Way to Improve Sadhana

== WAY TO IMPROVE SADHANA ==

Namaskar,
In the life of each and every sadhaka - in the life of each and every A'nanda Ma'rgii - there is an inherent desire to make sadhana better and better, by His grace. This is the common feeling amongst all bhaktas.

To that end, we follow Baba's various do's and don'ts. Before sadhana we do half-bath, find a quiet place, do sastaunga pranam, and then sing and dance kiirtana before sitting for meditation.

However in this ultra-modern and technological era, where machines and gadgets often dominate our lives, there is the tendency just to listen to kiirtana via a stereo etc - and not sing ourselves. This can happen. Because that reliance upon technology can enter into every sector of our existence, including our devotional practices like kiirtana. So while living in this modern era we should be aware.

Because Baba's guideline is that to get the real benefit of kiirtana then one must sing - loudly.

"To proclaim the glories of Parama purus'a, the Supreme Consciousness, in a loud voice is termed 'kiirtanaa'. The Sam'skrta root verb kirtt means to 'utter something loudly so that others may also hear it'; thus kiirtanaa means to proclaim the glories of the Lord loudly for all to hear." (1)

Here again Baba delivers the same message, in slightly different language.

"kiirtanaa means to utter good words loudly; not mentally, nor in a whisper, but loud enough for everyone to hear. It is never done secretly, but always openly...So devotees will openly sing praises to Parama Purus'a. kiirtanaa means, as I said a little earlier, to sing the Lord's glory in a loud voice." (2)

As Baba explains above, part and parcel of "doing kiirtana" means singing kiirtana - not just listening to kiirtana. And best is to dance as well. In this way one can get 100% benefit: A unique devotional feeling overcomes the entire existence and one feels a deep sense of peace within. This we have all surely experienced.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND SINGING

As we know there is an underlying science behind all our spiritual-cum-devotional practices. In this respect, Baba guides us that by singing kiirtana we are engaging more of the body's organs than if we just simply listen. By singing, then the mouth, throat, tongue, and vocal chords are also involved. This enhances one's ability to focus on the kiirtana.

"At the time of kiirtanaa, the vocal cord sings, the ears hear, and the hands and feet dance, and thus all the organs are kept preoccupied with the divine. They are not allowed to move wherever they want but are kept engaged. There is a popular Indian superstition that when ghosts are not kept busy they break the necks of their prey. Similarly, if the sensory and motor organs are not kept engaged in the attainment of the divine, they may lead one astray. kiirtanaa is therefore most beneficial as it keeps all the organs fully engaged in a spiritual pursuit." (3)

Thus by singing kiirtana the mind is more engaged in the devotional practice of kiirtana than if one is just listening. And best is to dance also. By this way, sadhana will be improved. That is Baba's teaching.

DOES NOT TAKE EXTRA TIME

Some may say or think that they do not have time to stop and sing kiirtana. But the reply is that singing kiirtana itself need not take any extra time. One can sing kiirtana while doing mundane duties such as when cleaning the kitchen or when bathing etc. So singing kiirtana itself can be done frequently throughout the day. It is a way to spiritualise all our daily activities and then when we sit for sadhana we will automatically feel the difference. So while driving or walking or when preparing lunch, we can sing kiirtana. Actually, if we look carefully, we will come across so many moments in our day where we can sing kiirtana in a loud voice - thereby enhancing devotional life.

NO SHYNESS OR COMPLEX

One key point is that one should consider whether they have a "beautiful voice" or not. Doing proper kiirtana is not a matter of singing in tune or in a particular pitch. That is the important characteristic of kiirtana. When anyone sings kiirtana, Parama Purusa only thinks about the sweetness and sincerity of the devotee's heart - not the tune or melody. So no one should suffer from any type of complex about whether they have a good voice or not. That is not the point.

Rather we should always remember that we are only singing to please Parama Purusa. For this we simply need to awaken that devotional feeling that is naturally inside.

Ultimately between Parama Purusa and the bhakta there is an inherent relation of love - that is based solely on the heart. With this feeling one should sing kiirtana.

HE IS ALWAYS WITH YOU

By Baba's grace singing and dancing kiirtana brings tremendous bliss in the life and enhances sadhana. We should always remember that no matter what circumstance we may find ourselves in, always He is listening to our kiirtana. This is His unfathomable blessing upon us.

"Everywhere you are with Parama Purus'a, and never in this universe, nowhere in this universe, are you alone. So you are never helpless. Wherever you may be, do your kiirtanaa, 'Ba'ba' Na'ma Kevalam.' He is with you. You are never alone. Your are never weak. You are never helpless." (4)

KIIRTANA PURIFIES THE MIND FOR SADHANA

In various discourses Baba says that when the mind is not concentrated in sadhana then one should do kiirtana wholeheartedly and then sadhana will be much better.

"Now the time has come to manifest the glory of kiirtanaa. And I also want to say further that those who wish to attain spiritual progress in their sádhaná will have to do more and more kiirtanaa. By kiirtanaa, the mind becomes pure, and with this pure mind, one can do sádhaná. If the mind is made pure even for five minutes by kiirtanaa, then if you do sádhaná for only five minutes, your sádhaná will be very good – you will surely attain spiritual progress. And because of your spiritual progress, you will come closer and closer to the Supreme Consciousness, you will come in contact with His psychic waves. And in that state you will be able to render still better service to human beings, animals and plants, by means of Neohumanism. May you all be blessed." (5)

"THEIR SELF-APPLAUSE IS RATHER BORING FOR OTHERS"

"There are many people who are very fond of praising themselves by telling everyone what wonderful things they have done, but, as mentioned in this sloka, kiirtanaa is not for one's own self but for Hari. Even though people are taught to do kiirtanaa for Hari, they still make the mistake of praising themselves too much. Sometimes their self-praise is so intense that others are obliged to say, “Please stop praising yourself so much.” They forget that their self-applause is rather boring for others. Human beings should realize that no one likes to hear the self-praise of others." (6)

"MANY PEOPLE ARE BECOMING LUNATICS"

"These days many psychic diseases have appeared as a result of this mental complexity. Many people are committing suicide; many people are becoming lunatics. The reason is that people are unable to adjust with the various types of complexities in life."
"The human brain is limited, and its nerve cells also have a limited capacity: they cannot tolerate these growing complexities. kiirtanaa gives bliss to Parama Puruśa in the mental sphere, and it also brings joy to human beings both individually and collectively; it leads them on the path of welfare and frees them from all these complexities. It removes all the diseases of the intellect and allows people to think easily and in the proper way."
"So intelligent people should do kiirtanaa as much as possible. When people, due to psychic complexities, cannot find the solution to their difficulties and they are at a loss what to do, if they sit together at any place and do kiirtanaa wholeheartedly for a while, their psychic complexities will be removed and they will easily seize upon the solution to their problems." (7)

THE TERM "BABA" MEANS THE NEAREST AND DEAREST ONE

"Just to concentrate your mind during your occult practice, you must dance and sing kiirtanaa, because kiirtanaa is the best purifying agent. It purifies the mind, and its meaning is also very good. Its meaning is, “O Father, I am to take your name and your name only.” Bábá means “the nearest and dearest one”." (8)

Namaskar,
in Him,
Brahmeshvar

Baba

== THAT GRACIOUS GENERAL DARSHAN IN ANANDA NAGAR ==

Namaskar,
That general darshan of 31 December 1981, Baba was in a very gracious mood and the whole atmosphere was charged with His divine vibration. He was showering all with devotion and high spiritual bliss. Everybody was charmed by His magnificent presence, and accordingly Baba was especially gracious.

