Longevity: Curse or Boon

Baba

== LONGEVITY: CURSE OR BOON ==

Namaskar,
Around the globe it is the commonly held view that a successful life is a
long life. That is, people generally equate longevity of life with success.
In their general way of thinking, often enough, that is the complete equation.

AM'S PERSPECTIVE ABOUT A SUCCESSFUL LIFE

Of course, in AM our view is quite different: Longevity in and of itself is
not the main factor or criteria of a successful life.

Specifically Baba guides us that human life must be filled with great works
and noble deeds-- in a phrase, it must be an actional representation of a
high ideal.

Side by side Baba simultaneously warns us not to live a passive life--
devoid of any activity. Baba adamantly opposes such a static approach.

Baba says, "Mere survival is not enough; what is important is to live a
dignified life. The excellence of human life lies in action; it is through
action that human beings survive. They should aspire to live long while
performing noble deeds; it is futile to live just like an earthworm.
Indeed, each and every human being should vow, 'I do not know how long I
will survive; but as long as I exist I will live a glorious life, not an
ignominious existence like that of an earthworm'..." (AV-33)

So according to Baba living a long life devoid of doing any good deeds is a
waste of human existence-- rather that is the sunken plight of an earthworm.
Thus as human beings, our duty is to lead a bustling life: One that is
filled with high minded actions and guided by a benevolent intellect.

MODERNITY HAS BROUGHT LONGEVITY, NOT QUALITY

These days in this modern era with the advancement of science, many people
are living much longer lives in comparison to the past-- but unfortunately
with regards to the quality of their existence, that has decreased
dramatically.

Because although many are reaching the century mark and living more
than 100 years, but by their existence it is blatantly obvious that they
are just existing like animals: Only eating, drinking, and sleeping etc,
nothing more.

That is why according to Baba's dharmic stand, in this modern ere most are
just living the passive & degenerated life of an earthworm. Their lives a
pathetic display because they fail to utilise their human life for
something great-- for something noble. So although people's longevity has
increased, we cannot call their life successful.

            THE FORGOTTEN EQUATION: SAMSKARA THEORY

And not only that, people often fail to realise that they will have to
undergo all the reactions of their actions. In which case living a long
life filled with negative deeds invites serious problems-- serious
repercussions. It is a liability because people will have to suffer the
reactions of their bad actions.

Baba says, "If some bad actions are committed, naturally their consequences
also must be undergone." (SS-11)

Thus per the law of karma, individuals must undergo the negative reactions
of their actions.

So when human beings are living long lives but failing to do good works and
instead filling their existence with crude activities, then their long life
amounts to nothing but a huge pile of negative samskaras. That is the end
result of their long life. In which case who can term that as a successful
existence. Rather it is a disaster as they have invited so much suffering
and pain for themselves in the future.

              BABA'S WARNING: DON'T DO ASATKARMA

That is why Baba vehemently warns us about doing negative works-- bad actions.

                  Ya'vanna ks'iiyate karma

Baba says, "The bondage of asatkarma [bad actions] is iron...One has to
refrain from bad actions so that the chains of iron might not be forged."
(AV-30)

So if one does any bad action then there is no escape. Immediately they
have bound themselves up in iron chains-- that is Baba's stern warning.
The only answer then is to refrain from doing misdeeds-- sunk in
animalistic desires and devilish tendencies. And instead one should live
the life of a spiritual warrior, ever ensconced in noble works.

                          SUMMARY

All in all in this modern era human life has tragically became something
negative because people involve themselves in degenerated activities
thereby incurring a whole truck-load of negative samskaras. This we can see
happening all around us in the general society.

The root problem is that most people do not utilise their life for a
greater cause. This happens because of a lack of a spiritual way of living.
Instead they just get caught up in the negative flow of the crude society.

So our duty is to form a spiritual based society so that common human
beings can utilise their life from birth to death. We have to help people
discover their innate human tendency: To live a life always in search of
divine bliss.

          2-5: Tasminnupalabdhe parama' trs'n'a'nivrttih

Baba says, "There is in the living being a thirst for limitlessness..."
(Ananda Sutram, 2-5)

Indeed by Baba's grace everyone has the in-born desire to achieve
immortality-- to lead a spiritual existence and attain Him.

