== IS ACARYA A MIDDLEMAN BETWEEN YOU AND PARAMA PURUSA ==

Namaskar,
In one very unique discourse, by way of analogy, Baba explains the role of an acarya.

In this letter please find:
(A) Original Hindi Transcription from Baba's Darshan on 24 Nov 1979;
(B) A Summary in English of Baba's Guideline;
(C) An English Purport.

ORIGINAL HINDI TRANSCRIPTION:

FROM 24 NOV 1979

(Ananda Vacanamrtam - Part 16 (Hindi), Chapter 16, 24 Nov 79, Delhi)

ENGLISH SUMMARY:

ACARYA IS NOT A MIDDLEMAN

The devotee has a direct link or relation with Parama Purusa. The relation does not go via a third party or middleman.

For instance, if you want to see your father but lost your way to the house, then you will ask someone, get directions, and see your father.

The same is the case with the sadhaka and Parama Purusa. Every sadhaka has a direct relationship with Parama Purusa. The acarya is a guide who shows the path. So there is no one in between you and Parama Purusa.

Some people say that living beings are a slave (das) of Parama Purusa. But that is not correct. The relation between jiivas and Parama Purusa is a family relation. Some people say that, "I am a slave."  No, why are they a slave. They have a family relation. With Parama Purusa there is no Master-slave relation. It is family relation. The whole universe is His creation. It is within His mind. You are His. You are His dearest. The relation is that of a family member.

THERE IS NO MIDDLEMAN BETWEEN YOU AND PARAMA PURUSA

By the above teaching, it is clear every devotee has a direct relation with Parama Purusa. That is not the case in the various religions where followers cannot worship God directly. If on their own they try, then "it will not be fruitful" - they will not reach God. That is the prevailing religious dogma. So all ceremonies and programs must be performed by a middleman (mullah, priest, rabbi, minister, purohitas, reverend, etc). Religious officials act as a middleman between the common person and their God.

But in Ananda Marga, there is no middleman. Acaryas are not like middlemen (mullahs, priests, rabbis, ministers, purohitas, reverends, etc). That is perhaps one of the biggest differences between Ananda Marga and the various religions. In Ananda Marga, every sadhaka has a direct link with Parama Purusa.

Unfortunately, in India I have seen that because of the reigning Hindu dogma, naive margiis think that acaryas are like purohitas. Without them, no ceremony can move ahead. A similar situation may be brewing in other countries where other dogmatic religions are dominating.

The middleman theory was created with only one purpose in mind: To exploit the situation. Those religious leaders wanted all communication to go via them. They wanted 100% control to get maximum economic gain and enhance their prestige. By imposing this middleman dogma, they could command the people and carry out systemic exploitation. They wanted everyone to follow their order, pay them dues, and bow down to them.

Also, by investing full authority within themselves, they had the power to create new dogmas for their own self-interest. This was their mechanism for perpetuating their exploitation and always keeping themselves on top.

Such priests gave themselves the ultimate power: To open the door to heaven or hell. Ananda Marga is not like this; every sadhaka has a direct relationship with Parama Purusa.

Namaskar,
in Him,
Caetanya

PRABHAT SAMGIITA

PS Intro: This below song represents that extremely high stance of devotion wherein the bhakta has an irresistible desire to get Him. It is similar to a small infant who has the deep desire to have its mother: then that child cries solely for its 'maa', due to its strong love and attachment for its mother. Likewise, in this song, the bhakta can think of nothing else than his Ista, and in that highly devotional state, tears rain down out of a heart-felt love for Parama Purusa. So the devotee is already close to the Lord yet yearns to get Him closer and still more close. That is the great devotional longing that this song represents. And that is why the sadhaka is crying - because he wants that Baba should grace him by coming closer. Such ardent longing for Parama Purusa is evidenced in the lives of extraordinary sadhakas like Surdas, Meerabai, and other great bhaktas.

"Priyatama prabhu a'ma'r, toma'ri tare ankhi jhare..." (PS 1412)

Purport:

O' Prabhu, my most Beloved, I love You so much but I am not getting You. You are remaining far. My eyes are showering tears for You day and night. I am crying for You. Baba, please come, I want You in a more intimate way. O' my Lord I am searching for You. Where are You, in which far distant, unknown place have You gone - I do not know. Baba, You have left me by the sarita' tiire [1] - by the river bank - bound up in my bundle of samskaras, while You Yourself have gone to some divine land. O' Baba, I am crying for You. Please grace me by coming close.

Baba, by your grace I only know You; only You are my Goal. Many crave name and fame or have attachment for their homeland or country etc. O'
my Lord, I only love You. Everything I do is only for You - to please You. When I sing and dance it is only for You, when I play Prabhat Samgiita, it is only for serving and pleasing You - to fulfill Your desire. I do not sing Prabhat Samgiita to show off my own greatness and musical talent, but rather to make You happy. Baba, by Your grace, whatever ego I have, it is only sentient ego [2] for You - all my thoughts and deeds are revolving around You, not for satisfying my personal petty desires. By Your grace, whatever I think, whatever I do, is for You - to please You.