FAMILY PERSONS ALSO GIVEN THE PRACTICE

As some may recall that general darshan was the historic event when Baba showered His grace equally upon all: Females and males, family persons and monks. That day, He made it clear that in the spiritual realm there is no difference from one to the other. And this is exemplified by that general darshan as the end of 1981 when He graciously introduced the practice of avarta kiirtana-- to one and all.

Actually just in the few months prior, this style of avarta kiirtana was first given to Wts as part of their practice for madhura sadhana. So family people were not involved.

So, the morning General Darshan of 31 Dec of 1981 in Ananda Nagar stands as the first time in history of Ananda Marga that Baba blessed family margiis to participate in avarta kiirtana. Before that it was not allowed. Baba Himself had announced that up till then avarta kiirtana was not open to family margiis.

However during that special general darshan Baba blessed family margiis to also participate in this special type of kiirtana known as avarta kiirtana. So that was a first for us family margiis.

SECOND HISTORICAL POINT

Plus as many may surely remember, during that time in India females were not allowed to stand and dance during any Ananda Marga collective gathering - because of problems in the general society. So those days females were just sitting and chanting kiirtana; only males were dancing.

In overseas areas the situation was different, but in India prior to that day our respected sisters were just singing kiirtana from a sitting position. Certainly when they were alone, in the absence of the males and in the privacy of their own campus, then they were dancing kiirtana. But at collective gatherings females were not allowed to dance because of local social reasons.

But in Ananda Marg revolutionary things happen.

By Baba's grace on that very day of December 31 1981, females in India also began to dance kiirtana collectively on occasions such as at DMC or in the jagrti etc. Because at that same general darshan that Baba told that it will be best if everyone dances kiirtana. And He announced that: 'My daughters can also participate if they like'.

TWO REVOLUTIONARY PROGRAMS

So in that way at that historic general darshan two dramatic points unfolded: First family persons were given the practice of avarta kiirtana; and second, females were told to start dancing kiirtana during collective functions.

MORE ABOUT THE INTRODUCTION OF AVARTA KIIRTANA

Baba went on to explain Himself that avarta kiirtana is first meant to be done in the four directions and then up & down. So six directions total. He also told that the tune of the kiirtana must always be changed for each direction.

Since then avarta kiirtana has been done at all such Marga gatherings. Baba has also guided that during this practice of Avarta kiirtana the mind should be kept in sahasrara cakra, as that gives immense spiritual benefit.

So avarta kiirtana is very good for spiritual progress and it brings the sweet vibration of Parama Purusa in the mind.

AVARTA KIIRTANA: A SPECIAL TYPE OF DEVOTIONAL DANCE

As we all know, in our day to day lives devotion is very important and it is a great devotional tool to participate in Avarta kiirtana.

In contrast, during akhanda kiirtana one has to constantly walk around the Puja table and that type of circling around brings some disturbance also since one has to be aware of their external surroundings etc. But Avarta kiirtana is more serene and soft and gives a more sentient feeling.

THAT DEVOTIONAL CHARGE

Surely we can all remember that when Baba used to sit on the dais or in reporting or any BP meeting etc, then in His presence so many times that special type of kiirtana happened. And Baba was watching and showering His grace.

Indeed with that divine force everyone's mind was pointed and moving in one singular direction. In that way all kinds of righteous forces were united and Ananda Marga was moving like meteor.

BENEFITS OF AVARTA KIIRTANA

Among the many positive aspects of avarta kiirtana, we can say there are two broad-based, overarching benefits.

Firstly, for those who practice during daytime, they will gain spiritual energy and the quality of their sadhana will be enhanced.

Secondly, for those who practice at night, i.e. between 11:45p to 12:15a, then they will go to sleep with a distinctly positive mind-set. Bad dreams and nightmares will be wiped away and instead the mind will easily be goaded to mantra japa throughout the night. Plus, sleeping disorders like insomnia will be a thing of the past. Furthermore, upon waking the in morning one will feel fresh and spiritually vibrated.

Two more points to keep in mind to enhance the practice of avarta kiirtana. When practicing collectively then the mind should remain in sahasrara cakra and when practicing individually the system is to keep the mind in ajina cakra, though if you like you can have the mind in sahasrara cakra.

GOOD FOR MAKING THE LINK WITH BABA

We should remember the importance of spirituality and this avarta kiirtana is a good medium to practice in our day to day life to develop a more direct link with Baba and to have His grace. This is the very easy way to link up and step forward toward Parama Purusa, towards Baba.

Baba says, "Kiirtana will always remind you that you are the affectionate children of the Supreme. In kiirtana, there is no restriction regarding time, place or person, no distinction between educated and uneducated, between black and white. So do kiirtana, sing kiirtana, chant kiirtana whenever and wherever possible." (kiirtana is Panacea, 1982)

AVARTA KIIRTANA AND MADHURA SADHANA

Another fact is that avarta kiirtana is related with madhura sadhana. The basic program is: avarta kiirtana, kaoshikii, tandava, and madhura sadhana. And it is all done during the midnight hours-- after 11:15pm.

BABA'S REVOLUTIONARY WAY

Earlier many other gurus did not allow family margiis to participate in such a practice, and in times of the vedas then so many dogmas were in vogue. Such as females were not even allowed to listen to the omnkara mantra - otherwise their ears would get blocked with molten lead in order to make them completely and permanently deaf. That was the punishment. Baba is such a Divine Guru that He has graciously blessed one and all and He has given various discourses to show that females have equal rights in all the realms including spiritual. This was a revolutionary step.

In all the dogmatic religions females do not have right to salvation. But in Ananda Marga females are equally given opportunity. So many new and dharmic practices came for females such as: Kapalika sadhana, becoming acarya etc.