So the best thing is to utilise this human life for real fulfillment,
otherwise one's life is like the slothy existence of a slimy earthworm.
Overall then, for positive, spiritually-minded people a longer life is a
boon. But for negative people it is a curse.

Hence longevity of life is only something beneficial if that life is
utilised in a proper way, otherwise that longevity of life is nothing but a
curse.

BABA'S SPECIAL SECRET FOR A LONG LIFE

Here Baba graciously gives us a special guideline for living a long,
successful life-- one that is filled with peace and tranquility.

Baba says, "Spiritual practice makes the mind calm and quiet, and maintains
the nerves in a state of equipoise; and thus spiritual practice increases
longevity." (AV-33)

                     BABA'S BLESSING

By Baba's infinite grace, He has showered His divine blessing on us by
bringing us onto the path of spirituality-- thus making our lives successful.

Baba says, "You are all sa'dhakas, you are all spiritual aspirants...I know
certainly you will be successful...Kalya'n'amastu-- May you be blessed."
(DKG, 'Three Vital Factors')

Namaskar,
Mahendra

                           PRABHAT SAMGIITA

PS Intro: In this song the devotee is talking with various natural
expressions such as the dark clouds and the flower pollen and requesting
them to 'Please convey my heart-felt feelings to my Beloved, to my Parama
Purusa'.

"Ta're a'mi ceyechiluma prati paler pulake..." (PS 4773)

Purport:

I have desired Him each and every moment of my horripilation. In my
excitement and joy, and in my blissful days, I wanted that He should remain
with me so we could celebrate together. This was my regular way of
thinking-- my everyday desire. That is why while sitting in dhya'nasana
doing sadhana I searched Him in the effulgence of divinity-- in my
hiranmaya kosa. Because I wanted to get Him and bring Him close to me.

It is so painful for me that my most adorable One, my dearest One, is
not coming to me. I do not know where He has gone. O' black cloud, please
go to the divine kingdom and tell Him that with great hope and with
heartfelt longing I am waiting for His divine arrival. Tell that Divine
Entity, my dearest One, that since ages and ages I have been anxiously
waiting for Him-- calling Him each and every moment, with the yearning of
my heart. O' floating cloud, please go and convey this message to Him.
Because without Him my life is useless & meaningless.

My most adorable One has gone to some far distant place. I do not know
how to reach Him-- how to  get Him. O' flower pollen, please float away to
His divine land, where finite meets infinite: At that tangential point. Go
there and make Him listen to my heartfelt tales. By that way His heart may
melt and He may come here.

O' Baba, O' my dearest One, please shower Your causeless grace on me by
coming close...

Note: When one's mind is in a lower devotional state, then that sadhaka
generally feels quite satisfied and content thinking that Parama Purusa is
all around them. In contrast when one's devotional longing intensifies then
in that higher state that sadhaka wants Parama Purusa in a more intimate
and loving way. That type of stronger devotional yearning makes the
sadhaka's mind restless; and ultimately that extreme longing leads one to
moksa, final salvation.

This above song expresses the feeling of that higher devotional state
because the devotee has a very deep longing and strong desire to have His
closeness-- the sadhaka wants to attain Parama Purusa.

So in the above song when the sadhaka proclaims that he does not know where
Parama Purusa is, that does not mean that the sadhaka is devotionally dry--
nor does it mean that he really thinks that Parama Purusa has gone far
away. The main thing is that due to his strong love for Parama Purusa, the
devotee wants Him in a more intimate way than he is currently getting Him.
That is why this upsurge of devotional longing comes-- because his heart is
unfulfilled.

The entire point can be better understood with this following example.
Often times when a small infant is nearby its mother then it usually tries
to go closer and closer to the mother until finally that infant is on the
mother's lap-- being tightly embraced by the mother. So, comparatively
speaking, even if the baby is a few feet away from the mother then the baby
feels that their mother is very distant-- because the baby has a deep
desire to be directly on the mother's lap.  Whereas a grown man may be 30
feet away from his mother but feel quite fine and content-- because he does
not have the desire to be so close to his mother. So devotional longing is
not so much a factor of distance or proximity per se, rather it is related
with one's inner desire and the intensity of one's love.

