Baba's Guideline: Celebration of Ananda Purnima

Baba

== BABA'S GUIDELINE: CELEBRATION OF ANANDA PURNIMA ==

~ Part 1 ~

Namaskar,
The auspicious and grand occasion of A’nanda Pu’rn’ima’ is coming soon.

The official day is Saturday, May 25 – though in many units celebrations start before then since A’nanda Pu’rn’ima’ is the most significant social function in our Marga.

WE ALL KNOW...

Certainly, we all know that the holy occasion of A’nanda Pu’rn’ima’ signifies the day of advent of Taraka Brahma as Mahasambhuti Baba. And that on this wonderful and blissful occasion there is a morning and evening dharmacakra, collective bath, all-round merrymaking, and a sentient feast etc.

Yet there are also other special components to the celebration of Ananda Pu’rn’ima which Baba has outlined. Some of these are listed and described below and other margiis and WT’s are kindly requested to contribute other plans and programs which they know about that are associated with the celebration Ananda Purnima .

INNER MEANING

Here first though is one of the special ideations linked to the holy festival of A’nanda Pu’rn’ima’.

A’nanda Pu’rn’ima’ signifies the advent of Mahasambhuti who has come to wipe away all the tears and fog from this dusty earth and infuse within all a sense of peace, hope, tranquility and bliss. He has graciously come to establish the lost humanity in divinity – elevating everyone’s standard, and paving the way for the reign of dharma.

WAYS TO CELEBRATE THIS DAY

Here below are a few of Baba’s many recommendations and guidelines for how to make the occasion of Ananda Purnima an even more memorable, joyful, and charming gathering for one and all.

(A) On the grand festival time of Ananda Purnima, all types of age groups should have their own programs that will be appealing to them. Certainly there will be one central place for the entire gathering, yet at the same time specialised plans and programs for the various age divisions should be organised.

For the younger children there should be games and sports and / or a drama production etc.

For adolescents & teenagers there should be competitions in the various realms from kaoshikii and tandava to music, art, and literature. And their day should also include sporting events etc.

And likewise for adults, there should be a range of activities and programs from the devotional singing of kiirtan to service projects, plus spiritual talks, dance competitions, and general socialising.

(B) In addition, on Ananda Purnima the head of household can utilise this as the time to arrange annual new clothes for all family members. Plus there should be toys for the children and the sharing of sweet treats. By this way one and all will know that something great is happening and that Ananda Purnima is a grand event.

(C) Ananda Purnima can also be made special by offering moderate gifts and presents or cards etc to those around you as a showing of love and affection.

(D) And like that many, many more points and suggestions are there in relation with the grand and blissful celebrations of Ananda Purnima.

SPIRIT OF OUR AM SOCIAL FUNCTIONS

The magnificent characteristic of all our Ananda Marga social gatherings is that they welcome one and all irrespective of age, colour, race, profession, educational standard, etc, all types from all places are welcome. Indeed everyone comes together for sadhana, games, a feast, and other celebratory activities and by this way one social flow is formed thus making way for a healthy, unified human society.

THE KEY POINT

In this way social functions and festivals are a time for us all to move together in His divine flow, regardless of one’s standard or status - where one and all gather round in the spirit of unity. And top of all our special duty as devotees is to propagate the greatness and grandeur of Sadguru Baba. In a phrase we can say that this is the key point behind the auspicious occasion of A’nanda Pu’rn’ima’: To highlight Baba’s greatness.

“The one formless, beginningless and infinite Parama Brahma (Supreme Consciousness) is the only entity to be attained by living beings— That alone is Jagat Guru (the Supreme preceptor), That alone has revealed Brahmavidya (intuitional science) to us through the medium of the name and form of Anandamurtijii. Unit beings must be made to appreciate Its majesty.” (1)

Here following are some of Baba's special guidelines for our collective social functions and festivals like Ananda Purnima.

CARYACARYA GUIDELINES ON ANANDA PURNIMA

"Ánanda Púrńimá: Collective bath with snána mantra, twice collective Iishvara Prańidhána and Varńárghyadána, collective noon and night meals, merry celebrations, spiritual conferences, annual meetings of workers, children’s sports, and procession with táńd́ava dance. (2)

BRING NEW JOY AND VIGOUR

“When people become tired and uninspired, when they can no longer look towards the future with hope, when their colourful dreams are shattered, at that time the sweetness of a festival brings new joy and vigour in life. Thus in individual and collective life, the importance of festivals is tremendous. One should always remember that festivals should be such that all can take part in them without any ostentatious display of wealth, and with an upsurge of their life force. And these festivals should be conducted in such a way that people take part in them from a spontaneous inner urge. I hope that you will make such arrangements so that all are attracted towards your festivals which will be more and more charming – and this will bring about your collective welfare.” (3)

SOCIAL FUNCTIONS:

A GREAT UNIFYING FORCE

"Collective social functions: Many of the ills of society develop because people do not care to know other members of society. This may not only mean ignorance of the condition and difficulties of others, but also leads to intolerance and a lack of interest in the affairs of the other members of society. Common social functions bring different members of society together and are therefore a great unifying force. By performing certain functions collectively, all the members are engaged in doing the same thing for some time, and this brings about a feeling of unity and interest in others."
"In Ananda Marga such common social functions are especially encouraged. Milita snána [collective bathing] and dharmacakra [collective meditation] provide grounds for common social functions in the physical, psychic and spiritual fields. Common participation in such functions is a very great unifying force. The participants in such functions will have no intolerance for each other, and will instead get more united. Such functions are, therefore, a great unifying force." (4)

SEE THAT ALL JOIN IN THE FESTIVAL OF ANANDA PURNIMA:

COLLECTIVE MEAL IS IMPORTANT

"Humans are social beings. So every human being likes utsava. It is the desire of all that they will rejoice unitedly. In Europe Puritanism failed in the end, only because the Puritans failed to care for the desires of the general public. They preached their theory only to a handful of devotees of knowledge."
"Ananda Marga is for the general public. So, considering the necessity of the general mass, proper importance has to be given to the Utsava in social life. Enthusiasm in a utsava is the greatest in the children, in the tender aged boys, in the youths and last of all in grown ups. In the programmes of a Utsava, therefore, you shall think for the children first. Their sweet stammering noises ensure the success of the Utsava. But whatever arrangements you may make for the children, the youngsters, youths, or for the grown-ups, make that there is no dearth of discipline even to the minutest extent anywhere. Let there be complete harmony..."
"A grown up man does not like that others should call him grown up. An old man does not like that others should tell him old. Do you know, why they do not like to be said so? The adults or the aged are nearing death. This means that one is drawing nearer death as one grow up and this is why one does not like to be told grown up or old."
"Taking this for granted regarding human psychology, you shall arrange for two or three items in the programme for the old to enjoy, so that they may think at least for a short time that they are not old, they have sufficient energy still left in them."
"Take pains to see that all join in the Utsava. Give full opportunity to all the artists to make a display of their talents in art. Remember that taking food together is a special feature in a Utsava, without which half of the pleasure of a Utsava is marred." (5)

BABA'S INNER WISH

“That which renews human existence and makes it full to the brim and overflowing with the joy of living is termed a festival...Inspire all people to live with a new spirit like true human beings. Let it inspire them with the fact that all humanity is an indivisible entity. On this auspicious day this is my inner wish.” (6)

in Him,
Amriteshwar Deva

Baba

“Áloke snátá, a’nande-smit, e prabhát jeno prabhu, sháshvat hoy…” (Prabhat Samgiita #2649)

Purport:

Baba, O’ Parama Purusa, this magnificent dawn of Your auspicious birthday, Ananda Purnima, is saturated with Your effulgence and smiling in bliss – please may it remain so up to eternity. Baba, Your divine effulgence is emanating in the far distant sky, as well as in the deepest corner of my heart, O’ my Dearmost.

Baba, O’ my Parama Purusa, since ages I have been waiting in the hope of Your holy advent. Today with Your endless love You have fulfilled my longing. Your infinite compassion (karun’a') has satisfied the yearning of my heart. Baba, please let this showering of Your karun’a’ continue to flow, age after age, up to eternity.

Baba, it was known to me that You reside eternally in my mind. Now You have graciously taken advent in Your divine form and grandeur of Mahasambhuti. O’ my Dearmost Baba, You reside in my heart and mind; that is the pulsation of my existence. Because You are, I am. Baba, by Your cosmic grace, I understand that this divine liila of Yours is infinite and endless.