Throughout the history there was terrible exploitation against both family persons and females - especially in the spiritual sphere. Ananda Marga is that special path where all have equal rights and opportunity.

MORE SPECIAL QUOTES ON KIIRTANA

Baba says, "Whatever worldly difficulties might obstruct your path, the best positive or auxiliary force is kiirtana. kiirtana helps a devotee to accelerate the speed towards the hub of the universe. Kiirtana will help you in all circumstances; if any mental trouble arises, kiirtana will help you." (Kiirtana is Panacea, 1982)

Baba says, Kiirtana will help you in all circumstances, in all possible ways. If people do kiirtana with distinct expression of the mantra, their mouths become pure, their tongues become pure, their ears become pure, their whole bodies become pure - and when so many parts of the body become pure, the atma (self) also becomes pure. By kiirtana you become as pure as if you have taken a 'holy dip in the Ganges'." (Kiirtana is Panacea, 1982)

Namaskar,
Karmeshvar

Purport:

Baba, even today Your sweet aroma remains lingering on that path -  on the path which You have traveled. Baba, the songs which You sang so beautifully in tune and rhythm, those very songs are ever-present in the deep core of my heart. Their lingering resonance still vibrates my entire being.

O' my dearmost Baba, I cannot ever forget Your blissful tales; it is impossible for me to forget. Your divine advent in my mind is far more significant than hundreds of lives of sadhana, & its penance. Baba, You are the most meaningful thing in my life. You have graciously presented Yourself after my hundreds of lives of searching and longing.

Baba, even if You do not remain close to me, my mind does not go far from You. By Your grace, I always remain ensconced in Your blissful ideation. Baba, keeping all my longings for You in my heart, I will go on singing Your divine songs day and night. Baba, You have made me understand this truth: That to do any extraordinary task is impossible for those who have a dry heart. Only those with innate love for You will be able to climb over the insurmountable mountains. Others cannot because in each and every sphere of life Your grace is everything. Without that nothing is possible. Baba, by Your own qualities You have bound me with Your divine love; Baba You always stay with me; You always keep me under Your shelter.

Baba, Your sweet and charming aroma keeps me thinking about You constantly...

== BABA STORY: DIVINE POWER OF KIIRTAN ==

Preview: This is a story about the great power and tremendous force of Baba Nam Kevalam kiirtan. It saved us from getting stuck, and perhaps even drowning, in a dangerous river.

Namaskar,
By His divine grace, I was present when our Beloved Baba first introduced Baba Nam Kevalam kiirtan mantra. It was 08 Oct 1970, when Baba was on tour and staying in Amjharia (Palamu Dist, Jharkhand). When I think back today - the entire event is crystal-clear in my mind. I can never forget that blissful occasion and the absolutely incredible scene that took place afterwards.

At the time, I was an LFT teaching in an Ananda Marga school in Medinii Nagar (Daltonganj). There were 12 students in our children's home who attended the school. And each day after teaching class, I was the supervisor of the children's home.

BABA DHARSHAN IN AMJHARIA

One day, DTS Dada told me to go to the Baba darshan in Amjharia along with all the children's home boys. It was under the direct order of DTS Dada that I went along with my students.

We had a smooth journey to Amjharia where we spent blissful days in Baba's divine presence. This marked the time Baba first gave the Baba Nam Kevalam kiirtan. It was completely new. The kiirtan was extremely vibrating and it super-charged my body and mind. I did as much kiirtan as I could, as did my students.

After the program, Bhukti Pradhanji gave me the direction to go back to the children's home with all my students.

EMBARKING ON THE JOURNEY HOME

From there I walked to the concrete road to catch the bus, but the bus was not available. Then by Baba's grace I saw one truck and I waved my hand and requested the truck to stop. Baba heard my call and the driver stopped.

It should be understood that usually one has to wait hours and hours before a truck will stop and offer a ride. The drivers are busy and concerned about crime. But this time a driver stopped immediately. That is why I say it is Baba's grace.

Taking Guru mantra, I requested the driver to take me and all my students to our destination. The driver readily agreed; we were all very pleased to get in the truck and start the journey home.

DANGER AHEAD: BRIDGE COLLAPSED

We had driven for some time when vehicles coming from the opposite direction warned us that up ahead in Latehar, the bridge was damaged so there was no way to cross. We were told that we must turn back and take a long detour as no vehicles could get through the river.

Hearing this, the truck driver became concerned and scared. He requested us to get down from the truck as he was going to return back and take a different route.

INSPIRED TO MOVE AHEAD

We all told in one voice that, "No, we have to go to Daltonganj at any cost. We are coming from a grand kiirtan program with Baba and He will take care!"

By Baba's grace, we were in a blissful state due to the strong kiirtan vibration. Indeed we had been singing Baba Nam Kevalam kiirtan the whole time in the truck. In that deeply inspired mood we firmly told and assured the driver that, "Nothing bad is going to happen - let's cross!"

We requested the driver to move on ahead: "Let's go via this route and make it across the river. Your vehicle will make it!" With our firm resolve we convinced the driver and he agreed.

SCENE AT THE RIVERSIDE

It was not long before we  came close to the river. The bridge was washed out due to heavy rains and we would have to drive through the river. The river was around 3 - 4 feet deep and had a muddy bottom.

Our driver looked up and down the bank of the river and saw that many vehicles were on the riverbanks unable to cross the river. He told, "No, this is too dangerous a situation. This truck will not make it across."

We enthusiastically encouraged him and said that we will make it across. The driver requested us to get down to reduce the weight. He told, "I will drive across while you walk or swim across. So please get down."

We told that him, "If we get down, then you won't be able to cross - you will surely get stuck. We will sing kiirtan in the truck and with that force you will cross. If you try and cross alone then you will meet the same fate as the other vehicles that got stuck."

We were speaking with full confidence and conviction and the driver became convinced and said, "Let's try!"

Up until this point in our journey, we had been singing kiirtan the entire time. The Baba Nam Kevalam kiirtan was so powerful and the vibration was very intoxicating. Baba was showering His grace. And the whole time the driver was listening and feeling the vibration, so he believed us.

KIIRTAN SAVES THE DAY

Suddenly, the driver felt confident that we would make it across.

Then he drove into the river - people had told us not to go and they did their best to discourage us - but we did not budge or pay them any attention. The truck was now in the river and we heightened the volume of our kiirtan and began chanting more and more loudly with greater surrender to Baba. The current slowed and the flow of water reduced. By His grace the truck was navigating the waters well. Everyone on either side of the river was watching. We sang more and more loudly.

Then by Baba's grace we reached the far bank and drove up to safety.