Overall, there are two distinct scenarios when one's mind does not feel any
spiritual longing at all. Firstly, that happens when people are materially
oriented and quite crude. Then in that condition then they do not feel that
they need Parama Purusa at all. Hence they do not have hardly an iota of
devotional longing in their heart. Secondly, when any great sadhaka finally
becomes one with Parama Purusa then all their longing gets totally
exhausted because their devotional heart has been fully satiated--
satisfied. They have become permanently one with their Lord. In that
condition all, one no longer feels any devotional yearning in their heart.
Because their entire being is fully ensconced in His love-- they have
experienced that complete and final union with Him.

Baba says, "Preach the theory of one spiritual inheritance-- that every
living being is the child of the Supreme Entity and that all the people of
the world belong to the same family. This will have to be explained to
all-- that there will be a clash between different nations so long as the
feeling of nationalism exists." (PNS-4, p. 45)

"Jyoti-ujjval pra'n'occhal tumi priya..."    (P.S. 2229)

Purport:

Baba, O Parama Purusa, You are the controller of the universe. You are the brilliant effulgence-- full of vitality & saturated with the love. Baba, You are my dearmost. By Your own glory You are glorified; O Parama Purusa You are ever-adorable.   Baba, I do not have the strength to catch hold of You. With my little strength and with whatever means I have, I try to catch You-- but it is impossible for me. Instead I remain engrossed in my own self-- unit "I". This 'unit I' is preventing me from coming close to You. Baba, please transform my 'I-feeling', make it Yours.   With my own strength I will not be able to get You. With the thread of the spider's web I will not be able to bind You and hold You. Because of this, please by Your causeless grace, please allow Yourself to get held. This is my only request to You. Please keep this open for Your consideration.   Baba, in my mind, in my heart, I have deep longing for You-- to have You. Please grant me this by Your causeless grace. Please come in my shravan, manan, niddidhyasan, & dhyana and make me Yours...

                           == BABA ST0RY: SADHANA, DEATH & DOG ==

Namaskar,
Here is one short story that neatly highlights the great importance of sadhana for our human growth and development.

Many senior margiis were present on this particular day in Jamalpur; it is a well-known event, but at the same time an unknown story to many.

At one point in his career, Sitaram Rajgarhia of Bettiah had not been regular in sadhana and it was at that time that he went for Baba's darshan. Seeing the state of Sitaram ji, Baba graciously performed one demonstration.

Baba called upon Dasharath ji - whom Baba would regularly use for His demonstrations. Baba would grant Dasharath ji the special ability to see and know the past, present and future.

So on that day Baba requested Dasharath ji to tell what would happen if Sitaram ji died at this very moment. Then, blessed by Baba to know the unknowable, Dasharath ji replied that Sitaram ji would be reborn as a dog.

Hearing this Sitaram ji become horrified. He was totally shaken. Not knowing what else to do, he mentally requested His grace. Baba told him that His causeless grace is already showering on everyone. In order to be drenched in it, you have to be regular in sadhana.

Sitaram ji returned home and ardently practiced sadhana and did all his lessons regularly.

The next week Sitaram ji came back for general darshan. Again Baba did a demonstration using Dasharath ji.

Baba asked the same question as the prior week: "Dasharath ji, what would happen if Sitaram died at this very moment?". Then Dasharath ji replied that Sitaram ji would be granted human life, but not moksa as he has huge samskaras left.

Baba told him to do regular sadhana and continue to serve Parama Purusa and the creation.

This is a story which Sitaram ji himself used to tell on many an occasion.

This entire story shows how important it is to do proper sadhana. Without sadhana the mind invariably degenerates and our future is bleak. And with proper sadhana, we can reach life divine.

Regarding the above story, Baba gives the following philosophical explanation about how it works.