Baba, by Your love and compassion this dawn of Your auspicious birthday is saturated with effulgence and smiling in bliss. Baba, You are so gracious; You are the most loving One…

~ Part 4 ~

Note: This series of letters, “A’nanda Pu’rn’ima’ Celebrations: Baba’s Guidelines”, has four parts. Each part, presented by a different margii, offers complementary ways and descriptions for celebrating Ananda Purnima. Together, these letters paint a picture for how to commemorate this grand festival. We wholeheartedly welcome your suggestions as well. Please read part 4 below. – AM-GLOBAL Moderators

Namaskar,

Baba’s holy advent is such a tremendous event that there is no aspect of life that is not purified and made pristine by His holy arrival. From the flowers to the clouds, from the schools to the hospitals, from the smiles to the tears of joy, and from the kiirtan to the meditation, each and every aspect of creation is revolutionized by His august presence.

In that wholesome spirit, our Ananda Purnima celebrations should be of an equal breadth, size, and stature. Every sphere of life should be touched by our Ananda Purnima ceremonies and festivities.

Here below are further suggestions compiled from various margiis for how we can best maximize the celebration of the glorious day of Ananda Purnima.

THE MAKING OF AN EXHIBITION

Around the globe, and perhaps in our larger units especially, various exhibitions can be created that encapsulate a wide sampling of Baba’s teachings and programs. In this way the theoretical side of AM ideology and
its practical expression can be highlighted. Toward this end, there could be a good news presentation of the wide array of AM service projects and socially uplifting programs; plus via story, song, dance and drama there could be a joyous performance highlight the history and development of Ananda Marga.

In addition, there could be the special showing of Baba’s video and other renewing activities like a tree planting, musical performance, and other cultural activities.

ORGANISING AN ANANDA MELA

A grand Ananda Mela can also be formed in selected places whereby local sentient shops are invited and where cultural programs, sports and festivities, art, music, a children’s theatre and poetry competitions are
displayed. Such a gathering could include non-margiis and margiis alike. That will build community relations and involve everyone. It would bring people together in a sweet way and the environment could be nicely maintained by having all the events monitored by margiis. Yet at the same time allow non-margiis to participate fully and be active up to certain levels.

Verily, this is an occasion for one and all and could include multi-day or even multi-week camps for honouring and celebrating this most auspicious event of Ananda Purnima

Overall, such types of programs would draw in all the various sections of society and could occur over a month-long period, perhaps 2-weeks before through 2-weeks after Ananda Purnima - as some do in India with the Ram Liila*. Our Ananda Purnima should take on that type of significance and celebration, focused totally on Baba.

VARIOUS TYPES OF KIIRTAN PROGRAMS AND PRASAD

In our various units, across all the sectors, there will be grand kiirtan programs. Certainly, already numerous akhanda kiirtan programs are being held; and, in addition, nagar kiirtan can also be done in our villages, towns, and cities.

As you may know, nagar kiirtan, the singing and dancing of Baba Nam Kevalam through all the streets & parks etc, should be done just before sunrise – not during the full-day sun. The style of kiirtan should be soothing, not ear-piercing. As far as possible, this should be done with loudspeakers bearing in mind the local customs and legal code. What is acceptable in India, however, may not be allowed elsewhere. The overall spirit is for a maximum number of people to hear the holy siddha mantra: Baba Nam Kevalam.

The sound should be natural with the overall spirit being to please Baba by singing and sharing this divine chant with others. Baba guides us that by this way there will be tremendous benefit.

After each and every kiirtan program, there should be special prasad. Because Ananda Purnima is for everyone. Some are involved deeply in spiritual sadhana while some, such as the children, are interested in special treats like prasad. By this way there will be something for everyone. All will think of it as a delightful and joyous celebration.

OVERVIEW OF FESTIVITIES

The above programs will serve as a great complement to the numerous other festive ways of celebrating the great occasion of Ananda Purnima that were outlined in prior letters of this series. Some of those activities include: Poetry readings, debates, prize distribution, collective bath**, collective food, narayan seva, clothing distribution, collective sadhana, medical camps, food distribution in nursing and convalescent homes, collective social service, singing and dancing of Prabhat Samgiita, the exchange of gifts, sports and games, display of Baba’s diorama, artful presentation of Baba’s liila, cartoons and paintings of how Baba has graced bhaktas, theatrical depictions of how negative forces could not diminish the glory of Baba and Ananda Marga and so many more ways.

Indeed this is a time with everyone – young and old, wealthy and poor, literate and illiterate, etc – can come together and rejoice in the sweet celebrations of Baba’s divine advent. The festival of Ananda Purnima should be given utmost importance as it is the most festive day of the year.

ALL WILL REMEMBER….

The grand result being that all will fondly remember and gather round this auspicious occasion. Already many units may be doing like this.

We should always keep in mind that everyone’s spiritual standard is not the same. Not all members of the society have very high devotion. But if everyone is celebrating together via by the various festivities etc then they will fondly remember Ananda Purnima. That will enhance unity. And it will draw people near.

BABA’S BLESSING

Baba says, “This is a day of rejoicing, and amidst this rejoicing people will have to determine ways of improving their individual and collective life, developing their resources in all the strata of life for their future progress.” (A Few Problems Solved – 5)

Namaskar,

Tanmay Deva

* Ram Liila: The Ram Liila is an annual theatre drama depicting the glory and greatness of Ram staged in the evening for several weeks. This theatre drama highlights the life of Ram for the public to see, learn and enjoy.

In a similar manner, we should produce a theatre reenactment of all the great events in Baba's life. This should include His younger years, the formation of Ananda Marga, the spread of devotion, the jail period, Emergency, how the margiis faced so many problems, how the communists were destroyed, the vast array of AM service projects, spiritual life, and more. All the good and bad times should be depicted for everyone to know.

** Collective Bath: In AM, collective bath does not mean that males and females will bathe together. It is separated by gender, unlike in western countries.

Namaskar,
Ananda Marga is the path of bliss. The systematic yogic lifestyle and the 360 degree spiritual cum social outlook leads the entire human family to march ahead in unison. Part and parcel of this collective movement is our participation in social functions because it is by these blissful gatherings like Ananda Purnima that we are able to glorify Baba, renew ourselves, and attract more people on the collective train of dharma– generating greater momentum to move ahead.

In His discourse "Social Psychology" Baba tells the following in the section on collective social functions.

Baba says, "Many of the ills of society develop because people do not care to know other members of society.

Such functions are, therefore, a great unifying force." (A Few Problems Solved - 7, Social Psychology)

Therefore social functions like the upcoming Ananda Purnima celebrations give society a tremendous turbo boost to advance: Such programs help inspire people to grow together. Plus social functions generate more enthusiasm and propulsion on the collective pathway – with the result being that all types of good things suddenly become possible.

By such functions humans can solve various problems. Now the need of the day is to build a single human society. Naturally social functions help; by this way various people come together to enjoy in social and spiritual way.

Here below are additional views on the celebration of Ananda Purnima and how social functions positively affect our Marga. By Baba’s grace others will also continue to express their insights on this topic.

By cooperative human interaction society moves ahead in a dynamic way.

SOCIAL FUNCTIONS BASED IN SPIRITUALITY

Yet not only do AM social functions give a huge injection of inspiration, but these grand gatherings – which Baba has designed – goad and guide everyone deeper into the spiritual realm. This in turn brings permanent peace. So although the name is a social function but its base is spirituality.

In direct contrast in the crude society social parties end up being nothing but degenerative events that promote and satisfy animalistic desires & carnal pleasures. Just people are rushing madly after worldly and transient things.

INCORPORATING FOOD INTO THE CELEBRATION

Here are a few more ideas that came from several margiis.

High quality meals should be made available to any and all who attend. The most practical and rational way to do this is  for margiis to contribute to this program according to their liking and means.

Basically, donations should be requested from all the margiis – on a sliding scale. According to their capacity they can contribute. So there should not be a certain fixed fee for every margii. Rather, donations should be based on one’s financial condition. Those with more money can offer larger donations and those with financial constraints can give smaller amounts.

So everyone should contribute something and if a person has the feeling and ability to give a bigger financial donation, that is welcomed. Along these lines, it is okay to let wealthier margiis give more, if they wish.

However, the amount donated should not be revealed publicly. That would be insensitive and humiliating for those donating smaller amounts. One idea is to set-up a special, hidden donation box; then people can offer even the smallest of donations and still feel comfortable. May we always remember that it is the feeling behind the giving that is most important, not the amount.

By and large though, money should not hinder anyone’s participation. Everyone should be encouraged to participate and bring their entire family, as well as their close friends. That will make for a joyous celebration and it will give us the opportunity to create new margiis.

