== BE CAREFUL WHO YOU FOLLOW ==

Namaskar,
When a human being sees someone greater than themselves, then they admire that person, offer respect, and desire to become like that.

Thieves revere great criminals, players honor top athletes, students respect learned classmates, businessmen admire innovative entrepreneurs, and general aspirants respect highly devotional sadhakas.

This equation works in both directions - positive and negative.

The main point is that offering respect comes readily to all. People are eager to follow and emulate those whom they regard. There is a long history behind this as it is related with our fundamental human psychology.

Indeed no one can say that they are not involved in hero worship, in one form or another. Everyone is involved - and therein lies one's failure or success. It is that critical a component towards a person's development. Who you follow in life is everything.

Even then some may proudly declare that they do not adhere to any type of hero worship. So we should examine this issue at a deeper level.

Let's see how hero worship began, how it changed through the ages, as well as what it means today - both for sadhakas and non-sadhakas.

THE EARLY HISTORY

Just as certain developed animals - like cows, horses, elephants, and birds - are gregarious in nature and live collectively in order to care for and protect themselves from predators, since the earliest times human beings have done the same.

When living in the wild, humans would group together in order to face their enemies. Following a particular leader was absolutely vital for survival: Food, safety, protection, shelter etc. People had to pay heed to the call of their chosen leader in order to carry on. Failing that, one was certain to face an early demise.

Thus the trait to follow someone became a basic component of human life. Over the centuries the style of leadership may have gone through changes, but all along people have always been quick to follow a respected person and emulate their characteristics.

This is a built-in human behavior and has a huge effect on one's growth and development.

THE SPECIFICS OF EACH AGE

During the ksatriyan era, courage, valour and bravery were heralded as the top qualities and people naturally gravitated towards those who most personified such characteristics. In turn, those at the helm gained greater power and exploited others with their might.

When the era changed, then people valued something else.

With the rise of the vipran era, intellect and wisdom were seen as the greatest attributes and those at the helm were embodiments of those qualities. People naturally rallied around them and embraced that status in order to gain respect and be like their leader. To maintain their power, the leading vipras created all kinds of doctrines to keep themselves on top.

Over time, money became king and those at the helm were vaeshyas, ie capitalists. In this age people revered those with massive wealth, and overlooked all other qualities. Yet those ruling capitalists gobbled up all the land and material wealth to keep on top.

Now such vaeshyas are in power in most places. But anyone can identify the reigning era of a particular land or country by analysing who gets the most respect. Furthermore, one can assess the quality of the people by seeing who their leaders are. Crude heroes end up leading their followers into hell.

So be careful who you follow as it has a huge effect on the direction of your life.

WHO ONE SELECTS IS IMPORTANT

Who one selects to follow in life is critically important. For instance, if you follow a blind man and he falls into a well, then you too will fall into that same well. Likewise if follow a dharmika who is moving towards Parama Purusa, then you too will come closer to the Supreme Entity. This is the way it works. Just see.

WHAT IS HAPPENING NOWADAYS

Nowadays in the capitalist era, where material gain and sex is everything and pseudo-culture is rampant, those with the most respect and glamour have huge money.

Pop stars like the late Michael Jackson, athletes like Michael Jordan, movie stars like Angelina Jolie, performers like Madonna, and certain politicians and vaeshyas have scooped up the imagination, hearts and minds of the the people. People run like mad after such stars.

If a pop star gets a certain type of haircut or tattoo, or if a movie icon wears a certain style of dress, then naturally people go chasing in that direction. That is why the big corporations recruit and pay huge money to pseudo-culture stars and icons to model their wares and products as it will boost sales into the millions and billions. In that way they lure and cheat the common people into buying their products. Because the public will do anything and everything to follow their revered one.

People even become get emotionally attached with certain products and brands like Apple computers. Even intellectual get befooled and misguided thinking that everything that Apple does is great. Many companies have this kind of aura: Google, Nike etc. They have cultish followings.

Plus in this superficial era, even fake yoga stars in the west are gaining clout in the form of sponsorships and hero-worship etc.

According to our human psychology, people like to follow others but due to poor examples they get goaded in the wrong direction - they get herded like sheep.

By this way the general public gets drawn into all kinds of degrading activity. To get wealth, even good people will cheat and steal; to get beauty people resort to plastic surgery and skimpy clothing; to attract the opposite sex, people have literally begun to dress like prostitutes.

All because people blindly chase after the leaders of the day. And when the leaders are degenerated, the common populace will be too.

That is why it is so important to carefully choose who you follow in life.

SOME MAY WRONGLY DENY

Hearing all this, some may strongly claim that they are not prone to hero worship. They will proudly state that they follow no one and are independent thinkers. Many sophisticated and liberal people talk like this.

But truth be known, they are pawns of their chosen leader(s), unknowingly. Just walk into their house and it becomes very clear what they are and whom they revere. Everyone is a fan of someone. Everyone bows down to someone to get respect.

A millionaire prostrates himself to the billionaire; a beauty queen surrenders to some Hollywood goddess; a car enthusiast gives himself to those who own a Mercedes. Everyone in this world is fascinated by something or someone. That is the way of the world. None can claim that they are outside of this dynamic.

By this way, a person sinks or swims. Tragically, most sink as they get lulled into the crude operations and economics of the day. That is why it is critically important to carefully choose with whom you place your respect.

According to their chosen hero, common people will change their habits, tastes, likings - indeed their entire modus operendi is affected. Thus it is absolutely critical that people become aware of who they respect. A person must know who their heroes are - otherwise unknowingly they may fall into a black hole. Especially in this present era when people are fans of characterless individuals.