Seeing us cross successfully, other trucks and buses that were waiting to cross got the courage to drive through the river. As they attempted, again the flow of water increased - seeing this they reversed their course. It was not possible to cross so they again waited by the bank of the river. We could see them from the other side.

Watching this, the truck driver became more amazed and thrilled by the fact that we had made it across and others could not.

SWEETS FOR EVERYONE

AND REACHING HOME SAFELY

The driver quickly purchased sweets and distributed them among all the children. Then he gave us back the money we had given him. He said it would be sinful to accept that money. He saw first-hand that the Baba Nam Kevalam kiirtan is very powerful and that we were doing dharmic work.

After hours of driving we reached Medinii Nagar (Daltonganj). The driver asked us our exact address and he kindly dropped us off directly in front of the school by late evening.

REALISING HIS GRACE

When departing the driver was very, very happy. He said, "Today I saw and realised God's grace." He then did namaskar and drove off.

Namaskar,
in Baba
Vishvanath

APPENDIX:

KIIRTAN DISPELS ALL KINDS OF CALAMITIES

The above story graphically displays the power of our kiirtan mantra. When chanted sincerely with devotion, it can eliminate all kinds of disasters.

Baba says, "Now, whatever might be the physical miseries – be they natural or man-made – if people collectively chant kiirtana, the calamities are dispelled then and there. In case of natural calamities like flood, famine, drought or epidemic, or man-made calamities, miseries and tortures – if kiirtana is chanted with maximum sincerity, it will bring direct relief in no time. (16 May 1982, Kolkata, Kiirtana Dispels Calamities)

And that is exactly what we saw in the above story. By chanting kiirtan they were able to pass the otherwise uncrossable river.

Certainly, sadhakas of highest devotion - ragatmika bhakti - sing only for Parama Purusa, not for averting disasters per se. While those in a different flow may sing to avert disasters. And that is fine at least they are singing the Lord's name. We have to remember that this world is colorful and that there are all kinds and levels of aspirants on the planet.

In the above story, however, all were singing with full faith and surrender to Guru - there was no other idea in the mind.

We should all pay heed to His below directives and chant kiirtan whenever and wherever possible - no matter how little time we may have.

Baba says, "If you have even only one minute’s time, do kiirtan for one minute. If even two or three people gather together, they can do kiirtan collectively; if one thousand people assemble together, then also they can do kiirtan." (17 May 1982, Kolkata, Serve the Supreme by Kiirtana)

Baba says, "Instead of wasting your time in gossiping, in useless idle pursuits, you should do kiirtana even for two minutes or five minutes, whenever you get the opportunity. It is foolish to waste one’s valuable time in gossiping." (15 May 1982, Kolkata, Kiirtana: The Panacea for all Afflictions)

Difference Between Kiirtan and Prabhat Samgiita

== THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN KIIRTAN AND PRABHAT SAMGIITA ==

(Note: This is the second letter in this series. A link to the initial letter on this topic is appended below. - Eds)

Namaskar,
"When Baba began composing songs He beautifully brought forth the true devotional expressions of our Ananda Marga sadhana. That is the inherent charm of Prabhat Samgiita. They purely reflect a bhakta's heart-felt feeling with Parama Purusa."

Yes, I agree wholeheartedly; and, with the recent observance of Prabhat Samgiita Day (14 Sep) here are some further reflections about Baba's divine compositions. Please share your thoughts as well.

PRABHAT SAMGIITA: THE MISSING LINK

By giving Prabhat Samgiita, Baba has beautifully filled one missing link in our devotional approach and sadhana program.

After half-bath and preparing oneself in the physico-psychic way, then one link is needed before starting kiirtan. The intimate sharing of one's personal devotional feeling is needed. And that link is Prabhat Samgiita.

CONTRASTING KIIRTAN AND PRABHAT SAMGIITA

As we all know, kiirtan itself is the expression of one idea: Highlighting the glory of Parama Purus'a. And true kiirtan is to be sung out loud - collectively, or at least loud enough so others can hear. Of course, all Ananda Margiis yearn to sing His name and dance kiirtan. And our kiirtan mantra is itself a siddha mantra. Certainly, we are blessed to have our Baba-Nam-Kevalam kiirtan.

At the same time, as sadhakas we are not wholly satisfied with just the singing of kiirtan. Because every devotee also wants to express some personal, devotional, sentimental feeling of the heart to their most loving Parama Purusa. Because He is the Dearest One of the heart, the Heart of hearts, and the Soul of souls.

So it is natural that a sadhaka wants to pour or open their whole heart. And this can only be done by sitting in a lonely place and singing to Him directly and talking to Him. And in this way Prabhat Samgiita is the perfect medium.

Kiirtan is more of a collective approach, or we can say that it is even a little higher because there is only one idea: Baba's glory is everything. That is the one central theme of our kiirtan.

But, as we know, in devotional life a wide range of personal feelings come in the heart and mind of the bhakta and those need to be expressed and goaded towards Parama Purusa. Often it is difficult to express those sentimental feelings in a collective setting. Every sadhaka has their own way in which they wish to communicate their personal longing for Him. It depends upon a person's devotional standard and relation with Him. Some devotees have a special intimate relation with Parama Purusa and some practice another type of bhava with Parama Purusa. It varies from one sadhaka to the next.

And the various Prabhat Samgiita compositions enable on to express these different types of feelings towards the Lord - towards Baba. That is why Prabhat Samgiita stands as an ideal personal practice for each sadhaka - where kiirtan is more applicable to a collective flow.

This is the essential difference between bhajans (i.e. Prabhat Samgiita) and kiirtan. So many sentimental feelings and so many tales of the heart cannot get expressed in the collective flow.

PRABHAT SAMGIITA: AN INTIMATE EXPERIENCE

So Baba has given Prabhat Samgiita as that intimate link between the bhakta and Parama Purusa. It is the ideal practice for sadhakas to express their unique personal feelings for Him. It is a way for devotees to feel Him more close.

Although philosophically, every devotee will admit that 'Parama Purusa, You are infinite'; but at the same time, in their heart, they will speak "Toma're ca'i ye ekante...": O my Dearmost, I want to have Your closeness in an isolated place. O' infinite Parama Purusa, I want to have You in a very personal way - in a secluded place - so I can open my heart, and share y feelings with You. O ' Baba, You are mine and mine alone.

Hence although Parama Purusa is infinite, but true devotees do not feel that He is infinite. They feel that: 'He is mine and mine alone'.

In that case, there is a deep need to communicate their inner feeling with Him, otherwise how can there be intimacy. Without intimacy, one cannot grow in sadhana. Such a feeling is devotion. And that only comes with the pouring of the heart to Him - He who is most close.

