Namaskar,
We all know that we need to "jumpstart" our AMPS in order to make it
dynamic and vibrant once again.

However, one should not think that this has never happened before. In
the past also our organisation experienced a distinct lull, if not a
full-blown crisis, and by His grace we did bounce back with tremendous
momentum. So the situation we find ourselves in today is not new - there
is a precedent.

This below Baba story offers the perfect strategy for transforming our
AMPS into a sterling, bustling society once again.

                             BABA STORY:

            "NEWSLETTERS ARE MY FOOD"

During Emergency, when Baba was in jail, then the mood of our Marga was
a bit sullen. There were court cases, controversies, tales of scandal,
and quite a bit of intrigue. Devotionally margiis were managing alright,
by His grace, but in the social sphere things were a bit gloomy. People
were hesitant to do pracara or go out in public and talk about Ananda
Marga. Our AM train was moving slowly.

Baba, being the Parama Purusa incarnate, knew the perfect remedy.

While fasting in jail, Baba forcefully declared, "I need newsletters,
that will be my food."

Baba's dynamic proclamation set the wheels of our Marga in motion.
Immediately, word spread how Baba wanted to hear news about what was
happening in the Marga around the globe and that this would be His food.

Of course, in His mind's eye, Baba was intuitively aware about each and
every thought, word and deed so His declaration for newsletters was more
of strategy for rejuvenating the Marga. And indeed how well it worked.


                     VERY POSITIVE EFFECT

The effect of Baba's call was very dramatic. Ananda Margiis all over
jumped into action.

Each district and locale realised that they needed to create a
newsletter. And to write a newsletter they needed something to write
about. In order to have something to write about they needed to do
something. This was the way it worked.

So margiis began vigorously involving themselves in all kinds of social
service projects and good deeds. Once done, then they could and would
write and print that news and mail it to Baba and that would be His
food. Everyone became quite active; all were feeling blissful.

Plus, everyone was vigilant to write news that was accurate and true.
Nobody wanted to give Baba bad food and we all knew that He knew what
was true or not. So the social service endeavors were done with full
feeling and accurately reported.

Then the various units thought that since we are printing news for Baba,
why not print more copies and send it to other units and regions as
well. This created a whole network of newsletters. No longer were
various margiis or units sitting alone in isolation worried about the
fate of AM. Now the scene was abuzz with news coming in all kinds of
directions. Margiis were more active than ever: Schools, pracara, talks,
mass feeding, clothes distribution, university seminars, and so much
more. And when one unit would read about what another was doing, then
they would implement that program in their area as well. Such
newsletters had a wonderful domino effect.

By all this activity our Marga was growing by leaps and bounds and the
sullen skies in AM cleared and everyone had a bright, positive vision
for moving ahead, despite the difficulties.

Then, when Baba was finally cleared of all charges and released from
prison,  our Marga society was in full-swing. It was a driving force.
This was all His grace and His divine planning.

Baba understood perfectly that in order to turn things in the right
direction there needed to be dynamism in the social sphere. And
newsletters were the perfect way to get things going. Then people would
feel that they are part of some larger movement. This made everyone feel
connected, engaged, and hopeful.

What worked so beautifully those days will have an equally beneficial
effect today.


                   GREAT WAY TO OVERCOME GROUPISM

Now when the mood is a bit down in AMPS due to rampant groupism, there
are various calls for how to bring things back to life. Some are making
organisational handbooks, some are attempting peace meetings, some are
trying to merge the groups, and some are just working independently.

Whatever may be, we should certainly aim for Baba's approach: newsletters.


                  "BUT WE ALREADY HAVE NEWSLETTERS"

Some may naively declare, "But we already have newsletters - I get lots
of emails."

In truth however, we do not have lots of newsletters. There is not a
single organisationally sanctioned newsletter. Only the various groupist
forces are sending out their own biased views and news - most of which
is either tainted by group interest or totally false.

A newsletter - whether it be electronic or otherwise - should be true,
rational and totally unbiased. Yet today, everything coming out of this
or that organisational channel is just one concocted groupist portrayal.
If their group is involved then the event is reported like gold and if
their group is not involved then it is reported like feces. Everything
is drawn along party lines.

Actually this type of thing has been going on since 1990, in one form or
another. So much false news has been reported that people have lost
interest in these reports. And they have lost interest in reporting what
is going on in their area.

This has all had an extremely detrimental effect.

