranandji, Vijayanandji, Mantreshvaranandji, among others.

Some naive people may justify that the terms "mission" and "organisation" are two different things; but, practically speaking, they are not. In Bengal, mission means organisation such as the Ramakrishna Mission. And not just Bengal, the world over people talk about the Christian Missions. In these cases, they are talking about the Ramakrishna organisaton comprised of people and projects and the Christian mission comprised of people and projects. In common parlance mission means organisation.

And indeed if you read the propagandised quote it carries the same meaning - that mission is an organisation where people gather and work:

"If you want to know me, work for my mission, because I have merged myself with my mission."

So it was in that spirit, whereby mission means organisation, that Sarvatmanandji created this fake quote. His intent was: Baba has merged in the mission (i.e. organisation) and the way to please Him is to work for the organisation and follow your higher authority. This was Sarvatmanandji's plan for keeping all power concentrated in his hands. Remember, back in late October 1990, the whole of AMPS was very different - it was a monolithic structure under the dictatorship of one person. It was not fractured; there was one person the top seat. And indeed the plan worked; nobody opposed Dada Sarvatmananda.

Here is the proof: Just a few days later Central Committee unanimously declared the Mahaprayan Divas observance as an annual pilgrimmage to Tiljala - thereby making Kolkata the focal point. The mandate was for all to come to Tiljala to observe so-called Mahaprayan; it was not allowed to observe this anywhere else - only Tiljala (Kolkata.)


HOW THE PURI TEMPLE STORY RELATES WITH SO-CALLED MERGE IN MISSION QUOTE (cont)

Hence, just as those Hindu priests fabricated one tale that Mahaprabhu merged into the Jagannath idol in order to appease and control all his disciples, similarly Sarvatmanandji concocted that false merge in mission quote and attributed it to Baba to eyewash legions of margiis and wts. Sarvatmanandji's plan was that they should follow his every word because he (Dada Sarvatmananda) was the organisational head and Baba had merged Himself into the mission / organisation.

And we can see that Sarvatmanandji got success.

In the next few short years, he carried out so many dastardly deeds by his mere order: Mahaprayan dogma, Fake Ananda Vaniis, Expulsion as a weapon and so much more. Sarvatmanandji did so many things because he had harnessed the obedience of workers and margiis by concocting this single quote: "If you want to know me, work for my mission, because I have merged myself with my mission." For this reason, so many listened to his every word and followed his command.

What then is the difference between Dada Sarvatmananda's approach and that of those dogmatic priests of the Puri temple. Both fabricated outrageous tales in order to bring scores of followers under their control.

I think now the point is clear.

I am so glad that you brought up this topic about this bogus merge-in-mission quote. I have wondered about this quote for years. It makes so much sense when you say that Baba would never merge Himself into His creation. We should merge into Him through dhyana, not karma yoga.

I believe that the person(s) behind fabricating this quote and making it quote public did so to get more people to do karma yoga as a primary way of being, compared to doing more introvertive means such as dhyana.

Why would someone want others to do more karma yoga than dhyana? I don't really know for certain. Perhaps, by engaging in the work more and more, the prestige of one suborganization such as SDM over another like ERAWS might be the reason. The more work done for a particular group the more they can brag and say, 'Look what we have done. See how much we have accomplished.' Or maybe these group leaders were trying to use this as a way to gain maximum control over the margiis. Or maybe there are people out in the world that don't want others to realize the Supreme Being?


MY OWN PERSONAL EXPERIENCES ABOUT THIS

I recall my own experiences from being in India for DMC and reporting with Baba. In those days, to best utilise my time and prepare my mind for His divine darshan, I would sit for 10 hours of sadhana so I might receive and see Him in a devotional way. This was my approach, by His grace. Because if the mind is fickle or extroverted then one cannot feel His true sweetness. But some did not think I should be doing 10 hours of dhyana daily because it was "unbalanced." Those who spoke like this - primarily dadas - were mainly karmiis. When in fact, doing too much karma yoga and not enough dhyana was the real cause of any imbalance for many.

Yes, there are some in the world who not only do not want to realize Baba in every sitting, but they do not want others to know Him, either! They purposely scoff and mock!

I recall one time when I meditated many hours while waiting for Baba to come to the dais and I was told later that some Didis were laughing saying,"What is he sitting like that for?! Liberation?!" When I heard that I said to myself, 'Why of course, what else would I be sitting like that for?! We must sit each time as if we want Him now, not later on. He is our priority, not just doing sadhana as if it is a chore to check off our list of things to do for the day!'