Baba, I may be a lowly sadhaka. I do not feel that I have done a lot of sadhana in my life. Because of this, perhaps for this reason You are keeping me distant. Perhaps that is why You are neglecting me and leaving me all alone. Neither do I have good deeds to my name, nor are my thoughts pious, nor is my ideation pure. Is this why You have forgotten me and left me and gone to some far distant unknown heavenly abode, and not returned back [3]. O' my Lord, please grace me by coming close.

Baba, I long for You and I surrender at Your alter - You are my Goal, You are my everything...

NOTES FOR PRABHAT SAMGIITA #1412:

[1] Sarita' tiire: (Literally sarita' means 'river' & tiire means 'bank' or 'shore') The river means the river of bhava - sometimes depicted as bhava sagar (ocean)-- the bundle of samskaras that one has to cross to reach Parama Purusa. That is the analogy being made here. The devotee is sitting by the river bank wondering how he will cross the river of samskaras and reach to Parama Purusa, Baba. Without His grace, one cannot cross that river or ocean of samskaras. And without exhausting all these samskaras one cannot get mukti or moksa. So His grace is needed. All in all, the devotee is longing to get Him and in that longing he is making the loving accusation to Parama Purusa - 'Why have You left me and gone to some divine land while I sit here by the river bank surrounded by my samskaras'.

[2] Abhiman: In Sanskrit the term 'abhiman' means 'sentient ego'; where as in Bengali 'abhiman'  not mean 'wounded pride'. Depending on the song, one has to evaluate the scene and determine which meaning is more appropriate.

[3] Here in this last portion of the song, the devotee is trying to do sadhana and bring Parama Purusa in his close proximity. Since it is difficult, the sadhaka makes this loving accusation towards Parama Purusa that 'You have gone away'. But it does not mean that really Baba has gone. Just it means that He is not coming as close as the sadhaka desires. In his heart of hearts, the bhakta thinks that Parama Purusa is close by and listening to his complaint. So it is just a loving accusation by the devotee in order to bring Parama Purusa close. It is similar to how in our day to day life we use such expressions with our very close people, with our nearest and dearest relations. One might say, 'Why did you leave me', 'why did you abandon me', 'why did you forget about me' etc. All these expressions people use when they are extremely close with someone. Children say such things to their moms etc.

Health Guideline: Sleeping Related

"Do not sleep on a soft bed." (Caryacarya - 3, Chap 6, Pt #4)

Note: This above point that Baba is describing has deep meaning. Some ignorant people however who are unaware about health and hygiene get swayed by pseudo-culture and they use a spring-loaded bed with thick mattresses. But that is very detrimental for the various joints, muscles, & organs of the body and it creates an ill-effect on the body systems such as digestive disorders & diseases. Mostly because of hunchback syndrome and because the stomach is pressed. Keeping this view, including many more benefits, Baba has graciously introduced this above rule. Everyone should follow this and then they will realise the deeper aspect of its value.

Amongst conscious people it is commonly known that soft beds lead to the onset of many diseases including incurable backaches and joint pain.

So one should be aware. One should not fall in the trap of momentary pleasure and invite more dangerous diseases.

Note 2: Revealing the spiritual sigificnace of this point, Baba guides us that those who are using a hard bed in day to day life, their body becomes more and more capable for intense psycho-spiritual practice. Such sincere sadhakas keep away from using a pillow also.

Namaskar,

Shocking incident, you say.

I don't think that this is shocking at all. Many senior margiis and senior acarya's behavior is disgraceful / distasteful and we are getting so immune to this animalistic behaviour.  Nowadays, it's becoming the norm in AM culture and then talk of the art of concealing this behavior from the rest of the AM family or blame the victim of such a crime - this is the nature of domestic violence (DV) which our Baba condemns out of our lives forever as in CaryaCarya-I.

So in short, there should be some counselling for the child and the Didiji who were attacked and there should be some DV (domestic violence) counselling for the attacker Didi but our AM structure has not fully flourished to offer this service.

So now it has passed; but it's not too late - it's time to address this large-scale issue that sucks the life blood out of our society and daunts children and women and men in some cases. DV (domestic violence) has to stop and AM Central really needs to implement some concrete measure to address this issue by setting up MU's all over the world with boot camps run by experienced psychologists within the marg who understand and have insight into the mentality of such violators and their impact on their family.  It's quite easy to pick out families within the marg who have DV (domestic violence) interwoven in them who portray a life of surrealism.  I'm sure close family acaryas would know what I am talking about.  All acaryas should undergo training regarding this ahimsa [1] in thought, word and action, and really be given the psychological tools for addressing / practicing these principles in daily life and also be educated on how to disperse and share that info diplomatically to the offenders. Acaryas should not hide behind the fact that it is a family matter and they shall not interfere.  Women and children need a voice as well and they need to be heard.