Now then is the time to turn all this around. We should actively support
and adhere to Baba's newsletter strategy.


            WHAT TYPES OF NEWS SHOULD BE CIRCULATED

The first question might be: What type of things are newsworthy. And the
answer is anything that tightens the bonds within our Marga.

That means things like births, baby-naming ceremonies, akhanda kiirtan,
social service, developments in schools, pracar, deaths, retreats - each
and everything can be reported. And there should be organisationally
sanctioned channels, totally free of group interest.

By sharing all these types of news in a fair and truthful manner - on
the regional, sectorial, and global level - then our whole Marga family
will be benefited.

And while this is Baba's distinct approach, it should not be overlooked
that many organisations and movements do like this as well.


                   MANY ORGANISATIONS DO LIKE THIS

Every organisation hoping to succeed on this earth keeps their internal
structure strong by keeping their members "in the know" and inspired.
Whether the organisation be Greenpeace, Amnesty International, or any
other, newsletters, grass-roots sharing, and open and truthful lines of
communication are a must. They all do it.


                      AM WILL ONCE AGAIN BECOME

                 A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH

Now there may be some news clippings moving around our AM society here
and there. But that is not enough, especially when the crude hand of
groupist networks are on the rise.

By implementing Baba's system of oranisationally sanctioned newsletters
- employing a multi-tier approach - covering local and global events,
all will feel more connected and inspired. It will encourage others to
implement the ways of AM into their own lives and that of their community.

Living alone or in isolation is not at all good. We are social beings.
Having healthy, productive, open newsletters will improve the overall
climate and psychology of the Marga. We will no longer feel like we are
sitting in one seething groupist volcano.

Instead we will realise how many like-minded sadhakas are in our grand
AM family. By Baba's grace He has brought us together - and with good
reason: To learn and grow with one another as we embark on leading a
life dedicated to Him and serving humanity.

With these newsletters, all will feel closer and part of some greater
whole. No doubt on the spiritual level we all feel linked with Baba by
His grace. But that social connection is very important for building a
strong, cohesive movement. That will give us force.

So at the earliest this program should go on - in all units and in all
areas. One newsletter will lead to the next and inspire everyone to move
ahead. It will create boundless energy and much zeal.


                          BABA'S BLESSING

By Baba's grace He has given us a great example to live by. Whatever the
situation, Baba has already provided us with the pathway to move ahead.
Now when we are drowned in the dogma of groupism, one excellent way to
move forward and bring a new charge in the Marga is by creating
newsletters.  Baba graciously declared this to be His food and today
such newsletters will be the staple for creating a new AMPS family,
unshackled by groupism and factional interest.

Baba says, "When people hesitate and doubt whether they can accomplish
something, and if they start to work in that hesitant frame of mind,
they can never accomplish that task. But if they plunge into action
thinking of their goal with courage, imbued with spiritual inspiration,
they are sure to be crowned with success. No action is greater than the
human capacity to perform it. Of all the manifold entities in this
expressed world, human beings are the most powerful." (AMIWL-11)

                         Historical Fact

Baba says, "In the Pharsi language the sweet fruit known as mango is
called ta'mar. But in the early days the people in Iran did not know
what a mango looked like, nor did they know how it tasted. Because they
had only heard about it from travellers passing through. So the first
time a sour type of fruit from India reached Iran the local Pharsi
speaking people mistakenly thought it was a mango. Consequently they
started calling it 'ta'mar-e-hind', meaning 'Mango from India. In
Pharsi, "Ta'mar" means 'mango'; "e" means 'of'; "Hind" means 'India'.
Thus, Ta'mar-e-hind. And later when the Britishers saw those Iranians
calling those sour fruits 'ta'mar-e-hind', then the Britishers adopted
their own English pronunciation and started calling it "tamarind". So
this is how the sour fruit tamarind came to be called in the English

Why are you building castles in quicksand. Have you never examined the
matter carefully. That structure is shaking profusely because of the
soft foundation. Since ages you have been wasting your time in
constructing that castle on quicksand. You have invested huge energy
along with blood, sweat & your own hard labour to build it. All the
while you were indulging in your own dreamland-- foolishly thinking that
this "thing" will give you permanent satiation. You were never ready to
admit that this is temporary and ephemeral...

Note: In the above song quicksand means materialism and castle means
building one's life.