Baba says, "A man who has cultivated dog-like or swine-like desires all his life, dies with the same dog-like or swine-like frame of mind. Thereafter with the help of prakrti’s mutative force he acquires the form of a dog or swine in order to undergo the dog-like or swine-like saḿskáras. The great ascetic, King Bharata, died thinking of a fawn, and that was why it is written in the Puráńas (Indian mythologies) that he had to take the body of a deer at his next birth." (Subhsita Samgraha - 2)

Baba says, "According to human longings and desires or according to human propensive pursuit, their minds take form i.e., they will gradually acquire the like saḿskáras or reactive momenta. They first see within themselves what they aspire for and then let their minds flow towards it. Thereafter the external organs i.e., hands and feet, etc., set about achieving it. And so it is generally seen that the desires that they had been giving indulgence to throughout their lives, come hurtling over to them in a condensed form at the last hour, i.e., their mind-stuff takes the like mental form for the last time in order to shape itself into a fitting medium of the like saḿskáras. Even during the life-time as well it is seen that the mind-stuff of a drunkard, which imbibes within it an indomitable desire or saḿskára for wine, turns into a vantage ground for undergoing the next saḿskáras or momenta of pleasure and pain. That is to say, such a person gets scent of the wine shop by the sheer propulsion of his acquired mental propensity, if he happens to go to a new and unfamiliar place. A man who has cultivated dog-like or swine-like desires all his life, dies with the same dog-like or swine-like frame of mind.

Namaskar,
Sathanaryan

              ********************************************
                          Revolutionary Angle of Vision

Baba says, "The people who have committed some misdeeds driven by want (be
that want of food or clothes or of physical or mental gratification) make society responsible for it. They want to convey to us that their want was created due to flaws in the social system, which is, however, substantially true." (Human Society-1, '87, p.77)

Note: Here following are some observations about Baba's above teaching.

1. This tragic scene which Baba is describing is happening throughout the globe. In "third-world" countries and in so-called advanced nations, often the common mass is denied getting their basic necessities. With no other option, they are pressured into committing crimes.

2. And then, in turn, the "powers-that-be" wrongly blame that individual as label them as a thief or criminal.

3. However, in His dharmic & revolutionary approach, Baba views the situation completely differently. He holds that the society is at fault for putting its own citizens in such a dire position wherein they cannot even get their minimum requirements.

4. We should pay heed to Baba's guideline and also make it known that the real culprits are those who are hoarding all the material wealth and not allowing general society members to get their basic needs met.

5. Parama Purusa has given an enormous amount of wealth for maintaining the human society, but due to terribly improper distribution drastic inequalities have emerged. So many problems have erupted around the globe.

6. Everyone should remember Prout's unique approach that 100% of the wealth belongs to Parama Purusa. He is the owner. All can and have the right to utilise this wealth in a rational way, but He is the Creator and the Owner.

Baba's Equation for Work & Death

Date: Tue, 26 Oct 2010 21:10:08 -0400
To: AM-GLOBAL
From: Patrick Russell
Subject: Baba's Equation for Work & Death

Baba

Intro to PS: In this song the devotee is directly communicating with Parama
Purusa and recounting his own devotional tales.

Note: In tropical countries, in the summer season most of the flowers dry up due to the extreme hot wind. Some few selected flowers are available in that season. So this song tells about those summer flowers.

"Griis'ma'vaka'she se yadi a'se.." (Prabhata Samgiita #110)

Purport:

If Baba comes in my summer parched heart, then I will offer Him various kinds of flowers in abundance, I will offer Him my summer season flowers-- whatever the sweetest ones I have in my heart. If Baba comes with His rhythmic rosy feet into my mental garden that is decorated with the crimson sky and full of jasmine and magnolia trees, then in full prostration with my outstretched hands I shall offer flowers at His lotus feet.   In the blissful morning and evening hours when the sea breeze blows then the cuckoo of my mind calls Him with longing. In the flower grove of my heart, on the branches of the kimshuka trees my internal papiya bird calls out to Him-- while nearly the entire flow of devotional river in my heart has run dry.

Because of the scorching summer heat the sharica indica flowers of my mental grove have fallen and withered away. So my heart requests Baba to shower  His divine grace and come. My mind, which is filled with longing, deeply desires for His arrival to change everything into the luscious blossoms of spring. Because of the extreme summer heat the silk cotton trees are just laden with seeds. On the grapevine, bunches of grapes hang low for You. And in the arbor of the Madhavii flowers of my heart, swarms of black bees are humming around the blossoms.   In this summer atmosphere of my heart, if by showering His grace He comes then whatever are the best things of my heart I will offer at His lotus feet...