All along, we have to find the right balance. That is why there should be a sliding scale, with no stated minimum amount. The main idea is that the food at programs like Ananda Purnima should be accessible to all. With a progressive donation arrangement that aim is entirely possible.

Actually what we have seen here in India is that often in Delhi Sector someone steps forward with great enthusiasm to cover the cost of the entire program. But this should only be accepted when the person has sincere feeling for Baba and the overall spirit of the celebration. If offered out of pomp or show, then such monies should be politely rejected.

Baba says, "If a person wants to feed you out of genuine intimacy, you should take that food happily, even if it is just grains and vegetables. But if someone invites you only to make a show to people, never accept his/her food." (Caryacarya-2, Society, Pt #37)

Finally, special food should be made available for all attendees. There will be one kitchen: The same type of food for all, which is of top quality, yet very simple and sentient.

REFLECTIONS

So these are a few of the ways and thoughts about how this Ananda Purnima can be celebrated. And these things are all per Baba’s distinct teachings.

BABA’S GUIDELINE AND BLESSING

Here following is Baba’s blessing as we enter into the weekend of Ananda Purnima.

Baba says, “Ensure that those who enjoy the celebrations also get thereby healthy opportunities for their physical growth, mental development, and spiritual progress.” (Caryacarya – 1, p.42)

Namaskar,
Harideva

Note 1: THE MEANING OF UTSAVA

Baba says, “People often feel bored with their humdrum lives, with their mechanical routines; thus a fresh start must be created through festivals or utsava. The root verb su means “to be reborn.” Su plus -al suffix = sava. The substance which produces new vigour in the body is called a’shava, or wine. Similarly ut + su + al = utsava, which means “festival.” “Ut” means “towards up” and “sava” means “life” ; so utsava means “an occasion which gives human beings fresh inspiration to live a new life.” (A Few Problems Solved – 5, p.18)

Note 2: MUST NOT USE FIRECRACKERS

Many units have stopped using firecrackers during our Ananda Marga festival celebrations. Such firecrackers are a waste of money, create huge pollution, and invite serious injuries. Furthermore firecrackers are a carcinogen. Thus firecrackers are dangerous and wasteful on many levels. They should not be used at our programs. Instead the funds used for purchasing firecrackers should be directed toward enhancing our narayan seva & relief work that very day.

(A) In the below story Baba specifically warns us about the use of firecrackers - on multiple levels:

http://am-global-01.blogspot.com/2011/10/baba-story-warning-about-firecrackers.html

(B) Here is a more technical letter along with a human interest story about the dangers of firecrackers:

PRABHAT SAMGIITA

“Tumi je esecho a’j, vyathit janer katha’ bhavite…” (Prabhata Samgiita 647)

Purport:

Baba, O Supreme One, the whole society was facing various types of tortures, humiliations and exploitation. No one was there to think about the exploited masses – those who were crying and suffering. Baba, feeling the cry of their heart, You Yourself have taken advent today. You are so gracious.

O’ Parama Purusa, in the past there was no one to love them. Now, with Your divine compassion, You have come to love all those downtrodden & exploited people – as well as one and all. With Your infinite compassion, You have removed everyone’s pains and grief. Baba, in the past, people were engulfed by various dogmas and their minds were completely stained. You have removed that cimmerian darkness from their existence. In the wake of Your holy advent You filled their lives with the effulgence of divinity.

Baba, the entire universe was looking toward the eastern horizon anxiously awaiting Your auspicious advent. The common people were facing excruciating tortures and torments; their entire existence was completely wounded. Baba, their whole body and limbs were racked by the blows of severe suffering. Due to carrying the heavy load of those burdens and bondages for such a long time, not even a tinge of happiness remained in their lives. Long back all their joy totally vanished.

O’ Parama Purusa, O’ Baba You are so gracious; You have showered so much effulgence in the bosom of this universe. By Your infinite love, You have inundated the hearts of everyone with more and more divine nectar. With Your sonorous yet thundering voice You are calling out to all that there is no reason that they should keep their heads hung in despair, rather they should keep their heads held high.

Baba, O’ Divine Entity, You have taken advent today...

Note: This series of letters, "A’nanda Pu’rn’ima’ Celebrations: Baba's Guidelines", has four parts. Each part, presented by a different margii, offers complementary ways and descriptions for celebrating Ananda Purnima. Together, these letters paint a picture for how to commemorate this grand festival. We wholeheartedly welcome your suggestions as well. - AM-GLOBAL Moderators

Namaskar,
Revered Baba has lovingly instilled within us all a vision for how to move ahead in life and He has graciously blessed us with the divine feeling of devotion, or bhakti. And indeed in each and every sphere of existence – whether physical, psychic, or spiritual– He has paved the way for humanity’s growth, generation, and enlightenment. Thus the divine and holy
advent of Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji is the most significant event this earth has ever seen. Naturally then the blessed day of Ananda Purnima is recognised as the greatest and most celebrated of all our AM social functions.

Here following are further suggestions and ways to celebrate this divine day.

As we all know, this year Ananda Purnima falls on 6 May.

CELEBRATIONS AROUND THE GLOBE– IN EACH AND EVERY UNIT

Unlike centralised events like DMS etc, the occasion of Ananda Purnima is meant to be joyfully celebrated in each and every unit. It is a local function for one and all. Thus every unit is highly encouraged to host their own Ananda Purnima celebration. And, sure enough, many ideal units do everything – more than a full day program. Thus margiis and sympathizers
often arrive the evening before for initial programs and presentations and then continue the next day of Ananda Purnima with a special paincajanya and celebrate the whole day through with a varied array of activities and programs, culminating and concluding late that evening. Here the main point being that, to one or another degree, blissful Ananda Purnima programs should take place locally in each and every unit– this is Baba’s prescribed system. And more about this idea is also appended as note 2 at the end of this letter.

SPECIAL PRABHAT SAMGIITA PROGRAMS

As everyone may remember, Baba has beautifully given the system of making extended Prabhat Samgiita programs whereby gathered margiis to sing the blissful song: Several compositions of Prabhat Samgiita. Just like we often have our long akhanda kiirtan programs of 3, 6, or 12 hours – in the same way these programs of Prabhat Samgiita can also take place.

Many may recall how Baba used to sit on the dais and call for the beginning of Prabhat Samgiita programs for the grand celebration of our Ananda Purnima social function. And it would proceed step by step where first one purport was read out by a selected margii and then the singing of that same song would begin and small young children of 8 or 9 years of age would dance to that song. And then as soon as that song was completed then another would begin with the reading of the purport followed by the singing and dance performance of that very song. And in this grand fashion several songs were linked together – all the while maintaining a nicely formatted sequence where the first song celebrated Baba’s holy advent and then the next song depicts His divine blessings etc. And by that way several songs are linked together creating one panoramic, devotional picture.

INCULCATING THE SPIRIT OF COLLECTIVE SAM’GACCHADVAM’

Plus Ananda Purnima is a wonderful opportunity to bring forth one and all in collective harmony.

Baba says, “At the outset of any festival or social ceremony, the Sam’gacchadvam’ mantra is recited, the purpose is to impose the common ideal on all. The love for the entire humanity.”  (Prout Nutshell - 4)

Thus on the festive occasions of Ananda Purnima small kids, youths, university students, parents, seniors and devotees of all walks of life - everyone moves together in one thread. So these social functions offer something for everyone, thus building the bridge of an ideal human society.

Indeed the joining and gathering for Ananda Purnima is a special event as it represents the union of everyone’s heart. This function is not like some crowd at the movie cinema, which is just a rag-tag collection of people with
their own individual agendas and separate thoughts. That is nothing but a crowd totally devoid of any family feeling. That is like one fake flower that is superficially colored yet carries no aroma. In contrast, our devotional, heart-felt gathering of Ananda Purnima reflects society in the deepest sense of the term where everyone is moving and smiling together as one integrated whole – ready to do each and everything for Baba and the humanity.

Thus at Ananda Purnima all are invited to sit together – money or other factors are not at all important. Everyone comes together regardless of one’s social status, career, educational background, or family history etc. It is a time for all grades of devotees to join together and gather for sweet celebrations, non-margiis are also invited – so long as they follow according to the sentient ways of the gathering. Only those anti-social elements, not at all interested in following the spirit of the program, should not be invited. Beyond that Ananda Purnima is a grand occasion for one and all.