YOUTHS ARE MOST AFFECTED

Unfortunately, up till now, the masses have most often embraced "goats", i.e. degraded persons, as leaders. This is especially true these days. And the ones who suffer the most are our impressionable youths. They are most prone to be
misguided by crude idols. This even leads to their ruination.

As Ananda Margiis we cannot let the situation remain as standstill, where impressionable people get lulled into false hopes and degrading ways. We are to encourage such youths - and the entire society - to give respect to higher ideals like social service etc. Then things will start moving in the right direction.

Let's then take a look at the workings in AM, that will give us ideas and inspiration for guiding the general society.

WHO SHOULD GET THE MOST RESPECT

Baba has designed Ananda Marga along a totally different concept. In AM, we do not offer our respect based on materials things, status, or other crude manners. In AM, respect is given based on one's conduct.

Baba says, "Your ideal is represented by your conduct. Your learning, your social or economic status have nothing to do with your ideal." (A'nanda Va'nii #13)

Baba says, "Aca'ran'a't pa't'hayati yah sah a'ca'ryah – One who teaches through one’s conduct is an a'ca'rya." (AV-23)

And in AM, good conduct means adhering to dharmic principles: Godhood not crudity, selflessness not selfishness, benevolence not malevolence.

To instill this within all in AM, Baba would publicly honor those involved in doing dharmic works. With this type of healthy competition, Baba guided everyone towards righteous works. By this way we all understood that we would earn the respect and regard of others.

For instance Baba would reward the top bhukti with the title, "Jana Seva' Sealed". This bhukti that rendered the most social service won this award. And like that there were all kinds of healthy competitions to get our minds goaded in the right direction.

Competitions like: Sixteen Points, kaoshikii, tandava, dharma mitram (most pracar competition), conduct rules and so many other arenas. Prizes were often based on how much you followed bhagavad dharma and helped the downtrodden masses and the neglected peoples.

Baba says, "You are to purify [yourself] with the help of sa'dhana' and jana seva'. These two factors, sa'dhana' and jana seva', will keep the mental mirror in proper condition, in good condition." (AV-3)

This was all His entirely unique and revolutionary approach. And because we all followed Baba our minds, desires, and actions got goaded in this totally dharmic direction. It is His grace. By this way the whole society grows and there will not be any exploitation from one group to the next.

In the past each of the ruling groups, whether it ksattriyas or vipras, favoured their own clan and exploited the rest. And now today vaeshyas are ruthlessly exploiting everyone to the bone - in ways never before imagineable.

In our Marga, because some have fallen away from AM ideals, there is group exploitation. Tragically, groupists revere crude power not jiivan dharma. So some are moving in this direction. But this phase will be short-lived.

By once again following His teachings and ways, prama will be restored and honor will be given to those involved in Sixteen Points etc.

Baba's is the classic example of how by following someone great, i.e. Taraka Brahma, one will advance on the path towards liberation and salvation.

In a nutshell here is how it works in AM: Our Goal is Parama Purusa so if anyone follows those ideals that lead to Parama Purusa then they earn respect of others. Naturally then, all will move in this direction. It is His wish and hence inevitable.

HOW TO KNOW WHO GETS RESPECT

In the general society it is not like that. People are not familiar with dharma or Taraka Brahma so they get hitched up in another direction. To understand how any society is working, find out what the children want to be when they grow up. Then it will be clear who they follow and what they respect.

Tragically, today most follow a crude example. As Ananda Margiis we are to turn this negative into a positive.

When are are aware that people have a natural tendency to adore those they deem as beings great, then why not utilise this in the proper way and bring all onto the path of salvation. Let all be guided towards parama'rtha and not towards bondage or ruination.

By propagating AM ideals people will follow true sadhakas and start moving in this direction.

Everyone should be fully warned that they need to be careful about who they follow. To achieve greatness one should follow Ista, i.e. Parama Purusa. To fall into a mud puddle of crudity, then follow any pseudo-culture icon.

That is why everyone should be extremely careful about who they follow.

BABA'S BLESSING

Baba has blessed us with the ability to understand that we are infinite and that we have the capacity to become one with Paramatma. But that can only happen if we are critically aware about whom we follow in life.

If society is misguided then even good people will be diverted to do negative things. - what to say what will happen to bad people.

As humans, ours is the journey from darkness to enlightenment. By following the true Ista and His ideals, heaven will come on this earth.

Baba says, "United you will have to remain, this is your duty. So that the people of the world may remain united, it is your duty to bring the mahavishva as soon as possible. There will be peace and happiness in the universe, and, established in one indivisible ideology, humanity will march ahead toward the Supreme Goal. Victory be with you!" (Disc MHB)

PRABHAT SAMGIITA
"A'ma'y keno bha'laba'sile..." (P.S. 2283)

Puport:

Baba, You are so loving and so gracious - why do You love me so much. I do not have any quality, nor do I have any knowledge or learning. What then did You see in me that made You shower Your grace on me. You have saturated my heart with a strong feeling of devotion for You. You have bestowed upon me an intellect to serve the society. Knowing that I am shelterless, You have granted me everything. You have given me all that was needed. It is Your causeless grace. Baba, You brought me on this earth by providing me with a human body. And You filled my mind with devotion. And top of all, You infused a strong longing of paramartha for You. Even then, such is my miserable condition that I always remain forgetful about You and Your grace. Baba, why do You love me so much...

Definition of "Real Discipline"

Baba says, "And what is discipline? The Sam'skrta term for 'discipline' is 'anusha'sanam'. And what is anusha'sanam?