== WORK OF DYING PERSON ==

Namaskar,
In various discourses Baba guides us, "Die while working, and work even while dying." While some certainly understand Baba's intent, a few remain somewhat confused.

Commonly people think that in order to follow - "Die while working, and work even while dying" - they should do relief work or their designated social service project incessantly, i.e. without stopping. They do not do anything else nor think about anything else - to the degree that they even skip their food & sadhana etc. They just work 24 / 7 for their project. Naturally one will die in this fashion. According to their misunderstanding, then that will be, "Die while working, and work even while dying."

This has happened with many Wts and even some margiis. But if one studies our AM philosophy more thoroughly, it will be very evident what Baba really means by His teaching: "Die while working, and work even while dying." He does not want that we destroy our human frame by drowning ourselves in work, disregarding our daily routine of 16 Pts.

This matter should be crystal clear in everyone's mind. Failing that some degenerate due to their misunderstanding while others meet their demise far too soon.

WHAT BABA SAID AND WHEN

In His June 3, 1990 DMC discourse - "The Cult of Spirituality - The Cult of Pinnacled Order" -  in Ananda Nagar, Baba gave the following teaching:

Ka'm karte raho, ka'm karte raho,
Ka'm karte karte maro
Marte, marte bhii ka'm karo

Meaning:
Go on doing work, go on doing work
Die while working, and work even while dying

At first glance, it may seem that this is a very easy thing to understand. But actually, as noted above, more than a few misunderstand. This leads them to unwittingly contravene Baba's teaching. Invariably they become frustrated, degenerated or leave the path entirely. So we should all be very clear about this lest we fall in the same boat and meet the same misfortune.

"DIE WHILE WORKING": WHAT DOES IT MEAN

In His above teaching - "Die while working, and work even while dying" -  Baba is outlining the essence of true karma yoga which will eventually bring one onto the path of bhakti. First we have to understand Baba's message and then examine common pitfalls or areas of misunderstanding.

So what does it mean to "die while working"? Essentially there are two aspects:

1) Baba has blessed me with the strength to serve others; I am serving with His strength.
2) I am serving Him in His endless array of forms; I am serving Narayana.

Then - of course - to maintain this outlook regular sadhana is needed.

Hence when Baba says "Die while working", it does not mean that we should run ourselves ragged until we have totally ruined our physical body such that we die. Rather He is teaching us the path of true karma where we realise that we are serving with His strength and that we are serving Him in His many forms.

HOW PEOPLE DEGENERATE

BY MISUNDERSTANDING THIS TEACHING

Unfortunately, some misunderstand Baba's above mandate and this leads to their downfall. For instance:

a) Some think that "work while dying" means to skip all one's dharmic practices - asanas, dances, fasting, food, and sadhana - and just plunge oneself in social service until the body is destroyed. For example, a Dada running a children's home may just think about doing relief, relief, relief and die in that way. It is nothing but a myth that this is Baba's teaching.

Indeed, this misguided vision leads to so many problems including frustration, ill health, anxiety, and desperation. Some even leave Ananda Marga because they have forgotten their real purpose in life. So this manner is not good.

b) Others think that "work while dying" means that with my own strength I am serving poor people etc. This leads to ego & arrogance as one has forgotten bhumadrsti, or cosmic outlook. They have forgotten that one is serving with His strength and that one is serving Him in the form of this manifested world. Thus this way also is not the path of true karma. Unfortunately you may have seen some doing like this in our Marga. They brag about their work: "I have done this or that, I have built this jagrti and I have published this book etc." This type of expression is the work of a degenerated mind.

c) Some hold the misnomer that all work & all actions are karma yoga. Following this tenet they remain busy all the 24hrs in all kinds of crude & mundane engagements, and overlook their sadhana in the name of doing karma. In that case their work engagement only leads to bondage. True karma yoga actually begins when one feels that "He is the Doer, I am just fulfilling my role in His liila." For this idea to enter the mind, all kinds of devotional practices are a must. Then one's service will lead to liberation.