At times, I used to do sadhana outside Baba's Tiljala gates waiting for Him to go to Lake Gardens. So, my presence at that spot gave me a good vantage point. When He would leave I would get a front row seat to see Him. One time while doing long sadhana outside Baba's gates in Tiljala, one Indian LFT shouted, "Baba's coming, Baba's coming!" I leaped up to see Him and saw that it was a false alarm. The brother was hooting and hollaring with laughter that he disturbed my sadhana in such a manner. Others laughed along with him, too. I sat down and resumed sadhana. Afterwards, I thought 'Why would someone do that? Why would someone disturb another's dhyana on Baba?' I still do not have the answer except maybe they are jealous that they have not been graced by Him to sit long hours pining for Him. I don't know.

In my home country of NY Sector, when anyone sat for long sadhanas, some margiis (mostly karmiis) thought that the sadhaka was "anti-social." These karmiis would prefer to gossip, that is, talk about things other than Him. Or sometimes they were jealous and said the sadhaka was "showing off."


SUCH THINGS ARE STILL GOING ON

And while many of these events occurred years ago, I have come to know these same types of things continue to go on in the organization today:

(1) In particular, one central didi becomes angry when anyone sings during paincjanya in the jagrti / Central office (Ranchi). She bitterly complains, "What are you doing! This is my time to sleep - do not make such noise! If you must sing then do it in a whisper - this is my time to sleep!" Then didiji promptly goes back to bed.
(2) Not only that, this same didi then wakes up at 7am - if she sees that others are still doing their sadhana lessons, she cries out, "Stop your sadhana, breakfast is needed, I have to be in Central Office by 8am - quick quick." Didiji skips her sadhana and asanas entirely; she takes bath and then directly goes to take food - which others have prepared for her.
(3) The name of this Central Didi is Ananda A. She is the one who sleeps late, does not allow others to practice paincajanya, and interrupts those doing longer sadhana.
(4) DidiAnanda Niitimaya has similar habits.
(5) Then there is this point: As many know, for avadhutas, it is mandatory to do night sadhana one time per month. For tantrikas - i.e. for all Ananda Margiis - night sadhana is a very special practice. However, if any young and inspired dada or didi shows an inclination and deep interest in night sadhana, then top Wts harass and abuse that worker. They say, "This is not good - if you do more night sadhana then Baba will curse you!" So they do everything they can to discourage and mock those interested in deeper sadhana.
(6) What so speak of sadhana, even if one didi or dada is sincere in kaoshikii and tandava or half-bath, then they face abuse and ridicule from their seniors and supervisors.

Such is the "culture" that has developed in our organization. Those inclined toward spiritual practice are sidelined, abused, and alienated.
CONCLUSION

This goes hand in hand with the fabrication of the bogus quote about merge-in-mission. Top Dadas want to use this fake quote to bring all under their control. To do that, they tried to cultivate the devotional sentiment that Baba merged in the mission. But rational margins and workers can never accept such a preposterous proclamation. That bogus quote is illogical and irrational. I support those who have shown that this never appeared in any sanctioned Ananda Marga Pracaraka Samgha (AMPS) publication.

All in all, my thinking is this: If somebody does not want to attain Godhood, then so be it. But do not stop others along the way who want to become One with Him! Leave us alone!

Here we have to remember that all beings emanate from the Cosmic Entity (Ista) - so Ista is the Hub of the entire cosmological order. Thus, there is nothing greater or bigger than Ista because that Ista is Purusottoma or the Cosmic Hub. So it is impossible for that infinite, Divine Hub to wholly merge into yet another hub. This is a false and ludicrous notion to think that the Cosmic Entity is merging into something else which has been created by Him.

Here again we can think:

Parama Purusa is the Supreme Nucleus and all the jiivas are ultimately merging into Him. He is the Hub & He is infinite. So when He is that Universal Hub and the final abode of all unit beings, then how is He going to merge into something else that is smaller which He Himself created, i.e. mission. Parama Purusa is infinite so how can He merge in that which is finite (mission). This is a totally illogical notion that goes 100% against Baba's teachings on brahmacakra, or the cycle of creation. Brahma is the Ultimate Entity and does not merge into something else. Ista does not merge into adarsha; rather, Ista is the creator of adarsha."

Baba, I longed to have Your intimate companionship and company. But I could not meet You face to face in the flower garden. I could not get You all alone - all to myself. Baba, I searched You in so many rivers, mountains and forests. But never could I get success - not anywhere. After that I tried hard to find You inside my heart; I looked within. "When Mrs Indhira Gandhi lost power and the new government came into power then many, many disciples came to see Baba - thousands went to see Him. Baba would say something and margiis used to come back happy. With good intentions, they would write and publish whatever they they could remember and make that into leaflets and magazine articles. In this way, all kinds of stories and inauthentic accounts were printed. No doubt they saw Baba and certainly Baba told them something, but what they remembered and wrote down hours later is not an accurate depiction of what Baba spoke. That is the main issue and that is what happened with this passage from the Supreme Expression book."