In that case without bhajan type of songs, and especially without Prabhat Samgiita, there is no way to express the feeling fo the heart. So that is why Prabhat Samgiita is that much needed missing link. Sadhakas have always had an inner-heart felt feeling for Him, Baba fulfilled that gap by giving expression to those feeling with His compositions of Prabhat Samgiita. That is indeed His special gift which He began on 14 September 1982.

Namaskar,

"Toma're khunjiya' gechi vane vane maner kon'e khunjiya' dekhini..." (2807)

Purport:

Baba I went on searching You in the external world, in the so-called holy lands, in the forest, in the cave of the mountain, and so many places, but I never tried to search You in the corner of my mind. I never looked there.

I observed many types of penance and took trouble to travel to the various "holy lands" in search of You; and I remained engaged in external worship using the traditional paraphernalia with lots of ostentation. All the while, I never understood that You are remaining so close to me - this I never thought. O' Baba, O' Divine Entity, You are always sitting in the mind and You love me very deeply and intimately. You shower Your love on me day and night.

What I understood based on my little intellect, I tried to execute with my full strength and vigour. I remained lost in various attachments. I also searched You through exploration of knowledge - remaining busy with pen, paper and ink. By this way, my time was wasted. And I could never catch hold of You. Now, by Your causeless grace, I understand that You are always hiding in my mind. Your divine flute is always resonating. Baba, You are always gracious...

Baba

"Tava preran'a'y puspit holo shus'ka marur yato taru..." (PS 702)

Purport:

Baba, You are the most magnificent One. By Your divine grace, all the trees & vegetation in the dry, dusty maru (desert) have started to bloom and flower. By Your unfathomable grace, the fragrant flower blossoms have transformed the dead and lifeless desert into a golden, colorful, and charming paradise - overflowing with sweetness and full of life. Baba, You can do anything and everything.

Baba, You have done the impossible. That which I could never imagine happening, and that which even today is difficult for me to believe happening, that impossible feat You have done. You have made my broken heart new again - full of love for You. With Your divine compassion, You have filled my heart with devotion and propelled me forward on the path of sadhana. Baba, it is only Your grace.

Baba, You are unparalleled. You are the embodiment of everything & You go everywhere. On the one side You are stationary; yet, at the same time, You move very, very fast. Baba, with the madhu meru (mountain of sweetness), You stir and vibrate the jyotisamudra (effulgent ocean). Baba, You have flooded the spiritual realm with the love and attraction for You.

Baba, by Your grace everything has changed; my sleeping, sunken heart has become full of devotion. Baba, I love You. Your grace is everything...

== KIIRTAN AND GANDHARVA LOKA ==

Namaskar,

Baba says, "The following describes how and to what degree human beings are aware about their own unit consciousness (Shiva'tma). As well as how they come in contact with their shiva'tma."

"For example, it is just like when one looks in the mirror then one does not see their real self, but rather a reflection of that. Or it is similar to when one awakens from a deep sleep then they can recall only part of their dream, and some aspects of their dream they cannot remember. Or perhaps, more precisely, they can only remember a reflection of their dream - not the dream itself."

"In contrast, there are other occasions where one looks at their own reflection in the water and they can clearly see their reflected image. But still that is not one's entire being. It remains but a reflection. Just like if one sees a reflection of a mango in the water then that is just a reflection and not the real mango."

"In reality only we come in contact with our unit consciousness when we sing kiirtan and some bliss comes. Then we come in contact with our shiva'tma."

"So in the spiritual field one comes in contact with their own unit consciousness after singing spiritually vibrated music like kiirtan or bhajans. For this reason, such type of devotional chanting or singing is highly essential in the life of a sadhaka. And when one comes in momentary contact with their own unit consciousness while singing kiirtan this is known as Ghandharva loka. One can only feel the bliss of kiirtan when their mind reaches into Ghandharva loka." (Shabda Cayanika - part 26)

We should all pay heed to Baba's guideline and be vigilant to sing and dance kiirtan regularly.

Namaskar,
Vishvashanti

Is Parama Purusa Looking for Praise

Baba

"Tumi phuleri buke madhu d'ha'lile, ka'nt'a'te gola'p phot'a'le..." (PS 3346)

Purport:

Baba, while hiding behind the scenes You go on doing all everything - You are the Doer of each and every work. While keeping Yourself invisible, You manage all the works. Baba, You have filled the hearts of the flowers with nectar. From the thorns, You make the roses blossom.

In the cold winter season You provide the soothing warmth of a fire. In the burning heat of summer Your touch is like the refreshing, coolness of sandalwood. Baba according to Your desire, You go on doing all the work. Sometimes You make me cry*, sometimes You make me laugh & smile. All kinds of things You do.

Sometimes with the attraction of Your love You pull me close. Sometimes after looking towards You, even then You do not give any response. Just You overlook the situation and ignore me. And other times without my awareness, You attract me with Your divine charm and love.

Baba You are everywhere. You are hiding in the heat of the fire. And at the same time You are in the water vapor that floats in the sky. O' the peacock of my mind, You go on making the play of shadow and effulgence.

Baba, You go on doing everything secretly and invisibly; & indeed You are doing everything; it is Your grace...

*Cry= As everybody knows, there are various causes of crying. When people are very, very happy then they cry. And also when sadhakas are in a deep state of devotional longing feeling the pain of separation, then in that case also they cry. In the above song both the conditions apply.

== IS PARAMA PURUSA LOOKING FOR PRAISE ==

Namaskar,
As Ananda Margiis we do all kinds of devotional practices in our day to day life, such as sadhana, kiirtana and singing bhajans etc.

And if we stop and think a moment then we will realise that what we are doing in all our practices is calling and praising Parama Purusa. By singing His name, reciting our dhyana mantra, and singing devotional songs, we are calling out to Him - glorifying Him. That is the essence of our practice.

THEIR MISTAKEN PERSPECTIVE

Of course, true bhaktas feel in their heart that "Whatever Parama Purusa wants us to do is fine - that will be blissful." So there is no concern or question for devotees. Bhaktas just want to please Him.

But there are some who take this in the wrong direction: Those of a more crude mentality think that Parama Purusa is longing to be praised.

Such persons think that, "Just as I like to be praised, in the same way Parama Purusa also likes to be praised, and that is why we do all these practices like sadhana, kiirtan, and bhajans. Because He is wishing to be praised." Such is their mode of thinking.

Essentially they are projecting their human desire to be praised unto Parama Purusa.

THEIR ACCUSATION

But it does not stop there.