For this Didi to hurt the second Didi, she must have experienced this type of violence on herself and was a victim as well.  We need to break this cycle by better education and reprogramming the brain to react to situations in a choice mode and not in an automatic mode (the way we were grown up) - Baba Nam. It is VITAL that we, as a large community, identify that if VSS central Didi is carrying on like this then we have to better elect and educate those Didi's in higher positions of the way we would like to be treated by others - and we ourselves need to behave in that manner - it is very difficult for offenders of violence to change without proper psychological expert guidance.

This animalistic instinct / samskaras are ripened during our practices and need to be dealt with proper care when in the objective world by doing lots of service but not everyone is able to realise that.

In summary and in all seriousness,
1.  Awareness or Peace Camps
2.  Service / sadavrata (not forgetting that lovely kiirtan we drown in and bliss out)

This is very important and needs high priority even in this tumultuous state of the organisation.  It would be a good starting point for sharing the love.

Namaskar
from one AM victim to thousands out there.

Your Sis

"One day during the camp, young girl [Adiiti 4 1/2 yrs old] was hungry. Because this was a new place for her, the young child wandered around looking for some food, and entered into the room of one global VSS Didi. VSS Didi was not in her room. Someone saw this little girl there and gave her something to eat. Within a short time, VSS Didi returned back to her room and saw the child eating the sweets, which she (VSS Didi) had secretly been keeping under her cot. In her fury, VSS Didi immediately slapped the child, and then angrily abused and scolded her harshly. The young girl burst into tears - sobbing and sobbing - completely upset and shaken by what had happened.

Immediately, DSL Didi came running and found her home girl in tears. DSL Didi consoled the child and put her on her lap. She calmed her down and gently said, "You know that when you need something you should ask me. Why did you enter that room and eat there. Let me know and I will help you." DSL Didi was very nurturing and reassured the young girl. The young girl started to feel better.

But VSS Didi overheard what DSL didi was saying and then mightily attacked DSL Didi. VSS Didi grabbed Didi's hair and started punching her. It was a vicious attack, but DSL Didi did not fight back. She absorbed the blows set on her by VSS Didi. It was a brutal and torturous scene.

Baba

==  RE: 'I DO NOT BELONG TO ANY GROUP' ==

                       ~ Part 3 ~

Namaskar,
With the upcoming meeting on 25 - 27 Mar just a few days away we must
all keep ourselves alert to the central problem that has plagued
our organisation since 1990.

Here we again reflect on what it is like to be a Wt, and even margii,
in today's factional climate as well as what it means to be part be
wholly independent of any groupist affiliation.

It is not at all easy being a Dada or acarya in this present era:
Groupism is rampant, donations are down, and so many things are going
on. So it just is not an easy, time. If one does not acquiesce to
groupist demands and factional pressures, then often Dadas are
marginalised and victimised.

That is why, in this present era, I have full sympathy and deep regard
for those who are trying to sincerely carry out their duty of acarya:
Teaching sadhana and morality, and following 16 Pts etc. And if anyone
has the courage and strength to openly declare, 'I am not a groupist, I
do not belong to any group', then I truly hold them in high regard.

And I hope others will also consider the above when assessing the
strength of our Dadas.

REALLY? THEY DO NOT BELONG TO ANY GROUP

Within that niche of acaryas-- amongst those who claim not to be
affected by the tidings of any group-- there are a few who undermine the
sanctity of the proclamation, 'I do not belong to any group'.

Because that particular statement carries a strong vibration, expresses
a wonderful courage, puts forth a call to dharma, yet if in saying that
one continues to follow the various groupist dogmas, then that is not at
all good. And it stains the very glory of the statement, 'I do not
belong to any group'.

For example, if one says, 'I do not belong to any group', but then reads
out the Fake Ananda Vaniis from all the groups-- as happened at one
retreat-- then can we really say that Dada is not a groupist. Because
what should have been done is that one of Baba's original and true
Ananda Vaniis should have been read at Ananda Purnima, not some groupist
concoction / Fake Ananda Vanii.

Similarly, come the time of the dogmatic Mahaprayan or dogmatic Jamalpur
tiirtha, then a Dada who claims, 'I do not belong to any group', should
not then be recruiting margiis to attend these factional programs. Yet
that is what we see happening.

And the strange thing is that, some of these so-called non-groupist
Dadas do not just partake in the events of one faction, they indulge in
the groupist dogmas of all the camps. Because by that way they get extra
money, good food, a desirable posting, and other perks. So this scene is
not at all becoming of an acarya, and it undermines those sincere Dadas
who truly are keeping groupism at arms length.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN NOT TO BE IN ANY GROUP

All this brings the question then, 'What does it mean not to belong to
any group?'.

Does it merely mean not putting your name on their groupist roll call,
yet participating in all their functions: Attending meetings of every
group and rallying around all their dogmatic ceremonies like Mahaprayan
and Jamalpur tiirtha programme, manipulated BP elections, and scriptural
distortions etc. Obviously not.

Not belonging to any group means not getting mixed up in or following
any groupist dogma. That is the cent-per-cent meaning of that statements.