Hita'rthe sha'sanam ityarthe anusha'sanam

When the code of discipline is imposed with the spirit of welfare, with the spirit of development, it is called `anusha'sanam' in Sam'skrta. There is no corresponding English word." (AV-3 p.30)

Both are Ignorant

Baba

                  == BOTH ARE IGNORANT ==

Namaskar,
In our Ananda Marga, our goal is Parama Purusa - no second or third
entity. Baba is the focus of our each and every thought, word, and deed.
That is our ideal.

Naturally then, when we do namaskar, we are paying salutations to Him,
to that Supreme Consciousness residing within another unit being. It is
not that we are saluting that person, per se. That is not at all our
endeavor. Only we are paying our respect and homage to Baba in the form
of that person when we use the namaskar greeting.

Unfortunately, some completely misunderstand this basic aspect of AM
life. They think people are saluting them or that they are saluting
another human being. This leads to ego, vanity, feelings of inferiority,
and all kinds of delusions in the mind - as well as doing the greeting
improperly. In that case the whole namaskar salutation is ruined and one
will be degraded.

Many may deny any wrongdoing in this regard, but there is a sure-fire
system to understand who is doing namaskar properly, and who not.

The aim of course is not to embarrass anyone but to save them from
degradation and keep all moving on the sentient path.

                 QUICK REVIEW OF NAMASKAR

Although we all use or namaskar greeting on a daily basis, here are some
of Baba's clear-cut guidelines about this practice. After reviewing
these guidelines we will apply our litmus test so you yourself can see
who is misguided and ignorant about the namaskar salutation.

First Baba clearly states that when doing namaskar, we are paying
salutations to Parama Purusa - The Divine Entity. In the dogmatic
religions and in the kingdoms of old, people would bow and salute other
human beings. Our namaskar mudra is not at all like this.

Baba says, "Tadekam' jagatsa'ks'iiru'pam' nama'mah. “If there is anyone
to whom spiritual aspirants should surrender, if there is anyone to whom
they should pay salutations, it is Parama Purus'a.” The system behind
salutations is to look for the Supreme Being that is the inner essence
of a person, and to pay salutations to that Parama Purus'a." (SS-11)

So the first point is that when doing namaskar we are recognising the
Supreme within another jiivatman, we are not bowing or greeting one
other human being.

Here is Baba's next guideline - that we should always be ready to do
namaskar first.

Baba says, "As ideal human beings you should not wait to give namaskar
after another has greeted you: you should rather take the first
opportunity to greet others. When someone greets you, it is merely
common courtesy for you to salute back; you do not become an ideal human
being thereby. Rather one who seizes the first opportunity to salute
others is the ideal. So you should always make an effort to do namaskar
to others first: you should not care whether the person whom you greet
will greet you in return or not. (When people come to me during personal
contact, I greet them first whether they salute me or not.) By giving
honour to others you will not be belittled, you will rather enhance your
prestige." (AMIWL-11)

Thus Baba's teaching is that we should always strive to be the first to
do namaskar. None should fall into the complex that, "I am better than
that person or I am more senior than that person so they should salute
me first."

To think like this is to both degrade and cheat oneself. One is degraded
because they have forgotten that namaskar is a salutation to Parama
Purusa - not to any individual or oneself - and they are cheating
themselves because they are missing out on the opportunity to greet the
Supreme.

So these are two classic aspects of Baba's guidelines about doing
namaskar: First that we are saluting Him in the form of a unit being and
second that we should be vigilant to do namaskar first.

                   ONE OTHER SPECIAL POINT

Baba has also detailed another important quality of the namaskar
salutation by clearly telling the import of the mudra. Sometimes people
fail to bring their thumbs to the trikuti point or their palms to their
heart. But Baba has given a pointed explanation about this. In brief,
bringing the palms to the triktui point helps focus the mind and honor
Parama Purusa and when bringing the palms to the heart we offer all our
feelings unto Him. See note 1 below for Baba's extended explanation
about the special significance of our namaskar mudra.

                      SPECIAL LITMUS TEST

Now that we have the most essential points about our namaskar mudra
clearly in mind, it is time to apply the litmus test to see if we and
those around us are doing namaskar properly or not.

If you, me or anyone walks into a room and waits for others to do
namaskar to them, it means they clearly do not know that meaning.
Because if in our heart and mind we understand that namaskar is in fact
a salutation to the Supreme, then one will be vigilant and ready to
quickly to namaskar to anyone they see. Forgetting this point, then one
will think, "I am a man of respect, let others salute me first." In that
case, one will not do namaskar first. That means they have totally
misunderstand the entire essence of namaskar. In such situations, they
are merely demonstrating their own idiocy or ignorance.

You may have seen such situations. If you walk down the hallways these
days in Ranchi or Tiljala, so many big Dadas will never say namaskar to
their junior workers. Rather such Dadas will expect that all should
respectfully do namaskar to them and in response they may casually wave
or nod their head.

When any high posted Dada does like this, then they have totally
degraded themselves by totally forgetting the divine truth that namaskar
is being done to the Supreme, not to them. But instead such Dadas are
puffing up their own ego and vanity thinking that the namaskar
salutation is a reflection of one's own greatness or social standing.
Such is the height of their blindness and ignorance.

Then if one tours any overseas sectors, often we find that those who
have become family acaryas fall into this same awful predication. With
their new found title, such family acaryas think all should honor them
by doing namaskar first. Again, this is nothing but the proof of their
own ignorance.