      == GRADUALLY ALL COUNTRIES WILL BE IN JAIL ==

Security checkpoints, I.D. requests, curfews in cities, bodyguards,
metal detectors in schools, police barricades...

Terrorist attacks, pirate ships, car bombs, explosions in the market,
hotels under siege, open gunfire at crowds...

Luxury mansions, corporate profits, exploitation of resources, 1st World
vs 3rd World, starving villagers, disease-plagued communities, 1
dollar-a-day sweat-house factories...

So long as this grossly materialistic vaeshyan era is in vogue, the more
our global family will be held in check, until finally literally
everyone will be living in jail, not even able to go out to buy food or
get a drink of water without being frisked, questioned, ID checked, and
watched.


                     MATERIALISM BRINGS FEAR

There are finite, limited resources on this earth. And capitalists are
gobbling them all up. Whether it be oil, bananas, land, diamonds, coal,
timber, or whatever, capitalist enterprises are fast identifying and
swallowing up every perceivable resource-- whether that resource exists
in their own backyard or not.

We are fast reaching that point where 99% of the world's resources are
owned by 0.1% of the world's people. With each and every passing day, we
move closer and closer to strangling the common citizens for the last
bit of wealth on this planet.

This is what is happening in this abhorrently materialistic era where
humanity's infinite longing is sidetracked into the pitfalls of limited
worldly wealth.

Baba says, "Human beings have unquenchable, infinite physical longings
and out of these physical longings capitalism came into existence."

Baba says, "Capitalism must be forced to abandon its ferocious hunger by
taking strong measures." (POD #2)

So when a few are gobbling up all the resources and wealth to satisfy
their misguided longing for material gain...

...In that case, there is bound to be a backlash. There is bound to be a
reaction. That is why those top capitalists are ever more fearful about
such a retaliation and increase security in every conceivable corner of
social life.

The United States employs hundreds of thousands in their intelligence
operations. Because they know well that when the US has taken all the
world's resources then other people are not going to be happy about it
and will retaliate, sooner or later. We have now reached that point in
human history.


                       CAMPING TRIP EXAMPLE

Today's global climate can be likened to one camping trip where a small
group of people embark on an outing to a small place where there are
limited resources. Then if one or two persons were to quickly hoard all
the resources on that island or hilltop, and the rest of the people had
little or no means to live, then naturally those common campers would
strike back at those who had snatched up all the resources. This is
human nature. Even people who would not normally fight or seek revenge
will rise up if a few are stealing all the wealth and forcing the rest
to live as paupers.


             TERRORISTS ARE NOT THE ROOT CAUSE

So while terrorism cannot be espoused in any way, shape, or form, it
would also be foolish to deny the fact that today's global terrorism was
born more out of capitalist exploitation than by Muslim extremism.

No doubt the Muslim religion is dogmatic and misguided in its ways, but
the current terrorist attacks did not suddenly appear out of thin air.
They are a response to a certain set of conditions: Capitalists stealing
all the world's wealth and then legalising that process.

Thus whether they be pirates from Somalia, car bombers from Pakistan, or
hijackers from Egypt, all such terrorist attacks are a secondary
problem. The main cause is extreme capitalism where all the wealth has
been sucked up by a few. And then to retain that wealth, millions and
billions are spent on security, surveillance, and the like.

In which case, everyday citizens are forced to both (a) live in the
danger of a terrorist attack at any moment, as well as (b) be looked
upon as suspects by those greedy, fearful capitalists.

Before the rise of extreme capitalism, political leaders would casually
roam the streets without any fear or problem. But now even low-grade
politicians move around with a small army of security guards. The ripple
effect of that fear is that everyday citizens must show their ID card at
every street corner - or nearabouts.


        YOUTH FEEL THEY HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE

When certain countries have snagged all the wealth-- and it is visible
for all to see on the internet-- then innocent youth in far distant
lands take a vow. They think, 'Why should I live surrounded by flies in
these slums when those people from afar have stolen our resources and
exploited our people for labor'. When such youths realise that despite
their best efforts they will never be able to become part of the
well-to-do, they reason that they have nothing to lose.

In that way, they join street gangs, or get involved in guerrilla
warfare, or sign-up in a terrorist training camp. They think this is the
only way for me to get ahead, otherwise those capitalists will just suck
me dry, just like they did to the rest of the people in my community or
country.

With this 'nothing-to-lose' attitude, youths take to the streets, and
today we are seeing the results.