So if one Dada bravely ascertains, 'I do not belong to any group', then
we must first watch and see if they read out Fake Ananda Vaniis, or if
they take money on the side from any group, or if they convince others
to attend the dogmatic Mahaprayan programme, or if they attend any
groupist meeting.

Why do I say like this, why write such a letter. Because now, opposing
groupism has become the fashion. It is in vogue.

Hence various Dadas are telling, 'I do not belong to any group', as they
think then margiis will give them due respect and support them
financially etc. For that reason, various Dadas tell like that. It is a
winning proclamation: 'I do not belong to any group'.

But that phrase is rendered meaningless the moment such Dadas attend any
groupist party as a so-called 'outsider' or 'neutral person'.

That does not exist. It is just like saying that, 'One is not part of
any crime gang, yet one accompanies various thieves of different gangs
when they rob banks or steal from old ladies etc. Then the whole idea of
saying, 'I do not belong to any gang' is absolutely meaningless, nay
hypocritical.

Similarly, to say, 'I do not belong to any group', but then to
participate in all kinds of groupist dogmas and factional meetings is
totally hypocritical. Yet so many Dadas do like this.

                       NEGATIVE REACTION

And that has, at minimum two negative reactions or poor effects.

Firstly, it undermines the integrity of those Dadas who really are not
supporting any group or any factional agendas.

Secondly, it fails to support our AM mission. Because our aim is to put
forth Baba's ideals, yet if one is mixed up in groupism in any way,
shape, or form, then it is then impossible to be an example of Baba's
teachings. Then one can never propagate the ideals of AM.

Hence, if any Dada is giving lip service to the phrase, 'I do not belong
to any group', but then lending his mind and body to all kinds of
groupist propaganda from all the various factions, then their stance is
totally hypocritical. And, please excuse me, but they are ruining their
career.

In a sense, then they are worse than groupist captains like
Sarvatmananda and Rudrananda etc. Because those group leaders at least admit
to being part of a particular camp and they only follow the dogma of
their group; whereas various Dadas say they are not part of any group,
yet then follow the dogmas of all the groups. In that sense such
so-called non-groupist are worse than Sarvatmananda and Rudranana
because (a) they are being hypocritical, and (b) they are following more
dogmas.

                  RESPECT TO ALL TRUE ACARYAS

I consider the ideal of an acarya to be one of the highest things of
life, and those can only be acaryas if they are free from any groupist
tendency. Merely saying, 'I do not belong to any group', and then
succumbing to each and every groupist dogma like Fake Ananda Vanii and
manipulated BP elections, does not qualify one as a non-groupist, let
alone an acarya.

Baba says, "Those who have the responsibility to show the path to others
should be of superlative character with the most refined conduct. They
and their followers must move constantly towards all-round development
and shreya [ultimate spiritual attainment]. Persons who teach such
well-regulated behaviour to others by their own conduct are called
a'ca'ryas...The a'ca'rya should give direction and guidance in every
work, big or small. When he  is to impart any duty to anyone, he should
be strict, strong and exact, like a diamond. He should never consider
social position, wealth, rank, etc." (AV-31)

As Baba tells us above, a true acarya must be strict on the path of
dharma not be swayed by any group sentiment; and this must be reflected
in their conduct, not just in their parrot-like tongue that speaks, 'I
do not belong to any group'.

                        BABA'S BLESSING

By His divine grace, we will overcome this problem of groupism and the
first step is by recognising who is who. Only those who sincerely adhere
to Baba's mandates-- renouncing groupism in thought, word, and deed--
can be thought of as being true in their sadhana and mission of life.
Recognising such persons and following them will lead to greatness and
the end of groupism.

Baba says, "That is why I say that you will have to dedicate yourselves
to His feet wholly and unreservedly. You will earn godliness in
proportion to the extent that you surrender yourselves, and finally,
after merging that acquired godliness of yours in His Entity, you will
attain eternal bliss." (Subháśita Saḿgraha Part 3)

Namaskar,
Shantatma

                          PRABHAT SAMGIITA

"Toma'ke peyechi a'mi...ahetukii krpa' kare nebe ele dhara' dite.." -PS
#2672

Puport:

Baba, You came in my sadhana with Your sweet effulgence. I got You in my
mind. I want to remain holding You up to eternity. My mind does not agree to
leave You at any cost, in any condition. I will not leave You. I did not have
proper sadhana so with Your grace, You hold me. Not because of my sadhana or
virtue. By Your causeless grace, You came down and let Yourself be held by me.
Oh Baba...

        ********************************************
                  Meaning of Baba's Blessing

Baba says, "That which leads to one's physical, psychic and spiritual
well-being is called 'hita'; that which leads to one's psychic and
spiritual well-being is 'kalya'n'a'; and that which leads to one's
spiritual well-being is 'ks'ema'."  (AV-8, p. 47)

Note 1: Most of the time at the end of His discourses Baba gives His
blessing, Kalya'n'amastu-- "that which leads to one's psychic and spiritual
well-being". But unfortunately in English translated books the editors have
simply written it as "Let there be welfare". Obviously then this is not working
properly.