They furthermore levy an accusation against Parama Purusa as well. They contest, "If we humans hanker praise then Parama Purusa warns us that we will become small-minded and degenerated...."

Baba says, "Those people, by hankering after others’ praise, become worse than ordinary people." (SS-12, How an Ideal Person Should Live)

Such persons continue, "...So how interesting it is that if Parama Purusa wishes to be praised then everything is fine and well. Is this not a double-standard? The very thing we are told not to do by Him - i.e. hanker after praise - is the very thing that Parama Purusa Himself desires."

In this way they accuse Parama Purusa of creating a double-standard: What humans should not do, He does.

PARAMA PURUSA DOES NOT HAVE ANY WANT

As His disciples, whatever we may feel in our heart, we have to be able to properly reply to the query or accusation, that "Parama Purusa is looking for praise." What should be our reply.

Firstly, one should have this logical understanding firmly set in the mind:

Parama Purusa has created this whole universe. He always remains in nityananda (eternal bliss). He does not need anything from anyone. Parama Prakrti is at His calling and can provide whatever He needs. Indeed Parama Purusa does not need humans to do anything for Him, including praise Him.

Baba says, "“O Lord, Thou art the creator of this universe. This universe is full of gems and jewels. So do You require anything from a poor man like me? Nothing. All the gems and jewels, everything, all the wealth of the world, belongs to You. And Your grhińii, Your spouse, is Mahámáyá. She is Your spouse, and according to Your order and desire She will supply You with anything. In Nagpur You may say, ‘Oh, Mahámáyá, I want a mango,’ and then and there it will be furnished. Mahámáyá is Your spouse, so there cannot be any want, there cannot be any shortage in Your store." (Ananda Vacanamrtam - Part 3, Prańáma Mantra)

So that is the first reply: Parama Purusa is Bliss Personified and complete unto Himself. This whole expressed cosmos is His creation and He has no want.

THE REAL EQUATION

Now comes the real question at hand. Why is it that Parama Purusa guides us to repeat His name, sing His glory and meditate on Him. What is the reason for this. Why is He the focal point of all our practices?

The answer of course is not that it is because He is longing to be praised. Rather His desire is that we should progress on the path of spirituality. He wants that His progeny should be liberated. And the way to do that is to think of Him.

The science at work is: "As you think so you become."

He wants that His progeny should progress and this is the only way: To think about His Supreme Self. If one thinks about their own petty self then they will degenerate. Whereas if anyone thinks about His greatness and sings His praises, then they will become like Him. That is the special quality of Parama Purusa.

Baba says, "The characteristic of Parama Puruśa is that whosoever takes His ideation, become as vast as Him by His grace. “Brhatvadá Brahma Brḿhańatvád Brahma”. The word Brahma means very great. Is He only great? No, He is great, Himself and can make others great; so, He is called Brahma. When, by taking His ideation human mind becomes like that of Parama Puruśa." (Subháśita Saḿgraha Part 19, The Supreme Aesthetic Science and the Cult of Devotion)

That then is the inner secret. The unique characteristic of Parama Purusa is that He can make others great and that happens when people think of Him. When anyone ideates on Him, then they take on His divine qualities and become great.

So there is no question of Parama Purusa wishing to be praised. Rather He wants that we should sing His glories and think of Him so that we can attain liberation. By ideating on His divine Self we become like Him, free of all bondages and perfect in all respects: I.e. liberated.

BABA'S BLESSING

Here I close with Baba's following blessing: By thinking and ideating on Him - and thereby coming closer - by His grace He removes all our samskaras and grants salvation.

Baba says, "The closer one moves towards Parama Puruśa the more one is freed of one’s sins and thus the purer one becomes." (AV-6, Nityánanda and Liilánanda)

Namaskar,
Giriish

Note: THE BENEFIT OF KIIRTAN

By singing His name and chanting His glory then we keep away from mundane distractions and proceed along the path of pure spirituality, by His grace.

Baba says, "At the time of kiirtana, the vocal cord sings, the ears hear, and the hands and feet dance, and thus all the organs are kept preoccupied with the divine. They are not allowed to move wherever they want but are kept engaged. There is a popular Indian superstition that when ghosts are not kept busy they break the necks of their prey. Similarly, if the sensory and motor organs are not kept engaged in the attainment of the divine, they may lead one astray. Kiirtana is therefore most beneficial as it keeps all the organs fully engaged in a spiritual pursuit." (Ananda Vacanamrtam - 8, Sadhana, abhidhyana, kiirtana)

******************************************
How to Judge

Baba says, "We deduce conclusions just from whatever we observe in this external phenomenal world. We should try to see the subtle cause behind the crude phenomenal world, but we do not see it. For instance, a particular person stole something, and when we say, 'Thief ! Thief!' people will start beating him. If we try to inquire about the reasons for the theft, we may come to know that he had been hungry for the last three days. And how are we treating him? We are beating him rather than giving him food. So we should think and try to find the noumenal cause behind the phenomenal world. If he was hungry and so stole, then we are more responsible for that theft than he, because we failed to build up society, so that he had to remain hungry. So we must see, and try to find the noumenal cause behind the prima facie observable world. If we are intelligent beings, possessing intellect, we must discover the noumenal cause. It is not proper to arrive at conclusions from mere observation of outward expressions."

"In some places today, a person's hand is cut off if he engages in stealing. With a little thought it can be seen that this is not at all a humanistic recourse to eliminate stealing. We must seek the noumenal cause behind all actions." (AV-12, p. 155-56)

== RE: BABA STORY: POWER OF KIIRTAN ==

Namaskar,
I read the two recent posts, "History of Kiirtan" and "Baba Story: Power of Kiirtan", that wonderfully describe when Baba first gave kiirtan in Amjhariya on 08 October 1970.

Here are some of my thoughts on the those two kiirtan stories.

REFLECTIONS ON THOSE BABA STORIES

The whole story of how Baba first created kiirtan was not known to me, so it was really wonderful to read how He prepared for it and took the occasion away from the Organisational WT vibration, to the devotee margiis area in a remote place. So subtle and beautiful this very thing seems to me, and meaningful.

The way the story is told by the young LFT who took his home children along with him to that place is full of meaning too. Those young participants will always carry that experience in their hearts and influence many others to sing and dance this new Mantra. To sing it in their homes and villages and towns throughout their lives.

To realise the siddhis Baba bestowed in this kiirtan mantra and the effect of that singing on the people, the environment, and other beings on that occasion, helps one to realise Baba's awe inspiring powers to bring a new wave of spiritual vibration to the planet through the singing and dancing of this Baba Nam Kevalam mantra. How it could uplift the minds of anyone and everyone.