                           BABA'S BLESSING

So long as capitalism is the leading system, then people's minds will be
diverted to material gain and exploitation will be the theme of the day.
A few will have everything and the rest will have next to nothing. That
is the capitalist dream. To date, they have gotten success. And their
success has given birth to terrorism and this age where our airports and
streets are turning into maximum security prisons. This problem will
only increase with the continued rise of capitalism. By Baba's grace we
must usher in that era of spirituality and Prout and rid the world of
the noose of capitalism.

Baba says, "These capitalists are the unworthy sons and daughters of the
Cosmic Father because they go against the principle of cosmic
inheritance. They should be cured of their ailments. To fight capitalism
is therefore within your goal." ('Talks on Prout')

Baba says, "We have to divert physical longings to psychic and spiritual longings to
avoid a fratricidal war, and thereby safeguard human rights." (PNS-15)

               == FARCE OF FREEDOM ==

We all know that democracy is not optimal, but until something better
comes along-- that is, until Proutistic society is formed-- the
democratic system stands as the best option thus far. This fact every
A'nanda Ma'rgii knows.

Nowadays in the present world there is one ruling democracy that claims
itself as the top, above all others. Even with their recent economic fallout,
this land thinks of itself as the most just and the embodiment human welfare.

Hence not only do they think democracy is the best system of all time,
but they also think that theirs is the greatest representation of a
democratic state.

In an attempt to put things into perspective, let us take a look and see
how far their claims are correct, or not.


                    ARROGANCE OF THE US

On many points the USA thinks itself to be better than other nations.
From economics to Hollywood, and from sports to medicine, the US thinks
itself to be far higher than others.

But there is one sphere of life in which the USA especially claims
itself to be head and shoulders above the rest-- towering high, high
above. Namely, the US considers itself to be the ultimate democracy, or
the 'Father of Modern Democracy'. With this egoistic concept in mind,
they brag that in their land the great principles of democracy shine
through in a unique way. This is the height of their audacity.

Note: Here the "they" & "their" refer not to the common people &
certainly not to the margiis but to those tall-talking US politicians
and political animals-- and anyone else who is riding their "high horse"
about the so-called greatness of US democracy.


                 OTHERS INTIMIDATED (USUALLY)

And often is the case, that other countries & peoples cower down in
front of the "mighty" US, thinking themselves to be inferior. Although
this has become less of late - still it is a major trend. While
there are still others who silently or noisily oppose. But even then,
the common feeling around the globe is that on the point of democratic
freedom, the US is the golden land. Because this is what the US
propagates and this is what the other countries are led to believe.

Hence, side by side, with unflinching pride, the US tries to impose its
system on all other countries-- as if their democratic way is the best &
unbeatable.


                 US DEMOCRACY: NOT UP TO PAR

But upon closer examination on any number of points & issues the US
approach to democracy is way off the mark.

For example if anyone commits a crime in the US-- even a more or less
harmless crime where they made a mistake but did not necessarily hurt
anyone else-- then that person automatically becomes scarred and even
stigmatized for life.

Even after completing the prescribed atonement and allotted punishment
for that crime, still that dark mark gets carried with them year after
year-- all the way up to their death.

Of course rich persons or politically connected individuals who have no
feeling of repentance for their wrongdoing often can "buy" their back
their freedom. So this stands as yet another blatant loophole of US
democracy. That is another scenario.

But here the point is that in that "great democratic land" of the USA
where everyone is supposed to get social and economic justice, a
rectified person cannot even come close re-entering society. They cannot
get a proper job nor become a trusted member of society. Because their
record has become permanently stained. So living a normal humane life is
basically out of their reach. As they are denied so many basic rights
and opportunities. This is the common trial for those outcasted persons:
They are forever looked upon as being criminals.

Under such conditions, when their own country has turned their back on
them and they have no where else to go, then those struggling souls
inevitably then revert back to their life of crime. This is the regular
injustice that goes on night and day in the US. Where having been
deprived of good opportunities, those ex-cons lose hope and jump back
into their old habits just so they can survive. And in that way, with no
other direction to turn, they fall again in their downward spiral.

Hence there is a flagrant duplicity in US democratic life. Because
instead of being a land for all people, the "powers-that-be" that run
this democracy mercilessly turn their backs on those who erred in the
past. Such persons are deprived of the  little help & encouragement they
need. This is the inhumane way in which the US democracy works inside
its borders.