ALL TYPES OF SOCIAL SERVICES

In addition, during Ananda Purnima all the trades and departments of AMPS partake in their respective social service programs. VSS optees do CSS, i.e collective social service such as public cleaning or repair work or other physical works for the security, safety, and welfare of the society etc. Side by side AMURT can operate their free medical clinics. In this way, Ananda Purnima is a day for doing all types of services because we Ananda Margiis are declassed and perform all the sevas.

A FRESH NEW START

Universal festivals like Ananda Purnima are also a time for forgetting about past differences and starting new relations. They are a time for a fresh new start where we bury old issues, forgive and forget, sit together, and invite a clean new beginning.

Baba guides us that in personal life it is best to forgive others with our full heart. Of course on matters of ideology or collective welfare we have no right to forgive anyone. But on personal affairs, forgiving others is the best course of action and what better time to do this than on the blissful occasion of Ananda Purnima.

THE IMPORTANCE OF FESTIVALS

Here following Baba is describing the great import that festive occasions like Ananda Purnima have on the human psyche. And that such social functions lead to the formation of a unified humanity.

Baba says, “When people become tired and uninspired, when they can no longer look towards the future with hope, when their colourful dreams are shattered, at that time the sweetness of a festival brings new joy and vigour in life. I hope that you will make such arrangements so that all are attracted towards your festivals which will be more and more charming – and this will bring about your collective welfare.” (A  Few Problems Solved -5, p.18)

Namaskar,

Shivadayal Deva

Note 1: USE BABA’S ORIGINAL ANANDA VANIIS –

NOT FAKE ANANDA VANIIS

Baba’s original and true Ananda Vaniis are His divine gifts for one and all as they encapsulate the spirit of Ananda Marga and the spirit of humanity. Thus, they are truly timeless and eternal treasures of humanity.

However, since 1990 certain respected leaders have been creating their own vaniis. They cut and paste quotes from previously posted discourses and call them Ananda Vaniis; when in fact the sentences they select are nothing but a small part of a greater discourse. They are taken out of context.

Baba’s original and true Ananda Vaniis are discourses unto themselves – complete, pointed, and stand alone as eternal truths and as spirited messages for the humanity. They are not mere quotes from other discourses. Baba's every Ananda Vanii is totally unique and original.

So what these leaders are doing is nothing but manufacturing Fake Ananda Vaniis. Yet they name these as Ananda Vaniis and read them on the occasion of A’nanda Pu’rn’ima’ etc. But again, these are nothing but Fake Ananda Vaniis.

What should we do?

While certain leaders continue creating Fake Ananda Vaniis, in each and every unit margiis should select one of Baba’s original timeless Ananda Vaniis and read that out at their Ananda Purnima celebrations.

Naturally, in due course, with circumstantial pressure, such persons will stop making Fake Ananda Vaniis. That day is fast approaching.

Note 2: LOCAL CELEBRATIONS ENCOURAGED

If any group is recommending that people come “to their place” – such as Tiljala, insinuating that theirs is best place for Ananda Purnima etc, then in our hearts and minds we should all know that Baba’s system is for Ananda Purnima to be celebrated locally in every unit, as His divine grace and presence is felt throughout this entire universe.

Note 3: THE ADVENT OF MAHASAMBHUTI

Baba says, “When He comes, after creating His own body with the help of the five fundamental factors– solid, liquid, luminous, aerial, ethereal – to create an ideological tidal wave, that is called as Maha’sambhu’ti. Maha’ means ‘great’, ‘having a form which is supra-natural’. And bhu plus ktin equals bhu’ti. Hence Maha’sambhuti means ‘The Great Creation’, ‘The Great Appearance’…[He comes] to push humans society forward, to resuscitate the half-dead human race, to awaken society– to create a wave in the field of ideology, in the social field, and in the field of humanity; [He comes] to
create a tidal wave in every dimension and on every level.” (Discourses on Tantra - 1, p. 136)

O Parama Purusa, this whole expressed universe is Your eternal game. You are ever-present: beginningless and endless. You are ever intoxicated in Your divine flow. You are the Goal of everyone – everyone wants You. You are remaining with one and all.

Baba, only those trying to come close to You by their virtuous deeds, shravan, manan, nididhyasana, & dhyana, are able to come to You. Only they are able to realise You and have Your grace and proximity.

Baba, You are grace-Personified…

== A’NANDA PU’RN’IMA’ CELEBRATIONS: BABA'S GUIDELINES ==

~ Part 1 ~

Note: This series of letters, "A’nanda Pu’rn’ima’ Celebrations: Baba's Guidelines", has four parts. Each part, presented by a different margii, offers complementary ways and descriptions for celebrating Ananda Purnima. Together, these letters paint a picture for how to commemorate this grand festival. We wholeheartedly welcome your suggestions as well. - AM-GLOBAL Moderators

Namaskar,

The auspicious and grand occasion of A’nanda Pu’rn’ima’ is coming soon.

The official day is Sunday, May 6 – though in many units celebrations start before then since A’nanda Pu’rn’ima’ is the most significant social function in our Marga.

WE ALL KNOW...

Of course we all know that the holy day of A’nanda Pu’rn’ima’ means Baba’s Birthday in colloquial parlance.

But He has graciously come to establish the lost humanity in divinity – elevating everyone’s standard, and paving the way for the reign of dharma.

A FEW MORE WAYS TO CELEBRATE THIS DAY

THE KEY POINT

In this way social functions and festivals are a time for us all to move together in His divine flow, regardless of one’s standard or status. Where one and all gather round in the spirit of unity. And top of all our special duty as devotees is to propagate the greatness and grandeur of Sadguru Baba. In a phrase we can say that this is the key point behind the auspicious occasion of A’nanda Pu’rn’ima’: To highlight Baba’s greatness.

Baba says, “The one formless, beginningless and infinite Parama Brahma (Supreme Consciousness) is the only entity to be attained by living beings— That alone is Jagat Guru (the Supreme preceptor), That alone has revealed Brahmavidya (intuitional science) to us through the medium of the name and form of Anandamurtijii. Unit beings must be made to appreciate Its majesty.” (Caryacarya II, p.1)

Namaskar,

Amriteshwar Deva

Note 1: SPIRIT OF OUR AM SOCIAL FUNCTIONS

The magnificent characteristic of all our Marga social gathering is that they welcome one and all irrespective of age, colour, race, profession, educational standard, etc, all types from all places are welcome. Indeed everyone comes together for sadhana, games, a feast, and other celebratory activities and by this way one social flow is formed thus making way for a healthy, unified human society.

Note 2: BABA’S BLESSING

On the celebratory occasions of our AM festivals like Ananda Purnima, Baba has graced us with this special blessing.

Baba says, “That which renews human existence and makes it full to the brim and overflowing with the joy of living is termed a festival...Inspire all people to live with a new spirit like true human beings. Let it inspire them with the fact that all humanity is an indivisible entity. On this auspicious day this is my inner wish.” (Ananda Vanii #48)

PRABHAT SAMGIITA

“A’sha’r pasara’ sahasa’ elo, a’lor tupha’n nikat’e elo...” (PS #3644)

Purport:

Suddenly Baba, the Divine Effulgence, has taken advent. The cyclone of divine effulgence has come close. His divine effulgence is immense, like a huge mountain covering the entire world. The whole world is inundated with the flood of divinity.

Even in remote corners, not even an iota of darkness was left. Not even a tinge of darkness or dirt could remain in anyone's mind. Everyone’s mind has become cleansed and purified. Parama Purusa Baba, with His divine effulgence, has taken advent and attracted everyone by the outpouring of love from His heart.

Everyone has received His special grace: Those bound in the cimmerian darkness and tied up in the deep, dark chasm, and those whose mind had accumulated dogma the size of a mountain. All are now basking in His divine grace. They have been blessed with the opportunity to look toward that divine effulgence. Their dogma and staticity vanished away with the advent of the new dawn.

Baba, the Parama Purusa, with His divine effulgence has come and showered His divine effulgence and graced everyone...

Stolen: Ananda Purnima Donation

== STOLEN: ANANDA PURNIMA DONATION ==

Note: At an Ananda Purnima function in Punjab, a fight broke out. Read the details below. With right awareness, we can prevent such incidents at the upcoming May 2012 Ananda Purnima celebrations.

Namaskar,
In Punjab, margiis have always celebrated the auspicious day of Ananda Purnima with much happiness, joy and enthusiasm. So many grand activities are planned: Narayan seva, service to the poor, fruit distribution to hospitals, clothing distribution, nagar kiirtan, colourful decorations, sumptuous food and more. All this has been the usual tradition.

When Ac Govindananda Avt was posted there and became in-charge of the unit, then he surveyed the scene and hatched his plan. He saw this as his golden opportunity.