Then of course, whether acarya or not, any arrogant person is prone to
degrading themselves in this way by thinking that namaskar is being done
to them.

So we should all think - review the situation in our own minds - and
make sure that we are not falling into this trap, nor allowing others to
do so. We should know that when doing namaskar we are offering our
salutations to the Supreme.

                    SPECIAL LITMUS TEST (Part 2)

Of course, no problem exists in isolation - it is never or hardly ever a
one-sided affair. Two people are most often involved in any wrongdoing.
Same then is the case with the misunderstanding about namaskar.

Up till now, we have been primarily discussing the ignorance of the
person who is receiving the namaskar salutation. They wrongly think that
namaskar is being done to them.

The other side of the scenario is the person who is actually doing
namaskar. The proper spirit should be that we are paying our salutations
to Baba, the Supreme One.

But it sometimes happens - either to us or others - that we are thinking
that an important person has entered the room so we should quickly go
and do namaskar. Or we may think that the person before me is so great
that I must be extra careful to show him my respect by doing namaskar
very slowly. Or anytime the thought infests our mind that the salutation
within namaskar is being done to the person in front of us, and not
Parama Purusa, then the person doing namaskar has also fallen into
dogma. That is sign of one's own ignorance.

Thus whenever a so-called great person walks into any room waiting for
others to do namaskar to them and whenever a person sees a so-called
great person and think I must honor them by doing namaskar, then in that
moment, both parties involved are 100% ignorance. Both are misusing and
abusing the namaskar salutation and degrading themselves.

                  SPECIAL LITMUS TEST (Part 3)

One other scenario is if an aged or senior or respected person sees a
5-year old boy then they may think, "Why should I do namaskar or pay
respect to this small child." This is also a diseased outlook.

We must always remember that Parama Purusa is timeless and ageless and
whatever form is standing before us, He resides within all. Thus none
should fall into ignorance by failing to do namaskar in such circumstances.

                       BABA'S BLESSING

By Baba's grace, He has blessed us with one very special type of
salutation to recognise His presence in all circumstances and
interactions. This is a spiritual boon. So we must always watch
ourselves to ensure we are following the word and spirit of His namaskar
guidelines. Failing that - should we become at all ignorant in this
regard - then that will only lead to our degradation.

Remembering Him is the path of vidya and elevation and forgetting Him is
the path of avidya and degradation. When doing or receiving namaskar, we
must always bear in mind salutations are being done to Him, and not any
unit being.

Namaskar,
Divyacaksu

Note 1:      BABA'S UNIQUE EXPLANATION OF NAMASKAR

Baba says, "What is our style of extending goodwill? We say, Namaska'r.
That is, “I pay respect to the Supreme Entity residing within you.” You
should remember this. “I concentrate all the good feelings of my mind
here in the trikut'i [between the eyebrows].”

In your mind there are so many propensities. Propensities are called
vrtti in Sanskrit. So there are so many vrttis, so many propensities, in
your mind. One portion of your mind is saying, “Today I’ll take hot
rice.” Another portion is saying, “In the near future I’ll try to go to
Calcutta.” Another portion of your mind is saying, “Now I’ll have to do
some relief service to the people.” Another portion is saying, “I should
do something concrete for the refugees.” There are so many thoughts
within your mind."

"Another portion of your mind is saying, “I’ll become a wholetime
worker. I’ll leave my house.” Another portion is saying, “But my mother
will be weeping.” Another portion is saying, “No, no, I’ll have to do
something for the greater world.”"

"So many thoughts are in your mind. But you should concentrate all your
thoughts at a particular point, here – that is, with all the strength
and goodwill of your mind you are doing this – you are touching these
two palms here [trikut'i]. That is, you are concentrating all your
goodwill here, because you are paying respect to Parama Purus'a residing
within this body; this body; this body; this body [pointing to different
people]. First do this."

"And not only mental concentration, you are human beings, you have got
so many sentiments also. Human sentiment, you know? When you feel much
joy you burst into tears, when much sorrow you burst into tears. These
are sentiments. And human beings are guided by sentiment, more by
sentiment than by logic, you must not forget it – more by sentiment than
by logic. So your sentiment is also there, so with all the concentration
of your mind and with all the sweetness of your sentiment, from the very
core of your heart, you are paying respect to Parama Purus'a residing
within human structure. So you do this [palms together at mid-point of
chest], and say, Namaska'r."

"I think you have understood it? A very sweet idea. So it is my opinion,
my desire, that human society [be] one, indivisible; it is an expressed
form, a sweet expression, of Parama Purus'a, to whom you should always
pay respect by doing namaska'r." (AV-30)

Note 2: NAMASKAR TO HUMAN BEINGS - NAMASTE TO PARAMA PURUSA

One other dogma floating around the fake and new-age yoga community in
the west and in India also is that use of namaste. This is a bit of a
separate topic, but in general one should understand that namaskar is
used with human beings and namaste is only used when honoring Parama
Purusa directly, not seeing Parama Purusa in the form of some unit
being. Our Marga should not fall prey to this dogma. There is an
important distinction with can be discussed in greater length. Suffice
to say here that we should pay heed to Baba's below guideline.