What hell they have done in Iraq, Afghanistan, and countless other
places in the name of promoting democracy-- that everyone already knows.
Yet within the US borders this democracy is also just a namesake. That
is the point of this letter.

In contrast many other countries around the globe do a wonderful job of
rehabilitating ex-cons and criminals. Those who have truly rectified
their behaviour really do get a proper opportunity to re-enter mainline
society and become contributing members.

But in the so-called great democracy of the US, this is rarely ever the
case. Rather those past criminals are left to sink on their own.


                    BABA'S WARNING

Here below Baba warns us about such awful outcomes where people become
crushed by crude systems like US democracy.

Baba says, "Having been subjected to much social injustice and
criticism, some people think, 'Now that I have stepped onto the path of
vice, now that I have fallen down, I will not stop until I reach the
deepest hell'." (AV-7)

So in His above teaching, Baba shows how even well-intentioned people
lose all hope and revert back to their "old ways" when they do not get
proper scope to become participating members of the society.

Hence in their anti-humanistic manner, the US recklessly pushes so many
back onto the path of crime and misfortune-- until they reach the
deepest depths.


                    THE WAY IT SHOULD BE DONE

                 BABA'S NEO-HUMANISTIC APPROACH
In our Marga, Baba guides us to take a totally different approach-- one
that is reflective of neo-humanism and encourages the positive
development of the individual-- no matter who they are.

Baba says, "Social pressure does not mean declaring anyone an outcast or
ostracizing anyone or stopping the supply of anyone's basic needs. This
is not proper social pressure; rather it is a useless approach, having
no positive effect on people. On the contrary, it merely strengthens the
determination of the sinner to sin. What is proper social pressure? It
is to find the good side, the noble aspects, of a person's character,
and help bring about a change in his life." (NHNS-1, p.20)

So Baba's guideline is that we should always seek out the bright spots
of any individual and help them to cultivate those qualities more and
more. By this way even depraved persons can become totally transformed.
This is the neo-humanistic way of AM.

In contrast the US democratic system pushes people in the opposite
direction by permanently labeling them as being "unfit" for the society.
And that produces a horrible result-- both for the individual and the
society.

Whereas Baba's neo-humanistic perspective serves to uplift the people
whereby they can become not just normal citizens but even wonderful
assets of the society.


                       MOVING TOGETHER

The main point being that in Baba's holistic approach all get the scope
to move ahead. None are left behind. Everyone remains part of the
collective flow.

                  'Samanam ejati iti sama'jah'

Baba says, "'Moving together' means that all portions of society, all
portions of the collective body, should have the spirit to move ahead."
(AV-3)

Thus Baba's ideal is to always encourage and help one and all to partake
in the collective flow whereby all can realise their potential.

And while Prout has yet to be established in any country, there are a
variety of nations which do quite good work of rectifying persons who
committed a wrong and help them to get back on their feet and advance.
So this is quite admirable.

Far below that is the US approach which gives up on its prisoners and
wrongdoers and permanently marks their fate keeps them on the fringe and
ostracized. And on so many other point US democracy utterly fails to
live up to its name.


                        BABA'S BLESSING
By His infinite grace & compassion Baba guides us to help everyone to
continually grow & develop.

Baba says, "Encourage everyone to build their career in a nice way. Let
none get the opportunity to think that their life has become useless."
(Ananda Vanii #19)

Note 1:         AM JUSTICE FAR SURPASSES US DEMOCRACY

By Baba's below guideline anyone can see how benevolent and rational our
AM system of justice is.

Baba says, "In our A'nanda Ma'rga capital punishment, whether social or
physical, is not permitted anywhere. The only punishment in our Ma'rga
is disallowing offenders from taking part in social functions for a
fixed period. After the period is over the person starts taking in all
social functions as usual." (PNS-3, p.45)

So everyone gets scope to re-enter society and become full-fledged
participants once they have undergone their punishment and rectified
themselves. But in the beleaguered and dusty ways of US democracy,
countless people are left to rot and are pushed back onto the path of
destruction. All because they are not given a chance nor encouraged to
show their goodness.

                          Good Teaching

Baba says, "Those who wrongly worship Parama Purus'a in the form of
clay, iron, or other material substances, are ultimately transformed in
Prakrtiliina*. And those who run around externally in hopes of finding
Parama Purusa outside, they also be come Prakrtiliina." (15 May 1982,
Hindi Section)