He planned the unthinkable: To steal and embezzle on this holy occasion of Ananda Purnima (Baba’s birthday). What follow is the scene that transpired.

DADA'S PROPOSAL

In years previous, the margiis themselves used to organise the festival by collecting money from everyone in the unit and spending those funds in a grand way.

So Govindananda Dada told everyone that since he is the in-charge and the main executive person of the unit, then he should manage the finances for the Ananda Purnima celebration.

With full trust, the margiis readily accepted his proposal. In this way the Ananda Purnima festival was planned

DAY OF FESTIVAL BECOME DAY OF FIGHT

On the eve of Ananda Purnima, a smaller number of margiis arrived at the jagrti with high hopes of seeing beautiful decorations all around. So they were dismayed to find very few decorations. They also noticed that the evening meal was not up to the standard - it was not like festival food. They wanted to ask Dada about all this and tried to find him, but he was not around. They were perplexed and extremely disappointed and planned to approach Dada about this.

The next morning, with great anticipation, joy, and excitement the full gathering of margiis arrived at the jagrti for Ananda Purnima celebrations. Upon entering, they were quite shocked and dismayed to see the state of affairs. The environment seemed very plain and there were no supplies for their usual service projects. When the morning meal was served they saw that it was only a small amount of very plain and simple food. The whole affair lacked that festive spirit.

The margiis who donated large sums were frustrated and furious. To them, it was very apparent what had happened. They understood immediately that Dadaji had stolen most of the money.

They were outraged. Nothing had been arranged for narayan seva, feeding the poor, and serving the helpless.

The margiis asked for an account and Dada refused. Tensions were high and a fight erupted. One margii grabbed Dada and tore his gown and tossed his turban. Others started yelling, “Thief! thief! thief!” There was a big tussle.

Finally some margiis interceded and situation was calmed down.

RESOLUTION

When any program happens then some Dadas behave in this way. We should be alert. Ananda Purnima is coming soon.

When margiis organise everything then they do not steal or embezzle; they think this is a pious program and stealing is sinful. They do not want to invite any consequence, sin, or negative reaction.

But certain wt’s do not worry about such things. They are just like dogmatic priests who think they have control over everything and that they are beyond sin. Due to extreme arrogance this crude mentality develops. They are bound by avidya maya and they cannot understand their depraved state and sinful dealing.

Still Ac Govindananda is there in that unit. Everyone should be aware. Ananda Purnima is fast approaching: Do you know where your donation is going?

Namaskar,
Pradiip Deva

Note 1: HOW IT HAPPENED

A large amount of money was collected for the aforementioned Ananda Purnima festival as margiis wanted to celebrate in a beautiful way. But it was found out that Dada Govindananda pocketed 90% of the money; he spent a mere 10% of the money on the Ananda Purnima festival and celebration. All the rest Dada grabbed. If Dada had stolen only 5 or 10%, then margiis might not have noticed, or it would have been overlooked etc. But since Dada stole 90% of all the money, the margiis could not tolerate his greedy and sinful conduct. Dadaji embezzled (stole) the money to send back to his laokik village.

Note 2: LIST OF OTHERS INVOLVED

There are many workers including Ac Govindananda who collect money and send it to their laokik relations and side by side they secretly run private businesses for when they plan on leaving the organisation. The list of various Dadas behaving in this way we are going to bring to public notice. Then of course there are other Dadas who indulge in other negative activities.

Note 3: MOST WTS ARE GOOD

Of great importance is that despite the presence of workers like Govindananda who are financial and moral cheats, the vast majority of Wts are good people who want to do something in their life to please Baba. So no one should think that all workers are depraved and trustless. It is not like that. There are many, many sincere wholetimers.

Note 4: DONORS ARE ALSO RESPONSIBLE

After all people are often overpowered by avidya maya - including some of our Wt Dadas. So margii donors should always be acutely aware whether the money they donated is properly spent or not. Baba has given a warning in A Guide to Human Conduct (see tapah chapter). If you donate and it was misused then you are also guilty.

Baba says, "What place does knowledge or reasoning occupy in tapah sádhaná? This is a very important question. Truly speaking, far greater knowledge is required to render service pertaining to tapah than to render service pertaining to shaoca. Tapah devoid of knowledge is bound to be misused."

"The opportunists will misuse your energy by extracting work from you to serve their selfish ends, and at the same time this will deprive the real sufferers of their due services from you. A rich miser approaches you with a tale of woe and entreats you to give him relief. Being moved with pity, if you do what is needed to relieve him of his suffering, the very purpose of tapah will be defeated, as it is without any knowledge or reasoning. The end result of your service will be that the rich man whom you have served will become more miserly and more selfish and will, in the future, try to deceive in a greater way people who dedicate themselves to the service of humanity. Secondly, as you will, to some extent, know his inner motive, you will become mentally depressed and you will also develop a hostile attitude towards him."

"Therefore, while following the principle of tapah you should ascertain fully well whether the person you are going to serve, really needs your service. Only then should you engage yourself in service." (A Guide to Human Conduct, Tapah)

PRABHAT SAMGIITA

"Toma'ke bha'lo besechi, tumi shudhu mane a'cho..."  (Prabhata Samgiita #2562)

Purport:

Baba, I love You; only You are in my mind. You are my dearmost; You alone are mine; You are the only moon in my mental sky-- mental plate. Baba, except You, everything else in this entire universe is temporary. Everything comes for a short time and then get lost into thin air, into the oblivion. Baba, only You are beginningless and endless; only You remain permanently - eternally.

Baba, nothing lasts forever in this world. At the end of the day, night falls and the light of day gets engulfed by the darkness. Similarly, the darkness of the night vanishes with the advent of the brilliant new dawn. Thus everything in this world is changing, transient. But the constant pouring of Your divine effulgence continues on and on - it knows no limit; it knows no end.

Baba, I am loving You; You are always residing in my mind; You are my only polestar. Baba, You are my Goal; You are my everything...

Baba

== EASIEST WAY TO GET BABA'S BLESSING ==

Namaskar,
With the planning for Ananda Purnima celebrations in full-swing, everyone should be critically aware about the contents of this email.

Adhering to 16 Points is very difficult; fortunately however there is no need to pay
heed to these rules to get moksa.

If you have money, then each year you should purchase a huge quantity of firecrackers for Baba's birthday - that will bring you to your cherished Goal. And if you do not have sufficient funds then collect money from others and purchase fireworks. Thus on Ananda Purnima, you can create a huge noise and pollute the whole area.

If any margii does not want to give you money then demoralise them. Tell them that they do not have love for Baba and that they are non-margiis or secret agents of the enemy.

Utterly disregard whatever is written in Caryacarya part 1 regarding Ananda Purnima such as feeding the poor, hosting a medical camp, helping patients, or serving the needy. One need not do those things. Those are all outdated ideas.

Plus, if anybody is trying to do those things then discourage them.

Inspire all that shooting off fireworks is the easiest, quickest and smartest way to gain access to Baba's grace and virtue.

                                      A COPY OF MUSLIM DOGMA

Blasting fireworks (aka firecrackers) has become notorioulsy famous in the Marga of late as Dadas are copying such rituals from the Muslim world:

http://www.nytimes.com/learning/teachers/featured_articles/20001220wednesday.html

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUUSUQCpGvw

So just as certain Dadas created the dogmatic Mahaprayan program by copying the Islamic ritual of Ajmer Sharif (read this posting), now a similar trend is underway with regards to Ananda Purnima. That means copy the way Muslims celebrate their dogmatic festivals by shooting off fireworks.

By the firecrackers booming in the air, and the plumes of smoke rising up and spreading all around, the noise (& smoke) will resonate all the way up to heaven. It will reach Baba. He will listen and become satiated. Ultimately He will bless. That is the way it works.

                                 HERE'S HOW TO CELEBRATE

In this upcoming - May 17 - Ananda Purnima program of 2011, a huge blasting of fireworks is needed. This is the 90th birthday, so in order to please Him, 90,000 big firecrackers are needed. That means one thousand for each year.

Regarding the purchase of such firecrackers, do not worry about how much you spend-  spend as much as you can and take loan if necessary.

Let there be a competition between dadas & didis, margiis & avadhutas, acaryas & tattvikas, males & females, all should be involved. See who can put on the the biggest fireworks show. Inspire everyone to purchase at least $50,000 for their unit; prizes should be awarded.

                            FORGET ABOUT DOING SOCIAL SERVICE

All other social service projects like a children's home, schools or relief, are totally secondary. The fireworks show will be the top project - that will get top billing. And if anybody does not cooperate, then punish them.