Baba says, "The generally-accepted rule is that one should say
namaska'ra to a human being or a god or goddess, but one should say
namaste or namastubhyam only to Parama Purus'a, not to any other
entity." (SS-11)

                           PRABHAT SAMGIITA

"Tumi ka'che theke karo du'r..." (P.S. 2377)

Purport:

Baba, You are so close but even then You are very far, very distant.
This thing I know that You remain with me side by side-- You are hiding in
my mind also. But even then You are beyond my reach. I always cry to get
You. My heart remains full of longing.
In search of You, I have visited many countries and countless distant
places. I have searched in the mountains, in the jungles. In so many places
I have wandered around in search of You. I have taken baths in so many holy
ponds, rivers, and places-- different pilgrimages. But I never tried or
cared to look within, never did I look in the deep core of my heart in
order to get You. That is why I did not get You. Just I was completely
misguided and by that I was searching You externally.
Baba, with me You are playing a divine liila since eternity. Between
You and me this loving divine play is going on and on. Sometimes You come
very close and sometimes You go far, far distant. But always You call me
from there and pull my heart towards You by playing Your flute. Baba, You
are very close even then You are distant...

          *************************************************
                  Groupist Leaders Do Like This

Baba says, "Ism (groupism etc) is responsible for disrupting human harmony.
...[When any particular] group will lose its prestige, the people in the
group feel ashamed, and in that condition they do not hesitate to take
recourse to ignoble means in order to save the prestige of their nation,
caste, group." (PNS-16, p.3)

Here above Baba is explaining this very point that for those engaged in
groupism, power and prestige is everything. Groupists have no interest in
the welfare of the collective society. Their interest is only in
propagating their own group. And if they feel this is not getting done,
then they will take any negative means they can to again bring prestige
to their group. Unfortunately in our organisation various groups are
doing like this. But margiis and good Wts are not supporting any form of
groupism.

The Waiting Room

Baba

                 == THE WAITING ROOM ==

Namaskar,

Baba says, "This world is just like [a] waiting room. You are to remain
here for a very short span." (AV-12)

Tragically, in this modern world, the mass of people live and plan their
lives in such a way as if this world is their permanent abode. Due to
the ill effects of gross materialism, common citizens think that their
bank account, their house, their job, their physical appearance, their
spouse, and their worldly possessions are the prized aspects of their
existence. For this reason, they use cent-per-cent of their energy
running after these ephemeral things, mistaking them to be the glory of
human life.

This is the way materialism has led everyone astray, into some dark
illusion.

Baba says, "This type of crude material knowledge concerned with the
crude materialism has done much harm to human society during the last
one century." (AV-2)

There is an inner aspect to our human existence that is hungry, yet the
humanity is neglecting that which is inside because of being fully
intoxicated with life's material pleasures.

EVEN WE ANANDA MARGIIS SUFFER FROM THIS

As Ananda Margiis, we all know what the Goal of life is, as well as what
it takes to get there. The Goal is Baba and the way to get there is by
sadhana. This fact everybody knows.

Yet, to some or more degree, we have also suffered from the ill effects
of materialism, as it has infested each and every pore of society. It is
very difficult to completely separate oneself from that environment.
Huge billboards, internet ads, crude social values, financial pressures
etc meet us at each and every turn.

One of the clear-cut downturns of all this is that some of us do not put
proper emphasis on sadhana in our lives.

I can say that this is certainly true for me. I always think, 'I will do
sadhana'; yet when it is time to start my practice I can find any number
of other things to do. And when I do sit down for sadhana, then often it
gets curtailed due to lack of time, lack of concentration, or feelings
of hunger.

Perhaps some of you have also experienced this or similar things.

And the gross materialism which surrounds us does not help; it leads to
more spiritual lethargy. Whatever inherent lethargy we may have towards
sadhana is multiplied by today's crude environment. Because the world
and all its inhabitants are running one direction, and we are trying to
move in another. We are going against the tide.

Baba says, "The present-day materialism has brought humanity to this
predicament. Its consequences are dreadful." (NSS)

               BABA'S GRAPHIC EXPLANATION

Before analysing more of the in's & out's of this issue, here is Baba
special teaching about spiritual lethargy, or procrastination in sadhana.

Baba says, "Spiritual lethargy is the worst. Spiritual lethargy means
not to sit for meditation regularly. Those with spiritual lethargy have
time for all other actions, but for spiritual practice there seems to be
no time. They say, “It’s already late today – I’ll do a short meditation
right now, and devote more time to sa'dhana' tomorrow.” They sit
attentively inside the cinema hall, but in dharma sa'dhana' they feel
sleepy." (AMIWL-10)

We should all read the above quote multiple times and honestly evaluate
how far Baba's teaching applies to our own lives.

                     OLD WAYS OF LIVING

In addition to today's gross materialism, here are other reasons why it
is often a struggle to move on the path of sadhana.

As Baba tells us, every human being has come from animal life-- at one
point in time or another. So we are highly familiar with animalistic
desires and propensities. We need not be reminded about these things.
That is a known path to us, and in general people gravitate towards the
familiar and are hesitant to take up new enterprises.

For that reason, it take little or no energy for people to succumb to
the four basic propensities: Food, fear, procreation, and sleep. No one
needs any special training in these spheres; the mind automatically runs
after these things.

In contrast, when sadhana is the most subtle practice for human beings,
then invariably it is something that is very new and unfamiliar to us.
Often it is not something that we have lifetimes of experience with.
Whereas, for incarnations and incarnations in animal and human form, we
have been deeply engrossed in material pursuits.

So being attached to this old way of living certainly contributes to
spiritual procrastination.