Because the term 'welfare' is commonly used in crude materialistic
societies where there is no sense of spirituality or Godhood. And Baba's
blessings are always related with Divine blessings; as Guru as Parama Purusa,
as Taraka Brahma, as Mahasambhuti-- He blesses divinely. But that divine
quality is conspicuously absent or missing entirely from the mundane term
'welfare.'

So when our new margiis read, "Let there be welfare", then they may think
that it is related with a court case, or children's problems, or getting
some unemployment bonus etc. Because even here in India the Social Welfare
Department is just one mundane group that distributes food rations at a
lower profit or helps in flood circumstances, or does other types of
external dealings etc. Means they do not do anything in the realm of
spirituality-- and in all the countries it is like this. That the 'Welfare
Dept' is just involved in crude things.

The culminating idea is that: Baba's blessing is divine and welfare is a
mundane term.

Note 2: Sometimes Baba gives His blessing saying Kalya'n'amastu, sometimes
Baba begins His blessing with Hita', and sometimes with Ks'ema', but in
each case the editors of our AMPS books incorrectly put "Let there be welfare".

Hence the editors of the various books are responsible for such blunders.
It is our dharmic duty that such errors should be corrected according to Baba's
approach.

Note 3: Specifically in AV-34, p.37 the mistake appears in the book like
this:

           "Kalya'n'amastu [Let there be welfare]"

So this is a wrong and misguided translation that the editors did.

Baba

== "MASTER GLOSSARY" BLUNDER: THE TERM ACARYA ==

Namaskar,
In our ongoing investigation of the "Master Glossary" from the "The Electronic Edition (English) of the Works of P.R. Sarkar" (version 7.5), we examine the term: acarya.

                                                 BABA'S DEFINITION:

                                   ACARYAS TEACH BY THEIR CONDUCT

As we all know, Baba has given a very clear and pointed definition of the term acarya.

Baba says, "'Acárańát pát́hayati yah sah ácáryah – “One who teaches through one’s conduct is an ácárya.” If you cannot learn anything from the conduct and behaviour of a certain person, why should you accept that person as an ácárya/á?" (Ananda Vacanamrtam, part 23, "Silent Action)

Thus, by His above definition, it is very clear that conduct is an integral aspect of being an acarya. Indeed, if one's conduct is improper, they are not an acarya.

Here below Baba emphasizes this very same notion that one's conduct - i.e. speech and deeds - is the central component of acarya life.

Baba says, "An ácárya or ácáryá should always instruct by his or her exemplary actions and words." (Ananda Vacanamrtam, part 31)

And in His next guideline, because conduct is the main theme of being an acarya, Baba once again stress this point.

Baba says, "I have already explained in the definition of ácárya, Acárańát páthayati yah sah ácáryah – “One who teaches through one’s conduct is an ácárya.” If one’s conduct is not exemplary, he is not an ácárya/á." (Ananda Vacanamrtam, part 23, "Silent Action)

So by all of the above it is quite clear that according to Baba, an acarya is one who teaches by their conduct and if one's actions are not proper then they are not an acarya. It is a very straightforward definition.

MORE OF BABA'S TEACHINGS ON ACARYA

Baba furthermore states that in addition to maintaining an exemplary code of conduct, our acaryas should possess the following qualities.

Baba says, "Only those persons who are sincere, spirited and endowed with sharp intellect, and who understand and can make others understand the philosophy, will be considered eligible to become a´ca´rya/a´s." (Caryacarya, part 1, "Táttvika, Ácárya/á, and Purodhá")

Here below in this following descriptive explanation of an acarya, Baba emphasizes that one's dealing and conduct must be proper in order to be an acarya.

Baba says, "Those who have the responsibility to show the path to others should be of superlative character with the most refined conduct. They and their followers must move constantly towards all-round development and shreya [ultimate spiritual attainment]. Persons who teach such well-regulated behaviour to others by their own conduct are called ácáryas." (Ananda Vacanamrtam, part 31)

All in all, Baba's definition of an acarya is very clear: The main thing is exemplary conduct based on AM ideals.

Indeed, Baba's mandate is quite revolutionary and drastically different from the trends in other arenas of contemporary life.

                                           TODAY'S SOCIETAL TRENDS

In the so-called modern civilization, especially in the west, conduct has little or no meaning.
Dancers, singers, writers, politicians, movie stars, businessmen and athletes are often plagued by crude, if not lewd, behaviour; but since they say the right things, speak "high" words, and pledge promises etc, the common people have no objections. It is all fine and well. That is way things happen today in the general society.

So when we see that good conduct is distinctly lacking in the general society, that is why we should be even more vigilant to highlight the proper definition of what an acarya is. Otherwise it looks like we too are ignoring this critical aspect of life: conduct.

Hence any true definition of an acarya must include Baba's Sanskrit shloka, or at the very least reflect its meaning.