OUR OWN PERSONAL EXPERIENCES

I am sure that every Margi has stories to tell where they have experienced this. I certainly have several such stories from the days when Baba was in jail and where I lived, a group of us used to go to the city to do kiirtan through the streets at lunchtime amongst all the people, or at evening when people were leaving their work to catch buses home, we would be in a park with our Ananda Marga banner, and they used to gather mesmerised, and many would join in.

One time while engaged in singing and dancing, I opened my eyes and saw that everything, the bricks in a big building some distance away that was within my vision, seemed to be vibrating in the rhythm, and the trees nearby, were moving also in this mystic rhythm, somehow pulsating with our flow as we moved round and round. I can never forget seeing  this phenomena, though i kept it to myself at the time.  It seemed too difficult to describe this thing in a way people could catch the experience I had felt.

Another time we had a pracar stall at an education Fair and some of us went upstairs to this big empty room in this very old building and started up a strong kiirtan. Our singing attracted many people to come up and see what was going on.  After an hour or so of this, I looked around and their were hundreds of people singing and dancing and looking so blissed out, and more and more people kept coming until the huge space was full, and the whole building started to sway to the rhythm and the mood became so ecstatic. I doubt any of those people there that day, total strangers, would ever forget that experience. That would have been in the mid seventies, when His blissful vibration was extremely intense in the world and many were attracted, but didn't know what to make of it at the time. Some stayed and some went on with their lives, but were affected somehow.

WITH BABA'S LOVE EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE

In your story about making their way home after the time with Baba and discovering the bliss of kiirtan, in the part about the bridge being flooded on the way home, I had the feeling that under ordinary circumstances it would be simply madness to attempt such a crossing, having seen the absolute power of a river in flood, but under the spell of that kiirtan vibration the feeling came that while thinking of Baba and His Love, absolutely everything is possible, and with surrender to Him our own fears disappear, not because we expect miracles , but having full trust in Him, we can proceed unafraid. It is simply Baba's grace.

in His ever blissful kiirtan flow,
Ananda Mayii

Note 2: REFLECTION ON LETTERS

I find the articles are very much more clear in their purpose and expression.  I appreciate this very much, because your content is so important and helpful to think about, and in my case, i feel this is where my own thinking gets some clarification and confirmation and i get ideological education, i really long for. Such discussions add so much to my own thinking processes as i know i need to understand so much more of Baba's intentions for us all through our Ananda Marga if we are to carry it forward in our life time.

Baba

"Toma'ke ceyechi ceyechi sab ka'je..."  (P.S. #187)

Purport:

Baba, I desire to see You in all my works. Baba, please grace me so that no matter what I am doing, always Your image of varabhaya mudra is reflecting in my mind. I long for Your close proximity in all my actions: physical, psychic and spiritual. Baba, by Your divine grace Your sweet, charming, & attractive form is always floating in my heart.

O' my innermost, I have come onto this earth to remain engaged in serving You. Day after day, I will go on moving towards You-- blissfully floating in Your divine ideation.

Baba, by Your grace whenever I propagate even a wee-bit of Your glory then always Your blissful presence appears in my mind and Your divine tune resonates in my heart. Baba You are so gracious.

Baba, when doing dhyan in the lonely night under the moon and the stars, then You always grace me. And the peacock of my mind spreads its colorful feathers and dances in inexplicable joy. Baba, by getting You my mind
dances in bliss.

O' my dearmost Baba, whenever I do anything You always bless me by coming in my mental temple. Always You remain along with me. It is Your causeless grace. Baba, You are the most loving One...

== BABA STORY: POWER OF KIIRTAN ==

Preview: This is the story of how powerful Baba Nam Kevalam kiirtan is that it saved us from getting stuck, if not drowning, in a dangerous river.

Namaskar,
By His divine grace, I was present when our Beloved Baba first introduced Baba Nam Kevalam kiirtan mantra. It was 08 Oct 1970, when Baba was on tour and staying in Amjharia (Palamu Dist, Jharkhand). When I think back today - the entire event is
crystal-clear in my mind. I can never forget that blissful occasion and the absolutely incredible scene that took place afterwards.

At the time, I was an LFT teaching in an AM school in Medinii Nagar (Daltonganj).

It was totally new. The kiirtan was totally vibrating and it super-charged my body and mind.

We drove for some time when vehicles coming from the opposite direction warned us that up ahead in Latehar, the bridge was damaged so there was no way to cross. We were told that we must turn back and take a long detour as no vehicles could get through the river.

Hearing this, the truck driver became concerned and scared. He requested us to get down from the truck as he was going to return back and take a different route.

INSPIRED TO MOVE AHEAD

We all told in one voice that, "No we have to go to Daltonganj at any cost. We are coming from a grand kiirtan program with Baba and He will take care!"

By His grace, we were in a blissful state due to the strong kiirtan vibration.

We told that him, "If we get down, then you can't cross - you will surely get stuck.

Namaskar,
Vishvanath

Of course, sadhakas of highest devotion - ragatmika bhakti - sing only for Parama Purusa, not for averting disasters per se.

By His grace we should all pay heed to His below directives and chant kiirtan whenever and wherever possible - no matter how little time we may have.

This appendix has been written by Ram Chandra.

Who is blessed one?

Baba says, "The man who is intelligent should, from his very childhood, move along the path of proto-spirituality. The sooner a man starts and moves along this path of psycho-spirituality, the better it is. He is the blessed one."
(Ananda Vacanamrtam-12, p.75)

Note: With the start of this spring season we should once again reflect how Baba has graced us by providing us all the tools and teachings for moving along the path of spirituality. So again with renewed vigor we should be more firm and more sincere in our adherence to Sixteen Points.

== HISTORY OF KIIRTAN ==

Namaskar,
The upcoming program of 08 October is a historical event: It denotes the day Baba first gave the Baba Nam Kevalam kiirtan mantra at Amjhariya in 1970. And this is the story of that occasion.

WHY AMJHARIYA WAS THE BEST PLACE

Actually, at the time Amjhariya was the ideal spot to initiate kiirtan as other places might led to more resistance. Baba would have had to spend a lot more time and energy persuading and convincing jinani wts. Why? Because they were essentially thinking that Baba is Guru - not more than that. They could not comprehend that Baba is Parama Purusa incarnate. In India accepting someone as Guru is very common - every family has one or another type of guru. Whereas accepting someone as the Almighty is a totally different matter. That was especially difficult for those who were in key posts in Ananda Marga.