It is not a joke - this is exactly what is going on in so many units - especially in Ranchi HQ and other places.

According to Baba's teachings, our AM slogan stands for: Liberation of self and service to humanity.

Liberation of self means doing sadhana and following 16 Pts; and service to humanity means rendering selfless service.

But unfortunately that is not the priority these days. Group leaders are instead copying the dogmatic religions. Shooting off fireworks is a mirror image of Islamic namaz on occasions like Eid / Ramadan etc. While performing namaz they create as much noise as they can.

Now see what is going on in the Marga.

Ranchi leaders and others have made the system that on Baba's upcoming
90th birthday, one has to shoot off firecrackers - and with each passing year, the number of fireworks and noise increases. Just add one more every year or more. Some now purchase firecrackers in large groups - by this way it will grow and grow and grow. After 2000 years, margiis will be forced to explode 2,000,000
firecrackers or more.

And when millions will be Ananda Margiis then you can imagine the situation on this planet. Everywhere there will be firecrackers and what about the pollution (air and land) they make.

Some people are commenting about global warming, and worrying about noise and and air pollution - just laugh at them. Just mock and demoralise them as being outdated.

In the future, some radical margiis will explode bombs in order to make a huge sound and gain quick grace and moksa. As a result, unfortunately many will lose their hearing, be exposed to fires & even undergo death. Indeed at last year's Ananda Purnima celebration in Ranchi, the pandal caught fire. The whole area was so polluted it was hard to breathe.

During the last Ananda Purnima celebration, one big firecracker cost 4000RS which is the amount one laborer earns while working full-time for months. DPS Dada did not do social service rather he spent all the money on firecrackers. That is why the food prepared in daytime was eaten in the evening as well, because there was no money for fresh food in evening due to the high cost of the fireworks. And this is in the summer season where the food gets stale very quickly.

So we should see what happens this year - be ready.

                                         MANY, MANY INJURIES

This coming Ananda Purnima - unfortunately - many AM children may suffer burns,
injuries, hearing loss & eardrum damage, and even hospitalisation.

Indeed, last time one margii got hospitalised and suffered permanent hearing loss and
ongoing pain.

And there is a dangerous history associated with firecrackers where people of all ages lose their limbs, vision, and so much more.

THE CURRENT SITUATION - RESOLUTION NEEDED

At present, the whole society is suffering from air pollution yet side by side the vanguards of humanity are polluting and encouraging others to pollute the environment by their grandiose fireworks displays on Ananda Purnima. There is a veritable competition between one group and the next, one jagrti and the next, one wt and the next etc.

In place of this type of dogmatic and stupid competition, there should be competitions in 16 Points, serving society and doing sadhana. That is how to celebrate Ananda Purnima.

Baba says, "There are still others who think that they can attain salvation by worshipping Parama Puruśa in a ritualistic manner by ringing bells or lighting candles, or offering flowers. No, they will also meet with equal failure because they are mere slaves of mechanical rituals [and doing fireworks]. By following such rituals these people become bound within hard and fast routine activities. At a particular time they will light candles, ring bells, clean plates, offer flowers to the deity etc.; and in actuality as their whole attention is diverted to those mechanical activities, their cosmic ideation is completely forgotten." (Subhasita Samhgraha, part 11, The Path of Salvation)

Now we have to think how we can solve this problem.

Namaskar,
Girish

O' Supreme Personality, please tell me, are You alone? Have You no

because You are searching for some companionship. Is that why You are

O' Divine Entity, of all the bhavas You are Mahabhava. You are the

                Health Guideline: Sleeping Related

"Do not sleep on a soft bed." (CC-3, Chap 6, Pt #4)

Note: This above point that Baba is describing has deep meaning. Some
ignorant people however who are unaware about health and hygiene get
swayed by pseudo-culture and they use a spring-loaded bed with thick
mattresses. But that is very detrimental for the various joints,
muscles, & organs of the body and it creates an ill-effect on the body
systems such as digestive disorders & diseases. Mostly because of
hunchback syndrome and because the stomach is pressed. Keeping this
view, including many more benefits, Baba has graciously introduced this
above rule. Everyone should follow this and then they will realise the
deeper aspect of its value.

Amongst conscious people it is commonly known that soft beds lead to the
onset of many diseases including incurable backaches and joint pain.

So one should be aware. One should not fall in the trap of momentary
pleasure and invite more dangerous diseases.

Note 2: Revealing the spiritual significance of this point, Baba guides
us that those who are using a hard bed in day to day life, their body
becomes more and more capable for intense psycho-spiritual practice.
Such sincere sadhakas keep away from using a pillow also.

THE DAY WHEN BABA TOOK THE POISON

                       AND SAVED THE UNIVERSE

                       FROM ITS GHASTLY EFFECT

Namaskar,
As we all know, the great Ananda Marga festival Niila Kantha Divas is on
Feb 12. Yesterday, there was a posting about Baba's famous darshan of that
day. And here below is more about the significance of this remarkable moment
in hisory.

The below story is about the "Niila Kantha". It is a famous and important story
of deep significance for all Ananda Margiis. And this has been written
about in numerous places. The main theme is the meaning behind the
name-- "Niila Kantha".

How has the name come & why do we call Baba as a "Niila Kantha". What
is the meaning, and how did it happen.

                       MEANING OF THE NAME

There is a reason behind the name, calling this 12th February as a
Niilakantha Divas. The reason behind that very day as an event is well
known. As this was the day Baba Himself swallowed the poison while in jail.

But there is also a reason behind the term "Niila Kantha". Why the
name Niila Kantha? That some persons may not know.

Niila Kantha is a Samskrta term. "Niila" means blue; "Kantha" means throat.
This is the literal meaning of Niila Kantha: Blue throat. And divas means
day. So the entire meaning of Niila Kantha Divas is "blue throat day".

                SIGNIFICANT MYTHOLOGICAL STORY

There is one mythological story related with this term "Niila Kantha". To
save the society from the poisonous effect of deadly poison or "Kal Ku't'",
Lord Shiva Himself swallowed, that entire poison.

In that mythological story, the churning of the ocean was arranged. The
ocean took the form of a bowl or mortar, as from 'mortar and pestle'. And
in the ocean one big mountain was placed as pestle, to churn the ocean. And
the mythological cobra Shes' Na'g, was tied as a rope around the mountain.
On one side of the mountain a party of demons were holding one end of the
rope-like cobra. And on the other side of the mountain a party of devatas
were holding the other end of the cobra, with which to move the mountain
back and forth. These two parties were involved by that way in using the
mountain to churn the ocean. And then various things emerged from the ocean
in the course of churning. One of them was, the deadly poison "Kal Kut'".

And that poison was so deadly, if it had remained there, then it would have
spread all around and destroyed everything. So to save the society, Lord
Shiva swallowed that.

Although we don't believe these mythological stories, but there is one
teaching behind this story. For that reason, I wrote this. And the teaching
is that, to save the society, Lord Shiva swallowed the poison and
controlled and digested it. So this is one great thing. Wherein serving the
society even by swallowing poison, this type of meaning is expressed in
this mythological story.

Because of all this inner meaning, Baba chose the term "Niila Kantha". And
He declared 12th February as a "Niila Kantha Divas". There is a literal
meaning and an inner meaning. The literal meaning is blue throat day. The
real inner meaning is, 'digesting poison to save humanity day'.

                     ADDITION TO THE STORY

Here I will add something further in connection with the story about Lord
Shiva. For that lends also deeper understanding about what occurred with Baba.

Seeing the situation with the deadly poison, Lord Shiva took it upon
Himself to swallow it. Otherwise, that very 'vish' (poison, or "Kal Ku't'")
would have annihilated a huge population. So Lord Shiva saved the society
by swallowing poison. He swallowed it and with His divine play, the poison
remained in Lord Shiva's throat permanently. And with its effect, the
poison created a blue mark all around Lord Shiva's neck. So permanently His
neck became blue. And yet it did not affect anything more than that, on the
body of Lord Shiva. So that's why one of the names of Lord Shiva is "Niila
Kantha" --Blue throat.

So this was the greatness of Lord Shiva that He swallowed the deadly
poison, with the only purpose to save the society from the disastrous
effect of that deadly poison, "Kal Ku't'". Saving the society was the only
motive. Nothing else.

                       BABA'S EXAMPLE

A similar thing happened, with Baba. We know that Taraka Brahma, when He
descends on this earth as Mahasambhuti. Superficially it looks like He is
human, but in reality, it is not. Because Mahasambhuti cannot be just one
human being, which is full of shortcomings and limitations. So Mahasambhuti
is capable of doing anything which He likes.