                OTHER REASONS WE PROCRASTINATE

AVIDYA MAYA & SO-CALLED OBJECTIVE ADJUSTMENT

Then there are other things that lead to procrastination in sadhana:

1) Avidya Maya: The force of avidya maya casts allurements each and
every moment, and when the whole society has fallen prey to the spell of
avidya maya, then the force of that maya multiplies and it is very
difficult to escape. If you know you should do sadhana, but all your
worldly pressures tell you to work late, or buy a big house, or go to
the movies, or watch TV, or whatever, then it is difficult to move on
the path of sadhana. And every time we give in to the ignorance of
avidya, then the more sadhana slips out of our fingers, and becomes
something totally foreign.

2) Objective Adjustment: In the name of objective adjustment, we leave
our spiritual practice behind and run after worldly endeavours. We then
justify that going to dharmacakra and doing sadhana there is enough for
the entire week, or thereabouts.

3) Microvita: Various microvita also pull us down and hinders our
sadhana routine.

Plus when the entire society is moving towards money, matter, prestige,
then that multiplies the problem.

Each of us individually should take an honest look at who we are and
what is happening with our sadhana routine, and make special efforts to
overcome whatever is hindering our practice.

WE HAVE NOT COME HERE FOREVER

Here is Baba's special teaching about the waiting room phenomenon.

Nowadays, everyone thinks that this world is their permanent abode. They
may say otherwise but practically they live as if this is the case.

So we should pay heed to Baba's strict warning.

               Smarana nitya anityatam

Baba says, "You should remember always that you have come here for a
short span. You won’t remain in this world for a long period. You may
remain here say for ninety or hundred years or say for one hundred and
fifty years. Some saints like Traelaunga Sva'mii lived here for three
hundred and fifty years. He lived in Varanasi in India and died in this
twentieth century. But you are to live under certain limitations –
limitations of time, space and person."
"So you should always remember that you have come here for a very short
span. It is just like a waiting room of a railway station. You remain
there for a short period and when the train comes, you leave the waiting
room. This world is just like that waiting room. You are to remain here
for a very short span."
"You should always remember this fact – “I have come here for a short
span and I won’t remain here for a very long period. My home is
elsewhere. I am just like a tourist.” You should always remember this
fact. And as a universal tourist, you, while leaving for your permanent
home, won’t require a passport." (AV-12)

So we must not treat this world as our permanent abode. We should always
keep our mind fixed on Him. And internally, we must remind ourselves
again and again that we have only come here for a short time. Then and
only then can we truly understand that sadhana-- and not money or
possessions-- is the cream of life.

Here again is Baba' reminder about the nature of this human life.

Baba says, "This short period of time from birth to death is human life.
Human beings have come from the world of invisibility and at the end of
this short span of time will return to the world of invisibility. Those
people can be called intelligent who utilize every moment of their short
life engaged in spiritual practice." (APH-4)

Failing to adopt the path of sadhana, will lead us on an endless spiral
of suffering and pain in the myriad of deaths and rebirths in this
material world.

                         BABA'S BLESSING

By Baba's grace we must realise that this world is not our permanent
abode, overcome all tendencies of spiritual lethargy, do sadhana, and
reach up to Him.

Baba says, "The only way to advance is to follow the path of vigorous
spiritual practice." (AMIWL-8)

Giriish

Purport:

Baba, You know that I am not an A-grade devotee. So due to this if You
do not love me then it is no problem, no harm. But please come close and
sit. If You do not like to sit in my little hut, then at least please
come and stand inside with Your sweet smile. Oh my Lord, everyone longs
for You in their heart. That longing I also have and for that I have
requested You to remain with me. And if You do not like to listen to my
request then just You please come close and this much You tell me, 'I do
not love you even a pinch'. Baba, I will go on singing Your song; and my
heart will be mingled with that tune & melody-- longing for You in
dhyana. But because I am not an A-grade devotee that is why I will not
force You to come and sit in my dhyana. So it is exclusively up to You.
What You like that You do. Baba, please come close with Your sweet smile...

                   == RESPECTFUL DISCUSSION & FREE DEBATE ==

Note: This letter is in reply to the posting "Name Calling" of 7 Jan 2011. That posting addressed the matter of how one Dada started abusing one margii who raised one ideological concern. Dadaji called that margii a dog.

Namaskar,
I appreciate this letter- it is very good. I especially like this paragraph:

Baba's expressed policy is that any and all philosophical discussion is welcomed in our Marga - the only stipulation is that one's tone should be "respectful" towards others. That is Baba's explicit guideline.

Baba says, "I am not saying that one should accept whatever people say, but surely non-acceptance and intolerance are not the same. Why is there a mania for refuting the views of others anyway? If necessary, different views can be compared and presented in philosophical books. The philosophical and psychological loopholes in an argument may be pointed out without being disrespectful. But is the attempt to insult others indicative of magnanimity?" (HS-1; i.e. Human Society - 1, "Moralism")

Hence Baba's teaching is that our philosophical discussions should be dignified. We may or may not agree with the next person, but our language, manner and choice of words should be civilised - neither lowly nor disrespectful. That is Baba's above teaching.

MORE ON THIS CRITICAL TOPIC

In various chapters Baba talks on this same topic, i.e. the critical importance of respectful language during open and free debate. Here are more points for us to consider.

In the dogmatic religions and in terrorist and communist organisations, there is no room for free and open discussion. But AM is totally different - our Ananda Marga is bhagavad dharma. AM propagates the gospel of neo-humanism: liberation of intellect. The free flow of intellect is highly needed in order to expand the mind and reach to the ultimate destination, i.e. Parama Purusa.

During open discussions and debates, those who lost their logic shout out loud. That is how to recognise such persons. They are dogmatic. In AM, Baba has certainly given the right of open debate and free discussion. Yet He has also mandated that the review of issues should be done in a very respetful manner. But ignorant and narrow minded people - those lacking understanding of Baba's teaching - do just opposite. They start yelling and shouting.