Yes, I remember well those days when we could visit Baba in jail. Here are some of the details which I recall - and indeed it was impossible to note down or remember exactly what Baba said - and because of His fasting sometimes He did not speak at all and instead just wrote on one simple, small piece of slate.

So here is how it went...

WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO VISIT BABA THOSE DAYS IN JAIL

When margiis or workers would arrive at the jail to visit Baba, then, first of all, they were met and searched by a plain-clothes policeman. At that point, any visitors for Baba would have to leave behind any recording devices, pens, paper, and various other things. All those types of items were held by officials at the gate or the reception area of the jail. It was only after totally emptying your pockets and bags did the jail officials allow you to enter the facility to visit Baba.

Then once with Baba, the plain clothes policeman would remain just 4 feet away - very close. If you were fortunate to arrive on a day when Baba was talking, then His talk was extremely quiet - like a whisper. That was because He was extremely weak from undergoing that epic fast; and, because the policeman was close by and Baba did not want the policeman to hear what He was saying. Thus to hear Baba, you would have to go very close to Him and turn your head so your ear was lined up with His mouth. It was like He was just whispering in your ear - and it was very difficult to decipher all His words. Even if one could hear, one may have misunderstood the idea that Baba wished to convey. So there were multiple issues involved.

Then of course, on many occasions, Baba was not speaking at all. He was just too weak. In that case He would just give hand signals or use chalk and a small piece of slate. Really the slate was only big enough to write 1 or 2 words. Obviously then, His communication under such circumstances was extremely limited.

So there was just no way to receive a full discourses or even a short talk or teaching from Baba while He was in jail. The communication was extremely limited for all the aforesaid reasons.

Supposing one did arrive on a day when Baba spoke in greater length and in a more full voice - which rarely, if ever, happened - but supposing it did, then there was one more hurdle. The human mind is simply incapable of recounting each and every word of a sentence, let alone a paragraph or more. It is impossible. Remember, no pen or paper was available, so one would have had to perfectly memorize whatever Baba spoke and then keep that in mind until one could write it down. Forget about a page or a paragraph, humans could hardly remember even one sentence properly. So it was a struggle.

That is why no printed article based on jail visitations are official discourses or considered verified accounts. With their zeal and love, margiis tried hard, but those accounts are just not accurate. That is why the book - Supreme Expression I - is not at all credible nor accepted by our Publications Dept as legitimate.

I hope this helps people understand why the merge-in-mission quote is bogus and unsubstantiated.

Yes, I appreciate this rational approach - that quote is philosophically wrong.

Rather this merge-in-mission quote has been notoriously grafted. Even then, some still think it is a genuine quote and are citing the unofficial book - Supreme Expression I - as if that is proof of the quote's legitimacy. But how could a book like that be proof when it was not published by Ananda Marga Pracaraka Samgha.

For their understanding, here is more logic and reasoning why this quote is wrong. 

1. Supreme Expression I is not an approved or official publication of AMPS. Rather it was published by an outside group. And this they readily acknowledge on the title page. There they write: "For a complete list of original books, please contact Ananda Marga publications as indicated on the following page." This is the exact line from the title page of Supreme Expression I. So Supreme Expression is not an unofficial book; rather it was published by an independent publishing house in the Netherlands. In that case, how could such a publication be relied on as the sole and trusted source of a supposed quote which is wholly against the ideological ethic of Ananda Marga.

2. When Mrs. Indhira Gandhi lost power and the new government came into power then many, many disciples came to see Baba - thousands went to see Him. Baba would say something and margiis used to come back happy. With good intentions, they would write and publish whatever they they could remember and make that into leaflets and magazine articles. In this way, all kinds of stories and inauthentic accounts were printed. No doubt they saw Baba and certainly Baba told them something, but what they remembered and wrote down hours later is not an accurate depiction of what Baba spoke. That is the main issue and that is what happened with this passage from the Supreme Expression book.

Note 1: THE TWO VERSIONS OF THIS BOGUS QUOTE

(1) Here is the version of the bogus quote propagated by Ac. Sarvatmanandji and other Dadas starting in Oct 1990:

"I am not this physical body, this physical body is not me. If you want to know me, work for my mission, because I have merged myself with my mission."

(2) Here is the quote as it appears in the unofficial book - Supreme Expression I - which was published by an outside group / agency:

Baba, You have brought me on this earth again and again. You have inspired me to love You in infinite ways. My whole existence has always revolved around You; but even then I could never be satiated to my heart's full content.

Now You have brought me again on this earth. And, by Your grace, I have brought a basketful of love for You. It is in my heart. O' my Lord, please remain along with me always - day and night, always.  