So we must always remember that Baba's formulas for perfectly adhering to the path of karma - i.e. "die while working" - entails two conditions. First one must think that,  "Parama Purusa has blessed me by giving me strength to serve": It His strength not mine.

And secondly one must ideate that "I am serving Parama Purusa in the form this manifested universe - I am serving Narayana." And all along one must be strict in sadhana and all their dharmic practices.

These are the pre-requisite factors for adhering to Baba's teaching, "Die while working", and following the path of true karma. And by this way one will garner more and more devotion, by His grace.

"WORK WHILE DYING": WHAT DOES IT MEAN

When Baba says, "Work while dying", then many get confused. They wonder how is it possible to work when the body is sick, old, and decrepit. How can one do work when they are on their deathbed.

And the answer is that at this point one's chief work is sadhana. We must remember that sadhana is also work. In various discourses, Baba Himself says that sadhana itself is karma.

When infirmed, one may not be able to render disaster relief work to the society, however a sadhaka will be able to ideate on Him and do sadhana. That is how to pay heed to the teaching, "Work while dying."

So the main work of one who is taking their last breaths on this earth is to do sadhana and ideate on Parama Purusa. That will be, "Work while dying."

FURTHER THOUGHTS

So the above represents the greater meaning of Baba's teaching: "Die while working and work while dying." Here are further thoughts & considerations on this issue.

1) As Ananda Margiis, our preference is not to go and live in a retirement home and lie there listlessly etc. So long as we have energy then we will serve. And when we have lived our life to the fullest and have no energy left then we will remain in bed and do sadhana. That is the formula and how it works.

2) One day each and every person will complete their life and leave their body. And if you remember Parama Purusa then you will become one with Him. So one must go on doing sadhana. That is the main work. Hence, the formula of true karma yoga encompasses all kinds of devotional practices.

3) Once again Baba's teaching is: "Die while working, and work even while dying."

The first part of this teaching guides us to do social service and sadhana for as long as we can. And the latter half guides us that when that when we are on our deathbed we should complete our karma by doing sadhana.

BABA'S BLESSING

By Baba's grace He has given the teaching for doing true karma on this earth and attaining liberation by His grace. Those who misunderstand His teachings only invite their own demise. By clearly understanding - "Die while working, and work even while dying" - then one's life on this earth is sure to be successful.

Namaskar,
Parama'tma

Note 1: RELATED TEACHINGS

Here Baba guides us that bragging about doing any work is pure foolishness since all energy to act comes from Him. One rendering service on the path of true karma will always remember this divine truth.

Baba says, "I have done this. I have done that.” You say this. But where from doth that energy come? It is not your individual energy. If you are not given food or water for a few days, what will happen? You will not have any energy. You cannot create any energy. Through food, physical energy is transmuted into your individual vital energy." ("The Supreme Cognition")

In this next teaching, Baba warns us that if one misunderstands dharmic teachings - like "Die while working, and work even while dying" - then one will degenerate. And indeed that is what we see happening to some in the Marga.

Baba says, "All people should have proper knowledge and understanding of what is shreya and what is preya, what is vidya' and what is avidya', for lack of this knowledge causes their downfall. (SS-3, "Supreme Benevolence and Mundane Pleasure")

Here in this below guideline, Baba warns how we should not waste our life in useless mundane pursuits losing sight of Him. By Baba's grace we should follow His guideline of true karma, where one is ever involved in His thought and serving Him.

Baba says, "I have spent my life in vain;
Such a great Lord I did not worship –
I lost the greatest jewel.
I am indeed an unfortunate creature;
I never enjoyed
Even a drop of nectar
Of the love of God." (SS-3)

Note 2: WRONGLY PRINTED IN OUR BOOKS

The discourse "The Cult of Spirituality - The Cult of Pinnacled Order" is printed in the book, Yoga Psychology. There the publishers printed Baba's teaching as follows:

Marte marte ka'm karo, ka'm karte karte maro

But this is not correct. Because when delivering that discourse Baba actually said:

Ka'm karte raho, ka'm karte raho,
Ka'm karte karte maro
Marte, marte bhii ka'm karo

Hence this stands as yet another case where the publishers could not properly transcribe Baba's original teachings.

Note 3: BABA ALSO TALKED ABOUT THIS