We should remember however that those who are shouting are also our brothers. So we should have sympathy for them as well.

Here are Baba's teachings on this critical topic.

Baba says, "Bad-tempered people often start shouting like a crow for no reason. If you ask a peaceable person, “Excuse me, sir, where does the number fifteen bus leave from?” he will give you the right answer, but a bad-tempered person will shout – “Is it my job to keep track of where the number fifteen bus leaves from! Why are you wasting my valuable time by asking me such questions? Why are you bothering me with these questions!”" (SC-3, Disc: 20)

Baba says, "Shameless people, shouting like a crow, often say such things that courteous people would not say out of modesty." (SC-3, Disc: 20)

In His below cited short story book, Baba explains how the demon became so frustrated that he lost all his wits and started shouting. Similarly this Dada lost his sense; he totally forgot that in AM Baba has given the right of free thinking and open debate. On each and every point, civilised, respectful, dignified debate is welcome. And through it all, a respectful tone must be maintained. That is Baba's teaching. There is no place for shouting like the demon Baba describes in the following quote.

Baba says, "Now the demon became restless. He began to run to and fro like an insane person, tearing his hair and shouting violently. In no time his mask of gentleness was rent asunder. Then he started crying out loudly in his demonic tongue." (Golden Lotus of the Blue Sea)

Baba says, "There must be flexibility of intellect in order to follow the path of logic. If this fundamental flexibility is lacking then shouting will dominate logic." (AFPS-9)

Note 1:                            HERE IS THE ORIGINAL POSTING

For your ease and convenience, if you did not see or read the original posting on this topic earlier, here it is for your review:

Baba

                                       == NAME CALLING ==

Namaskar,
Just the other day one margii raised an ideological point for review and discussion. In response, one Dada abused that margii by calling him "a dog".

Now it is for you to decide if this was proper or not.

                                         WHAT IS AT STAKE

In our Ananda Marga, free and open debates and healthy discussions are wholly embraced. That is Baba's explicit teaching. In so many discourses Baba has put forth this idea.

Baba says, “Different theories and doctrines with their numerous interpretations and connotations should be developed. No one should object to that, because intellectual clash and cohesion cause the human intellect to progress. Why should we keep all the doors of the human intellect closed?”. (Human Society Is One and Indivisible – 3)

Baba says,"When people's ideas are so fixed that they will not entertain any discussion or argument it is called “fanaticism”...In one sense they are worse than animals, because animals do not harbour any communal feeling." (Prout Nutshell, Part 21)

Baba points out that only communities plagued by dogma - like the stagnant religions and communism etc - do not allow open discussions.

Baba says, "What is dogma? Where there is no logic, where there is no support of intellectuality, where there is no debate and free discussion, but there is only a severe imposition forcing people to accept something, there is dogma." (A Few Problems Solved-5)

Thus when one avadhuta has called one margii "a dog" for raising a point of philosophical inquiry, then we all have to think what direction things are headed.

Are we going to allow our AM society to become like the dogmatic religions where logic and reasoning is prohibited and one must blindly follow the ruling priests, lest one risk being excommunicated or verbally assaulted.

                                       RESPECTFUL DISCUSSION

Unfortunately, the avadhuta of Ananda Marga who called that margii "a dog" swerved from Baba's guideline - either he did this knowingly or unknowingly. In either case it is a shame as we all wish to see our avadhutas successful in their role.

Baba says, "Those who have the responsibility to show the path to others should be of superlative character with the most refined conduct...Persons who teach such well-regulated behaviour to others by their own conduct are called ácáryas." (Ananda Vacanamrtam, Part 31)

So when one of our avadhutas calls an innocent margii "a dog" when that margii has simply raised an ideological issue, then that expression undermines their role as an acarya. Baba Himself has furthermore given this below conduct rule explicitly for our workers.

Baba says, "You should always think that you are to see the Cosmic brotherhood, so your voice should be as sweet as honey..." (Avadhuta Conduct Rules, Pt #8 of Fourteen Points)

Indeed it is unfortunate, because that avadhuta has dedicated his life for a high ideal yet has veered off course by calling that margii "a dog". That is the tragedy. Nobody likes to see anyone fall in this way.

WHY PEOPLE GET REACTED: FROGS IN A WELL

Here below Baba Himself points out why some get so reacted and resort to name calling.

Baba says, "You all know, where reasoning fails, vilification becomes the sole stock-in-trade. When you hear abuses from these frogs-in-the-well, you can take for granted that the grey matter in their frenzied brains have no functional residues left and that they have come to you only to convince you of their helpless and fey condition." (Subhasita Samgraha, part 3)

Baba's above teaching is that when anyone resorts to name calling it means they suffer from a lack of logic, reasoning and rationality. With no other recourse - i.e. devoid of any substantive reply - someone calls another "a dog" etc. That is Baba's prescribed teaching.

MUST FOLLOW DHARMA & NOT GET PERTURBED

In this below shloka, Baba guides us that those who are propogating AM ideology should not get swayed by public opinion or name calling, just we should follow the path of dharma and continue to serve Him.

                          Nindantu niitinipuńáh yadi vá stuvantu

Baba says, "“Let those well-versed in ethics criticize me or praise me, as they so desire..It makes little difference to me. Wise people will never withdraw from the path of ideology, the path which they accept as their ideal.”" (Namami Krsna Sundaram, Disc: 2)

Here again Baba guides us that those propagating His teachings should not be concerned about praise and censure.