So it is with Baba. To save the society from the disastrous effect of much
deadly poison or many deadly and destructive weapons He Himself knowingly,
deliberately swallowed the poison -- To save the humanity from the deadly
effect of the poison of the society. And that is what happened symbolically
in the jail. AMPS was not yet banned, most of the WTs and Margis were
outside the jail. Then Baba took upon Himself the trouble of the entire
organization. And not only that, the entire society.

                           PLUS...

Not only the demon Indira Gandhi, but all demonic political groups like
communists were spreading their claws to grip the entire society
in their hold. Like serpents, they do. Because communism was most ghastly
in those days. So these demonic leaders' full attention turned towards
Shrii Shrii Anandamurtijii. By that way, they gave poison in the jail. And
Baba swallowed that.

                          OTHERWISE...

If Baba would not have done so, Indira Gandhi and communist Russia would
have done more ghastly things and killings - both to Ananda Marga and general
society. And they would have wreaked disaster on the earth. But
because Baba eliminated their negative plan. So everything was controlled
and everyone was saved.

And the outcome we see as later on, everyone saw that Indira Gandhi also
declared martial law in India. And that was not as ghastly as it would have
been. AMPS got banned. But those who are aware about Baba's divine play,
they know this truth that if Baba would not have taken the poison, then
Indira Gandhi would have brought more disaster on the country. Or
communists would have destroyed many more things in the entire globe.

And Indira Gandhi would have poisoned or killed many WTs and Margis. But
she could not do anything. Rather every one of us, those who were in jail,
they saw that Baba controlled the situation. And jail was very comfortable
in many regards. He changed thorns, turned into flowers. All trouble He
took on Himself. And digested everything to save us.

So those who do not have deeper understanding, they think that Baba was
poisoned in the jail, etc. And those who know the inner truth, and Baba's
way of playing His divine play, they know that by swallowing poison, He
saved the entire society from the deadly effect of various negative things.
Baba disclosed all this to many devotees while in jail. He
revealed the truth. On that very basis, I wrote here the above section
related with poisoning and saving the society.

                      CONCLUSION

So this "Niila Kantha" term and "Niilakantha Divas", has deep meaning.
And as we know that "Niila Kantha" means blue throat, and the
'blue throat' appeared because of swallowing the poison. And this name
Niila Kantha was related with Lord Shiva. And a similar thing happened with
Lord Anandamurtiji. That's why one of the names of Lord Anandamurtiji is
also Niila Kantha. Means, on 12 February day, since then Baba became "Niila
Kantha", He swallowed the poison, and saved the earth.

Namaskar,
Vidya Deva

Note 2:               REVERENCE TO GURU

Reverence should be given to Guru. In so many places Baba in His teaching
says, "...Trtiiyam' Gurupu'janam". This third point of success is
'reverence to Guru'.

That's why we don't shake hands with Guru or do just simple Namaskar. Or
not even pranam by touching feet. But rather, disciples always give very
high, heartfelt reverence by doing sastaunga pranam. That means, such type
of reverence which cannot be given to anyone else. Sastaunga pranam is only
for Guru, and Guru alone. No one else. So we can see that how much
greatness, Guru has.

That's why we see in Caryacarya 2nd part, the beginning point, Baba has
given very meaningful teaching. That is of one unparalleled type, related
with Guru. Please see--

Baba says, "The one formless, beginningless and infinite Parama Brahma
(Supreme Consciousness) is the only entity to be attained by living
beings-- That alone is Jagat Guru (the Supreme preceptor), That alone has
revealed Brahmavidya (intuitional science) to us through the medium of the
name and form of Anandamurtijii. Unit beings must be made to appreciate Its
majesty." (CC II p.1) [point 1a]

And in Ananda Sutram, one sutra Baba has given:

                 3-9  "Brahmaeva gururekah na'parah"

That means, Guru is Brahma. He is everything.

                                  PRABHAT SAMGIITA

"Tumi sudha'taraunge khelicho raunge saba'r saunge niyato..." (PS 700)

Purport:

Baba, You have been playing Your divine game since eternity. It is
filled with the vibration of colour and nectar. You are playing with one
and all. You never get tired; You never stop; You go on working day and
night. Your liila is eternal.
Even when there was no creation, no planets, stars or galaxies, and also
there was no existence of the vast sky, that time there was nothing. In
that great void since eternity You were ever-present, remaining alone. Even
before and prior to the beginning of the creation You were there, emanating
with Your divine vibration.
Baba Your liila cannot be expressed in words and language. Since
eternity You have been present and You will remain forever. You are the
Nucleus of this whole cosmic cycle...

             ***************************************
                          Where are we?

Baba says, "For the self-centered there is no place for feelings of mercy,
sympathy or camaraderie. The railway stations and market places are full of
half-clad beggars and lepers desperately stretching out their begging
bowls, earning their livelihood in the only way they know. They are
fortunate if anyone contemptuously flings them a copper coin. The old blind
beggars sitting all day long on the steps of a bridge automatically lift
their bowls whenever anyone walks past. But their hungry pleas fall on deaf
ears. On the other side of society, sumptuous dishes are being prepared to
entertain the rich dignitaries. These contrasts expose the hypocrisy of the
present society." (PNS-7, p. 56)

Note: Unfortunately a similar disparity is also continuing in our AM. When
so-called "big Dadas" visit then their subordinates-- post holding margiis
& Wts-- hover around to please and gratify them. But on the other side
there are countless cases of very poor Wts, yet rarely does anyone ask
about their welfare and needs, even in their sickness and destitute
condition. Indeed, there are innumerable examples around the globe where
such WTs died without proper care.

Baba's Darshan of Niilkantha Divas

Baba

          == BABA'S DARSHAN OF NIILKANTHA DIVAS ==

Namaskar,
We all know that the festival of Niilkantha Divas stands as one great
occasion in our AM society. That of course marks the day-- Feb 12,
1973-- when in the divine liila of Parama Purusa, Baba Himself swallowed
the poison dealt to Him by those sinful forces during His incarceration.

Upon initial reflection, one might sincerely think this day of
Niilkantha is a time to grieve or be sorrowful and to solemnly recall
the past-- since after all this was the time when a dreadful attack was
done against our Sadguru. In this way some were thinking those days.

To clear the matter to one and all, in His divine way Baba Himself has
guided us that Niilkantha Divas is a day of great joy and tremendous
dharmic spirit that holds long-term & far-reaching ideological
significance. Hence, Baba has declared this day as a full-fledged
festival in AM-- full of merriment and righteous action.

I WAS THERE ON THAT OCCASION

By Baba's fathomless grace I was present at that very morning general
darshan on 12 Feb 1979 in Patna when Baba Himself has given the full
descriptive analysis about the inner meaning of Niilkantha Divas as well
as how it should be celebrated. By Baba's grace I could note down the
various scenes and expressions of that blissful day in my diary. And all
of that-- my entire journal entry from that very occasion-- is presented
down below in this email.

                     ONE SPECIAL SIGNIFICANCE

Perhaps of greatest import regarding this day is that Baba has declared
Niilkantha Divas as a day to oppose any and all injustices and sinful
acts-- wherever one may be. Baba wants that Niilkantha be an extra
special occasion where we whole-heartedly raise our voice and take a
staunch stand against all sorts of misdeeds committed by those terrible
sinners of the present.

According to Baba, it is a time when we are to express our sentient
anger (sattvika krodha) and forcibly create the necessary circumstantial
pressure to make those unrighteous and wicked people give up their nasty
activities and mend their unjust ways. It is a time bring negative
elements onto the path of welfare. This is one of the special aspects of
Niilkantha Divas.

And here following is more about this entire occasion of this great and
holy AM festival.

                 LITERAL MEANING OF NIILKANTHA DIVAS

Niila Kantha is a Samskrta term. "Niila" means blue; "Kantha" means
throat. This is the literal meaning of Niila Kantha: Blue throat. And
'divas', as we all know means day. So the entire meaning of Niila Kantha
Divas is "blue throat day". As this was the day when Baba Himself
allowed His throat to 'turn blue' by swallowing the deadly poison that
those papiis gave Him when He was in jail.

FIRST-HAND ACCOUNT OF BABA'S DARSHAN THAT DAY
(Directly from my diary notes of that occasion)

Here now begins my first-hand account of what transpired at that morning
general darshan of the first celebration of Niilkantha Divas after Baba
was released from jail. As all may recall Baba Himself came out from the
Jail towards the end of 1978. So Baba's below darshan took place on
Monday, 12 February 1979 in Patna, six years to the day of that
poisoning incident.