                                       Acárańát páthayati yah sah ácáryah

In AM, conduct is everything - especially for our acaryas. On this point, Baba does not accept any compromise. The conduct of an acarya must be sterling - period. In countless reporting sessions, Baba expressed this very same ideal and always pointed out and corrected one's defects and character flaws - especially those of our acaryas.

                                  WHAT THE "MASTER GLOSSARY" SAYS

Keeping all of the above in mind, it is unfortunate that in the "Master Glossary" from the electronic edition of Baba's books, the definition of acarya is missing this all-important aspect of conduct.

Here is how the term acarya is defined in the so-called Master Glossary:

"Acarya: Spiritual teacher qualified to teach all lessons of meditation."

("Master Glossary" from the "The Electronic Edition (English) of the Works of P.R. Sarkar" - version 7.5)

Thus in the above definition the publishers totally omitted the very essence, i.e. conduct. There is no mention of this in the above noted definition.

Yet the reality is that if one teaches "all lessons of meditation" but their conduct is not good then they are not an acarya according to Baba. So the definition given in the "Master Glossary" is wrong, or at the very least misleading and incomplete.

                                                           SUMMARY

The matter is very clear. Baba says that a key defining element of being an acarya is possessing proper conduct. That is Baba's definition of acarya. So when that element is totally absent from the definition in the "Master Glossary", that is cause for concern. Then new readers will get the wrong idea and so many others will be misled. And still another segment of the society will be left unimpressed whereas they would have been duly impressed if they knew our Wt cadre is defined by their sterling conduct.

The main problem is that the "Master Glossary" fails to properly express Baba's real definition of acarya. For this reason this letter has been written. Because when our own publishers are unable to provide a proper definition of our AM terms, then how are non-margiis going to learn about AM ideology.

Namaskar,
Jawaharlal

Ananda Marga: Plight of WT Trainees (Part 2)

Subject: Ananda Marga: Plight of WT Trainees (Part 2)

Baba

"A'ma're dekhe calecho prabhu more pu'n'ya phale..." (PS 4477)

Purport:

Baba, because of the virtue of having Your grace, I can feel that You are so close and that You are looking at me all the time. Baba, You are with me each and every moment, in the brilliant effulgence and in the cimmerian darkness-- constantly, all the 24hrs. In my good days and bad days always You are and will remain along with me. Baba, You are so gracious.

Baba, when I am surrounded by the fog of hopelessness and despair, & when my life becomes burdened, then it is very difficult for me to move ahead-- all my inspiration is lost. And when I cry in pain and the tears are rolling down my cheeks like a river, and when I am drowned in pessimism, then I think that this life is useless and that this whole world is poisonous. In that case I feel it is better just to die. When I am in such a crisis, then with a very pleasant and sonorous voice, Someone appears in my mental abode and in a very sweet & intimate way He whispers, 'Do not worry, I love you'.

Baba, the effulgence of Your divine love never gets extinguished; Your love is eternal and never fades or ends. In this mundane world, everything comes and goes. Baba only You are eternal and infinite. You are the sweetest Entity. You are that force that never stops. You are that magnificent bliss that never diminishes-- always that bliss is growing and growing. Baba, You are my everything: The be-all and end-all of the life. By Your grace I am under Your shelter. Baba, in the deep core of my heart the only request I have is that: Please do not forget that I am sheltering myself in You, at Your lotus feet.

Baba, by Your infinite grace-compassion You are remaining by my side always...

== ANANDA MARGA: PLIGHT OF WT TRAINEES ==

~ AN OPEN LETTER TO GTS & CTS ~

~ PART 2 ~

Namaskar,
This is the second part of our investigative report on the conditions of our trainees at the Varanasi WT training centre.

As you may recall the first letter detailed how trainees were given old, dirty clothes to wear and deprived of even the most basic foods. Plus other issues were raised including the very dramatic story of dharma samiiska. A link to the first letter is noted below.

Here in this second letter further matters are explored.

AGE OF IDEALISM

We must remember that our trainees are youths - mostly teenagers - and they arrive at our doorstep with tremendous idealism. They want to do something to change the world and serve Baba. They have a mind, a heart and they have feelings. They know a little about Ananda Marga yet have a strong desire to know more. That is why they have come - that is why they have chosen to dedicate their life. They have come in search of living for a high ideal.

NOT EVEN ALLOWED TO TALK

Of course it is our duty to create a Training Centre that nurtures their inherent desire to lead a spiritual life and serve humanity. But our TC is operating in a different manner.

At our Varanasi WT Training Centre, our trainees are malnourished. They get 1/2 the calories needed to maintain a healthy human body. They growing bodies and minds are deprived of the food needed to grow. Just they are left to suffer and waste away. Yet, side by side, these same trainees see how the Trainer Dada is eating like a king.

By Baba's grace our trainees have great dedication for our AM ideals and love for Parama Purusa. For this reason they do not run away.