Baba says, "“If I am too concerned with those who praise or censure me, I will not find time to do my real work. As I have come to this world only for a short period, my only concern should be to keep on doing the duty the Lord has assigned to me. And while doing this allotted duty, I should remember that I belong to Parama Puruśa. I have come from Him, and I will have to return to Him – and to do that, I must complete my allotted duty.”" (Subhasita Samgraha-12)

Next, Baba guides us that not to be frightened when propagating AM ideology.

Baba says, "In a jungle the number of tigers and lions is always few; the jackals far outnumber them. Yet in the jungle the tigers and lions reign supreme, not the jackals. The jackals are sure to howl, that is their nature; but the tigers and lions will not be frightened." (Ananda Vacanamrtam-6)

Finally in this last Hindi poem, Baba again reminds us not to be reacted by the belittling remarks of others while doing AM pracara. Only we are to follow dharma and serve society.

Hathi chale bazar, kutta bhonke hazar

When an elephant walks through the market, dogs start barking upon seeing the elephant, but the elephant remains unperturbed.

Sadhun ke durbhav nahin yadi ninde sansar

Even If the world abuses them, sadhus do not feel animosity or malice towards anyone, they go on serving all.

This is Baba's teaching which is published in so many Hindi discourses. And this same theme is expressed in international literature as well.

"The dog barks but the elephant moves on." (J.L Kipling)

Baba's overall teaching is that we should remain fearless and unaffected by dogmatic naysayers and name callers and continue to abide by the dictates of dharma.

In contrast, in the face of dogmatic opposition, shy and cowardly people run away or give up the pracara work. But we are to stand firm. Then and only then can we wipe out existing dogmas.

And till now this is the way things have gone in AM. When margiis were attacked for opposing the caste system etc, then those margiis and Dadas stood firm, and today we see how the caste system is on its last legs, crumbling before our very eyes. Time proves that those following dharma always get victory.

So our duty is to go on serving others by propagating Baba's teachings. Our goal is to serve the society, not to receive praise per se. Just we are to please Baba and not focus on who is praising or abusing us.

                                                 SUMMARY

Here are some final thoughts on this entire topic of name calling, and then you - the reader - will have to finally decide if Dada's approach of calling a margii "a dog" was proper or not.

1. In our Ananda Marga, logic and reasoning are appreciated as are open, dignified and respectful discussions.

2. Those who dream of turning AM into a dogmatic religion try to hush others and close their mouth by name calling. It is most unfortunate if one finds themselves part of this crowd of repressing the voice of others.

3. We must be vigilant not to allow anyone to shut another innocent person's mouth.

4. We should take pity on any Dada who calls a margii "a dog". It is a shame that any avadhuta has gotten so far removed and distanced from Baba's teaching. Such avadhuta is showing his real colour by such a comment.

5. Those doing pracara should be aware of this following formula.

a) Suppose you are doing Ananda Marga dharma pracara in the neighborhood of a Christian church. If the public is not paying attention to you and attending the church as usual, then those priests and church officials will not do anything against you. However, if you are encouraging people to follow AM and give up church dogma - and the common people are getting interested and leaving the church, then those priests and church officials will certainly attack you. That is the rule.

b) In those pre 1990 days when AM was preaching the gospel of Prout and warning people about the ills of the Indian government and capitalism, then the public was intensely interested in what was being said. Many of their supporters joined the Marga and understood the hypocrisy of the government. On a daily basis thousands and thousands were joining our various movements. That is why those days, the governmental leaders like Mrs Indira Gandhi launched numerous offensives against AM and attacked us viciously. However since 1990, our Marga has been involved in infighting. Thousands and thousands of people are not joining AM. For this reason, the government is not attacking us or our policies.

c) In the past, margiis had a lot of trust and respect in senior Dadas - thinking them to be perfect and beyond reproach - so margiis were not questioning the veracity of the Ananda Vanii issue. Hence those at the helm did not feel threatened and continued to implement their fake Ananda Vaniis. However, these days, due to the group fight, the mass of margiis have seen the conduct and true color of some senior Dadas. So they have begun questioning things in the Marga - including the Fake Ananda Vanii issue. In response, those at the helm have raised an offensive against anyone questioning the validity of fake Ananda Vaniis.

6. Finally, we should decide: In this present circumstance of name calling, who is the real dog?

                                         BABA'S BLESSING

Baba says, "Ananda Marga is fighting for satya (absolute truth) and unless and until we get total victory in both individual and collective life we must not stop the struggle. Compromising with injustice during battle is asatya [untruth]. Achieving only seventy-five percent satya and twenty-five percent asatya is no victory. Quinine suppresses the symptoms of malaria, while the disease still remains in the blood. But the disease must be destroyed. Therefore, until you banish asatya you shall not stop your battle." (Ananda Vacanamrtam-31)

Namaskar,
Nagendra

Note 1:                           WHAT SOME FORUMS ARE LIKE

It is unfortunate that in some of our Marga forums, run by sincere Margiis, open and free debate is not invited. Instead a repressive, closed-door atmosphere is created - like a dark closet. That mentality only invites dogma into our Ananda Marga. If you want more information about this please write me. Such networks are harming their own cause as their own actions undermine their purpose.

Note 2:                                   DADA THE GREAT

In his below cited email, you will see that Dada Yogakshemananda calls himself: Yogakshemananda Mahata, or 'Yogakshemananda The Great', as mahata means the great one etc.

So indeed it was Dada Yogakshemananda who called the margii "a dog" - and now we should all think: Really this Dada is great like he claims or is he like a dog.