Among all the things which are dear, You are the Dearest. You are my Priyatama, the innermost One of my heart. Of all the things which I love, You are the most dear. You always reside inside my heart.

Baba, what way You are, it is impossible to explain through language. I do not have any words to express Your glory. So I do sastaunga pranam to You - thousands of times, infinite times, again and again.

One of our main duties as Ananda Margiis is to maintain and present Baba's teaching in an untainted manner to the world and future generations. That means Baba's books and discourses should be clearly and purposefully noted. Side by side, we must also ensure words, phrases, and teachings are not wrongly attributed to Him. That is equally important.

At present, there is one infamous line that is wrongly attributed to Baba that some still remain confused about - here is that statement:

"I am not this physical body, this physical body is not me. If you want to know me, work for my mission, because I have merged myself with my mission."

As we know, all of Baba's statements and teachings are logical and rational. Thus, if the above line is truly Baba's guideline then it should stand up to the test of reason and rationality.


THE FIRST PART OF THE BOGUS QUOTE

Let's evaluate this so-called Baba quote step by step. Here is the first part:

"I am not this physical body, this physical body is not me."

As we know, Baba is Parama Purusa Himself and He is not limited to His physical body. So this initial statement is proper; it parallels Baba's teaching from point #1a of Caryacarya part 2:

"The one formless, beginningless and infinite Parama Brahma (Supreme Consciousness) is the only entity to be attained by living beings – That alone is Jagat Guru (the Supreme preceptor), That alone has revealed Brahmavidyá (intuitional science) to us through the medium of the name and form of Anandamúrtijii. Unit beings must be made to appreciate Its majesty." (Caryacarya - 2, Sadhana, pt #1a)

Plus, when acaryas teach dhyana to any sadhaka and guide them to ideate on the form of Guru then it is expressed that this image is not the image of Purna Brahma (Full Brahma); rather by this limited form which Guru has taken, the sadhaka reaches to Purna Brahma.

So up until this point the quote is ok ("I am not this physical body, this physical body is not me") as it is consistent with Ananda Marga teachings.


THE SECOND PART OF THE BOGUS QUOTE

It is this next part that is of such a dubious nature:

"If you want to know me, work for my mission, because I have merged myself with my mission."

This part of the quote proclaims that the Cosmic Entity Baba (Ista) has merged Himself into yet another lesser entity - i.e. mission.

Here we have to remember that all beings emanate from the Cosmic Entity (Ista) - so Ista is the Hub of the entire cosmological order. Thus, there is nothing greater or bigger than Ista because that Ista is Purusottoma or the Cosmic Hub. So it is impossible for that infinite, Divine Hub to wholly merge into yet another hub. This is a false and ludicrous notion to think that the Cosmic Entity is merging into something else which has been created by Him.

Here again we can think:

Parama Purusa is the Supreme Nucleus and all the jiivas are ultimately merging into Him. He is the Hub & He is infinite. So when He is that Universal Hub and the final abode of all unit beings, then how is He going to merge into something else that is smaller which He Himself created, i.e. mission. Parama Purusa is infinite so how can He merge in that which is finite (mission). This is a totally illogical notion that goes 100% against Baba's teachings on brahmacakra, or the cycle of creation. Brahma is the Ultimate Entity and does not merge into something else. Ista does not merge into adarsha; rather, Ista is the creator of adarsha.


FOR RATIONAL MARGIIS THE POINT IS CLEAR

All Ananda Margiis are open-minded because of sincere sadhana practices. Those attached with this so-called quote, and continue to attribute it to Baba, have a closed mind. Their sense of rationality has faded away - that is why they cannot understand, unfortunately. Or perhaps they have a dogmatic interest.

Whatever may be, for all rational Ananda Margiis, the entire matter is crystal-clear- undeniable This quote could not possibly have come from Baba as He Himself never tells anything which runs contrary to Ananda Marga ideology.

About the above bogus quote - pages and pages can be written - but really I think no need. The reasoning is perfectly clear. That Divine Entity which is the Cosmic Nucleus and the shelter of all does not merge into any lesser entity like mission. That just does not happen. The Supreme Shelter does not Himself take shelter in anything else. No way - no how.

Baba says, "He is the supreme shelter of all, yet requires no shelter. It is said,

Prabhumishamaniishamasheságuńam guńahiinamaheshaganavaranám.

“Oh Lord, Oh Parama Puruśa, You are in control of all, You are the shelter of all, but You do not require any shelter from anyone.” (Ananda Marga Ideology and Way of Life - 10, Ideation on Brahma)

Note 1: WHY THEY MADE THIS QUOTE

Those who fabricated this quote and wrongly attributed it to Baba seem to have done so under their own separate agenda. Someone should write more about this idea to alert others.