Indeed they are cognizant that Baba's teachings of neo-humanism and Prout hold immense beauty and hope for the society. Our trainees are attracted by the ideals of a single human family. That is why they debate these points among themselves. One trainee was telling that Baba's teachings are for others, but not for those in AM. Then other trainees retorted that if we ourselves are not practicing these ideals then how can we teach them to others. This type of back and forth discussion is common at TC. When the trainer Dada hears this he feels irritated and does not wish for the trainees to discuss such matters and / or the irregularities at TC.

Verily, the Trainer Dada does not like that his trainees should reflect openly on such topics. Many say that the Trainer Dada is himself defensive about the the double standard set between the himself and the trainees. So the Trainer Dada does not want them talking about our AM way of life lest they question about all the injustices and inadequacies going on in TC. He wants that they should keep mum on all these topics.

For their part, the trainees are not complaining, merely they are immensely interested in and curious about Baba's divine teachings. But the trainer Dada is not apt to let them grow or discuss in this way.

That is why for the last few months, the trainer Dada has imposed a curfew: No talking on any point at all. If any trainee wishes to express any idea then it must be conveyed in writing only. One may not talk on any topic. When taking a collective meal, if a trainee wishes to have some salt on their food then they have to write that down on a piece of paper and hand that to the trainee who is near the salt. That is the extreme imposition going on at TC these days. The trainees are not allowed to talk amongst themselves - period. They must bear their mistreatment in silence.

Such harsh rules do not exist in any civilised country or modern society. There is no way to justify the imposed silence order by the trainer Dada.

Here it should be clarified that the ruthless and repressive policy of TC cannot be classified as maonbrata (vow of silence). We must know that maonbrata is a self-imposed discipline not to talk - it comes from within and is not imposed by others. Plus maonbrata is for limited time - it is not meant as a permanent way of living. Hence what is going on at TC is a complete injustice. It is just the case of a repressive regime wherein the trainees are forced into silence in order to keep their mouths shut about their miserable living conditions.

Only in Nazi concentration camps or in Communist work prisons would such harsh rules be imposed. So it is quite ironic that this is happening in our own WT training centre - a place that is supposed to be the embodiment of neo-humanism, yet instead emulates the ways of dark, totalitarian regimes.

WHERE MONEY GOES - WHAT HAPPENS TO MARGII CONTRIBUTIONS

When it was asked why trainees are not given proper food, he replied that he was not getting sufficient financial contributions from margiis. He added that if donations were good, then certainly the trainees would be properly feed.

However, later on I found that this is not true as most of the money that comes in goes to the upper / WT kitchen. That means Dadaji and some visiting avadhutas are eating up all the donations on rich, tasty food for themselves. Hence just the bare minimum is left for feeding the full team of trainees.

Even when a margii visits and wishes to arrange a nice meal or donate food for everyone in TC, that plan is rejected by CTS (i.e. Trainer Dada) and in turn he controls that money and spends very little on food for the trainees. This also I came to know.

Plus, in order to save his post, the Trainer Dada diverts money towards Rudrananda.

STYLE OF AM EDUCATION AT TC

Let's again stand back and ask ourselves why such trainees felt inspired to attend TC. It is very easy to understand that all these youths reached from around India to get training and learn about AM philosophy: Both its theoretical and practical aspects.

But what is the reality that is going on?

One particular aspect they have learned first-hand is: How exploitation occurs when those at the top do not view others as their family members. This they have learned first-hand while in TC.

With regards to their theoretical learning, there is virtually no teaching going on at all.

The trainer Dada is busy all day with his school kids. From early in the morning to evening time he is busy at his school in order to make money. He does not like to hire teachers as that would be an added expense.

But the truth is that our Trainer Dada should supervise the school on the greater level and let hired teachers run the daily operations of school. In addition, the trainees should be taught how to supervise a school. That is why Baba has given such a system.

Unfortunately the trainer Dada just drowns himself in the mundane dealings of the school and totally overlooks his duties at WT Trainer. All because he is more concerned with making money at the school. So when he returns back to the TC in the late evening, he is tired and he reads the newspaper and plays computer games. That is how the days pass. There is no time to teach anything to the trainees. Yet they yearn to learn about Ananda Marga.

We should remember that the WT Trainer Dada is a trainer first and a school principal second - not vice-versa. His title is WT trainer. Yet this role he mostly overlooks.

So after three years in TC, it is sadly apparent what our new brahmacariis have learned about AM. Just ask such new wts a question and see what they say.

For instance, ask them to explain about brahmacakra, kosa, loka, three causes of sin - all these basic points. They will not know the answers. Believe it or not, some passed and do not even know how to dance kaoshikii and tandava, yama and niyama, 16 Pts etc.

Please do not think that I am blaming our trainees; they are A-grade. All blame
goes to those in-charges who do not feed them or teach them. They neither teach the trainees by their conduct nor in the classroom. No education is imparted whatsoever.

Instead those in-charges impose all kinds of dogmas and complexes. Such bosses eat while their trainees starve.

This cycle of exploitation goes on and on.