                         ---

As Baba majestically appears on the scene at that morning General
Darshan the Margiis vigorously raise the slogan, 'Niilkantha Baba Kii--
Jai!!'.

Hearing this Baba lovingly jokes with the margiis and says, 'Enemies
wanted to kill Me but by your well-wishing I was saved'.

Then, in a very sweet and caring way, Baba states that up till now
margiis have been observing a fast on this day and treating Niilkanth
Divas as a solemn occasion. But why should margiis fast on this day, He
says. Rather, instead of fasting, Baba says that we should follow
sentient anger-- sattvika krodha, not tamasik krodha (static anger), aka
revenge.

Baba then explains that sadhus do sattvik krodha; and Baba begs the
question, what is sattvika krodha?

Baba explains: Sattvika krodha is a day of sentient anger where
righteous people oppose all wrongdoings and injustices. On this day of
Niilkantha Divas, Baba declares that it is the duty of dharmikas to put
forth a challenge to all sinful and wicked forces. To bring about the
needed momentum and force those sinners to change their ways and rectify
themselves. It is a day when righteous people in one voice strongly
stand up against injustices.

After Baba raises the dharmic point about sattvika krodha He raises
another aspect of this festival of Niilkantha Divas.

Baba says: You know that on this day sinners gave Me poison. And what
should you do? According to your capacity and strength, you should serve
the best and tastiest food possible to one needy person-- lovingly feed
them up to their heart's content.

Baba continues: In return for the poison which we received, you should
offer nectar (a'mrta).

Baba clarifies: According to your capacity serve the highest calibre and
best food possible to at minimum one person. Margiis can serve food to
more persons than that, but at least one needy person-- margii or
non-margii-- you should serve. And our wholetimers should do the same.
In the case of avadhutas or wholetimers who do not have money, they will
have to beg and get the necessary money in order to serve food to at
least one needy individual.

This is Baba's dharmic directive for this day.

...Then there is a short lull.

Margiis then respectfully request Baba that He should say something.
Baba sweetly replies, 'Oh I have to say something'. (margiis laugh)
Then in a jolly and joyful way Baba says, 'Let Ramananda say something'.
In a reverential way Ramanandji politely requests Baba to speak instead.

Baba indicates that Ramanandji should speak first.

Ramanandji begins, 'Actually you know on 12th February 1973 on this very
day Baba was poisoned in Bankipur Central Jail. This conspiracy was
hatched up by the CBI, those who since the very beginning are trying to
finish Baba from this world. So on this very day in 1973 He was poisoned
in the Jail. Actually I was the first visitor to visit His cell. When I
saw Him lying on the bed then He was not in position to move; He was not
in position to speak and I came to know...'

And for the next minute or two Ramanandji continues to explain how he
understood and got confirmation from doctors that Baba had indeed been
poisoned.

Then Ramanandji tells, "We just tried that there should be an inquiry
into this incident that who is behind..."

Baba interjects, "Judicial proof."

Ramanandji continues, "Who is the person behind this nefarious work. So
we wanted judicial inquiry-- judicial proof. Then [because] the Indira
government... never gave us the opportunity to express ourself to place
the fact before the public that what are the things. She suppressed this
point. She  did not institute inquiry. Then Baba was compelled to go on
fast from 1 April 1973 and He continued His fast up to 1 Aug 1979."

Then many people politely say, "1978".

Then in a very decent and humble way, Ramananda corrects himself and
says, "1978-- sorry".

Ramanandji continues, "So 5 years, 4 months, and 1 day He continued His
fast. So these things, actually..."

Then Revered Baba graciously offers what He told the leader of India
regarding the poisoning incident.

Baba says: 'I wrote a letter to the President of India that I know who
are the black hands working from behind the curtain'.

This was Baba's dharmic message to the corrupt leaders those days.

Thereafter Ramanandji continues to explain how so many letters were
written and how so many problems happened. There were so many torments
and difficulties and some did self-immolation in order to get justice.
Baba says, 'So many boys and so many girls died.'

Ramanandji explains that up till today we were not knowing how to
celebrate this day. The question was proposed what the day should be
called and we collectively decided it should be-- Niilkantha Divas. But
since 1973 we did not have proper guidance how to observe this occasion.

Ramanandji explains how Baba asked them earlier their opinion how to
celebrate the day. And none of the Dadas present could give an
acceptable reply. And then it was at that moment that Baba first
beautifully revealed the concept of sa'ttvika krodha as well as the
program of feeding at least one person a tasty and savory meal. (All of
which is described up above.)

Note: This concludes my diary entry from that memorable morning general
darshan of 12 February 1979.

                          ---

SOME UNIQUE ASPECTS OF NIILKANTHA DIVAS

Hence Niilkantha Divas is not something that is limited or just related
with that particular historical incident, but it also has a long-term
ideological significance.

So it is not just a point of history but a way to live life in a new
way. It is a day to oppose injustices. That is the purpose.

Up till now, through this present moment in 2007, this aspect of
sentient anger has mostly ignored or forgotten during our Niilkantha
celebrations.

Yet as shown above, Baba has clearly given the point of opposing
injustices-- especially on this day of Niilkantha Divas. And those who
were also present that time can also confirm that Baba has told like this.

So just like other festivals have their own specific purposes such as:
Light festival, Spring festival, Ananda Purnima etc. Likewise Niilkantha
Divas has its own special significance.

In the past usually we were just feeding people, but the significance is
more than that. By Baba's direction we are to take the strong resolution
and vow to fight against injustices and establish dharma.

The various religions just give lectures and then feast during their
festivals. But our Marga is not like that. All our festivals are joyous
and hold the seed of dharma and righteousness also.

During our Niilkantha Divas it is our dharmic duty to change sinners
into good people. By Baba's grace we are to save and rectify them.

In this grand endeavour of following the proper spirit and guideline of
Niilkantha Divas, Baba's eternal blessing is with us every step of the way.

Namaskar,
Amoghasiddhi

Note 1:             SA'TTVIKA KRODHA

In His below teaching Baba clearly outlines the meaning of sentient
anger-- sa'ttvika krodha.

Baba says, "Suppose a very good man is harshly rebuking an immoral
person for having insulted him. Is that unfair? No, no, it is not
unfair. It is called sentient anger. Anger is static; but sometimes it
may be sa'ttvika, it may be sentient. And that type of anger is sentient
anger-- sa'ttvika krodha in Sanskrit." (AV-2, p.73-4 Sept '78)
So once again on this occasion of Niilkantha Divas we are to follow
Baba's directive of Sattvika Krodha and oppose injustices wherever they
may be present. We are to help guide this whole humanity into the era of
white peace and righteousness. That is the grand spirit of Niilkantha
Divas.

                               PRABHAT SAMGIITA

PS Intro: In this following song the devotee is lying at Baba's lotus
feet, ensconced in a'nanda. And in that deeply devotional atmosphere,
the sadhaka is desperately calling to all the jiivas to also come close
to Baba, the Parama Purusa incarnate, and have His darshan and get His
blessing.

"Ba'n'sga'rii bahiye ja'y, saha's nayane ca'y
Goloker hari a'ji gokule liila' raca'y..."  (P.S. 3658)

Purport:

Today, the Hari of the divine world has manifested His liila in the
land of devotees. With His sweet grace He is moving all around playing
His divine flute-- showering His charming smile and gracious eyes upon
all. With reddish lips, He is beckoning each and everyone. He is
telling: 'Come close, come to Me-- quickly, as soon as possible, come
running, so we can be together up to eternity'. Today that Hari of the
divine world is showering bliss on everyone. We are so graced.
Everyone is His kith and kin; all are His own; nobody is alien.
No one is far; everyone is close. All are His most intimate ones.
By His grace everyone gets Him in their thinking, japa, and meditation.
Everyone resides in His mind; everyone has a place in His heart.
By His causeless grace, now the river of devotion is flowing at
high current. His divine rasa is dancing, overflowing, & splashing
in ecstasy. With His fathomless grace the garland of waves is swaying
to and fro. All are ensconced in His bliss.
For crushing the dus't'a (demonic people) and for saving & nurturing
the virtuous & dharmic people and for destroying the nefarious and
deadly demons, He comes again and again on this earth with the rumble,
twang, and beating of His kettle drum. There is no one else on this
earth who has such infinite and countless qualities. That Hari of the
divine world is the abode of all heavenly attributions.
Come one, come all. The Lord of the universe has come today with
gracious splendour, and He is showering His divine liila upon all
devotees. He is most loving and ever-gracious...