Tomorrow these trainees will become brahmacaryiis and then become avadhutas. Unfortunately, many of them will pursue these exploitative methods with their
juniors. This is vicious cycle that is being perpetuated.

It is no different from the mother-in-law who beats her daughter-in-law. One day that daughter-in-law does the same thing.

The situation is so extreme one trainee became mad and was kicked out from TC and laokika parents were searching for him. for all we know he may be begging in Varanasi or has been placed in some lunatic asylum.

THE REALITY STARING US IN THE FACE

Here is one hard fact we all must face. These days the number of aged Wts is much more than the number of incoming Wts. Should this trend continue then we will have a severe crisis and shortage of wts in AM. At present more than 50% of our workers are 50+ yrs of age. No one likes to think like this, but these wts are not going to live forever.

We should all take it upon ourselves to consider this situation: Ineveitable shortage of workers. Any organisation suffering from this type of trend will become extinct in a short time. This was the recent trend of Christianity in Europe and now today there are thousands of churches that are essentially vacant. The church has basically given up in various European countries.

Here the point is that our WT training centre has a big role to maintain and protect those who come to train. But that is not happening. Our level of retention is very low. If 100 reach Training Centre then from the time of their arrival to the time they have graduated and worked in the field for one year, then only 5 remain as workers. That means over the course of training and within the first 12 months of field work, we are losing 95% of those who enter TC. That is a very dramatic figure. No organisation can survive with such a low rate of retention.

Whereas if our trainees and new workers are instilled with a deep sense of family feeling and supported by their seniors, then one can weather all kinds of problems etc. Then our retention rate will be much, much higher.

Unfortunately when a family feeling is not cultivated and trainees are not encouraged in sadhana or given the opportunity to garner a deep spiritual base, then so many young trainees and wts are lost - they just leave entirely. Without the requisite spiritual base and guidance, their chance of gaining success as a Wt is very low. So we cannot blame them as individuals. Only we must reassess what is going on in out Training Centre(s).

Of course I have great regard for our trainer Dada; he is a learned person. Dadaji has extraordinary qualities but he mostly uses them for Oriya trainees, not others. If that same ethic was applied to all, then things would be much different. Dadaji must sacrifice and pour his heart for all trainees, not just for those who hail from Oriya. Then so many good things will result.

THIS IS WHAT IS REALLY HAPPENING

All this is not a fairy tale. This is the unfortunate scene happening in Varanasi TC. If you have real interest to know more, talk to any trainee who just came from TC or do your homework of investigative reporting.

Pushing aside others plight by claiming their ordeals as mere hearsay is heartless and not the way of any true sadhaka. We have to have sympathy for those suffering and we must have the courage to step forward and put a stop to their misery. Things must be set right.

BABA'S BLESSING

By Baba's grace He has given the perfect remedy for addressing the problems going on in the Varanasi Training Centre.

Baba says, "The incapability to recognize the requirements of others because of insensitiveness is a psychic disease. Those afflicted with this disease are also members of the vast human family; they are also our brothers and sisters. So, either by making humanitarian appeals or by creating circumstantial pressure, arrangements will have to be made to cure them of their ailment." (Problems of the Day, #4)

Namaskar,
Nagendra

Note 2: OTHER REPORTS ABOUT WT TRAINING CENTRE

******************************************
Sarva'unga'sana and Vipariitakarani Mudra

"Question: What is the difference between sarva'unga'sana and vipariitakarani mudra?"

"Answer: In sarva'unga'sana we have to fix the mind at the point of the toes, whereas in vipariitakarani mudra we have to fix the citta or mind stuff at the tip of the nose or at the navel point." (YP, p.117-18)

Note: Sarva'unga'sana and vipariitakarani are very similar-- they are almost the same thing. Just a few little differences are there:

(1) In sarva'unga'sana the mind and eyes are fixed on the center point between the two big toes while in vipariitakarani mudra the mind focuses on the navel or the tip of the nose.

(2) When the body is very straight and it does not have to exert a continuous effort to maintain that position-- rather it is easy and comfortable to hold that posture-- then it is sarva'unga'sana. Whereas mudras, such as vipariitakarani mudra, demand a constant and ongoing effort to maintain the posture. Asanas, on the other hand require a little effort to enter into the position and thereafter it is comfortable and easy to maintain.

(3) In sarva'unga'sana and vipariitakarani mudra, although the postures look the same but the effort exerted and way of approach are a little different as explained earlier. And in addition they effect the body in different ways. Sarva'unga'sana affects the glands & cakras, and the secretion of the hormone; while mudras give strength to the muscles and nevers. These ideas have been given by Baba in His various discourses.

(4) In WT reporting sessions, Baba used to sometimes give atonement by demanding that some or all do vipariitakaranai for a long time. Sometimes for 1/2 hr, 1 hour, 2 hrs, at a stretch. Naturally that qas quite enjoyable for everyone to do. And the underlying reason behind this was that the majority of WT had acidity problems and this Vipariitakarani mudra was the cure. So in the name of doing atonement it was actually Baba's blessing.