HOW SOME DADAS OPPOSED KIIRTAN

The proof of this is that later when kiirtan had spread all around, it was still seen that  opposition came from many wts in key posts. Many of those workers left the organisation, other wts openly criticised the Baba Nam Kevalam kiirtan, and some simply refrained from doing kiirtan at all for 6 months or even 1 or 2 years. Such was the case with dadas like Ac Vijayananda Avt and Ac Tadbhavananda Avt. They refused to sing or dance kiirtan for months or even a year or more.

Indeed in His book, Shraddhainjali, Ac Tadbhavananda Avt has described and clearly put in print how he was frustrated and upset by the Baba Nam Kevalam kiirtan and he took a stance against it. Please read this following excerpt from dadaji's book.

"This recitation of Baba Nam Kevalam was quite new to me and to other margiis who had not been in Ranchi. Baba was knowing the problem of my mind...Baba asked how we liked the Kiirtan of Baba Nam Kevalam. He particularly pointed out towards me. I spoke in a blunt way: "Baba, there are already many Kiirtan, such as Hare Krsna, Hari Rama and so on, so our Baba Nam Kevalam will create more controversies"." (Ac Tadbhavananda Avt, Shraddhainjali, p.p. 74-5)

It is apparent from his expression that Ac Tadbhavananda was not in favour of the Baba Nam Kevalam kiirtan; he even confronted Baba in person about it.

BABA'S DIVINE DRAMA

Knowing all this, we can understand how Amjhariya was the best place for Baba to introduce kiirtan. Furthermore, Baba did it with no wts present. Those margiis were along with Baba  in Amjhariya at that time knew that whatever Baba told was for their welfare and they followed without any if or but. More details about this are shared below.

As we all know, Baba's plan is to grace the masses  - all should be benefited by the advent of Taraka Brahma. So He had to give something for everybody. For that purpose He gave kiirtan and Amjhariya was the best place. So Baba made the schedule and reached there.

In His divine drama, He told others He was going there "to take rest" and that there will not be any organisational work. He said that the office flow in Ranchi headquarters was too busy and that He needed to rest in a calm place.

Usually when Baba goes anywhere there is reporting, general darshan, PC, and all kinds of committee meetings etc. That was the standard manner. But none of that was scheduled at Amjhjariya. It was announced that Baba was going there to rest.

WHO WAS ALLOWED TO GO TO AMJHARIYA

Thus only a few people were given permission to go to Amjhariya; No Wt was allowed; not PA Vishokananda, nor GS, nor VSS in-charge. It was by invitation only. Those selected were ready to do whatever Baba wanted without any hesitation. Without permission nobody else was allowed to go. And it was not pre-announced that the new kiirtan program would be introduced. No such announcement was made at all. Everybody thought that this was going to be a time to rest; nobody knew the greater reason why Baba was going there. This was His liila.

Again this was quite unusual, because Baba would never make a program solely to take rest and it was unheard of to make a tour program where only few people are allowed. Normally there was a huge crowd and all were welcomed. It was rare, even unprecedented, for Him to announce that He will take rest and no organisational work will happen.

THE SPECIFICS OF THE JOURNEY AND

THE PRESENTATION OF KIIRTAN

Baba started from Ranchi to Amjhariya at 2pm on Oct 7. He was accompanied by three margii volunteers, one cook, and one driver. They reached Amjhariya by 5pm. The next day, the local family acarya Brahmadevaji came even though he knew nobody was allowed to visit. He stood outside the campus around midday and was crying out, "Baba, Baba, Baba." Hearing this Baba asked, "Who is that?", and later Baba granted him permission to come inside.

First Baba created the siddha mantra - Baba Nam Kevalm - and He explained it to those who were around. Then He told them to sing.

Around this time, the above mentioned family Acarya Brahmadeva went back outside to the surrounding area and told margiis to gather people, He said, "We must start chanting Baba Nam Kevalam by 12 midnight. Initially the kiirtan started with only a small handful of margiis; gradually more and more margiis who lived locally came. But no wts were present as they were not allowed to attend.

KIIRTAN SIDDHI

When kiitan got started then Baba gave a demonstration of kiirtan siddhi. Those present heard how the kiirtan melody was emanating from the air, water, space, and from all kinds of sounds like the barking of dogs, the chirping of birds, the movement of animals, and the noise of vehicles. In each case those sounds changed directly into kiirtan.

Where there was no sound, then that melodious kiirtan was even resonating from space. And when they blocked their ears then from inside the mind they could hear kiirtan was going on. It was divinely intoxicating and purely Baba's blessing.

Baba explained that the siddhi in first lesson is hearing omnkara dhvani; and gaining siddhi in dhyana means seeing Baba everywhere in everything.

Similarly there is siddhi in kiirtan as well. That occurs when one can hear the melodious, low-pitch of divine Baba Nam Kevalam kiirtan everyhwere, in all directions, without even chanting it. Just it is resonating from all places; that is kiirtan siddhi.

That time so many got samadhi in kiirtan chanting.

In the ensuing months, Baba gave many demonstrations in DMC and people were ecstatic singing kiirtan. Baba was giving so much vibration that everyone started jumping up and down. No one could sit idle. This was especially true in the case of the DMC at Muzzafarpur (1971) as well as countless other DMC's. Where kiirtan was held,  people got great spiritual urge and our Baba Nam Kevalam kiirtan spread like wildfire...

People realised that kiirtan is powerful.

SUMMARY

Kiirtan is very important for the common mass - for everybody. That is why Baba has graciously given kiirtan; verily Amjhariya was the best place to introduce kiirtan at that moment in time (1970).

From an historical perspective day and the place is important but from spiritual perspective we must always remember that kiirtan can be done anywhere and everywhere. It will always be beneficial.

I appreciate those starting the program noted below from a historical perspective. It is positive program that brings Parama Purusa one step close to the heart.

Namaskar,
Mahendra

PRABHAT SAMGIITA

"Tumi ekat'u ka'che eso, a'r ekat'ukha'ni heso..." (PS 1909)

Purport:

Baba, please grace me by coming a little more close, and please smile a little softly. Baba, by Your grace, my penance to get You will remove the cimmerian darkness of my mind. That I know. And please shower your sweet and charming smile like a full moon.
I know this cimmerian darkness of my mind is not eternal. So much mental
blackness and stains, hundreds of times comes and goes from my mind. Yet this deep, all around pitch darkness, pervading everywhere, will leave while keeping its head low in defeat. Baba, You love the divine effulgence-- not the darkness.
By Your grace, I will not accept defeat at any cost. I will remain holding only Your lotus feet. Whatever people may say, whatever may happen, I will remain pure and blemishless, by Your grace. Baba, You are my beginning and my end-- You are my Goal.
Baba, please come close and grace me by Your divine love...

BABA SAYS

"Along with the theory of spiritual inheritance one Cosmic Ideology will have to be adopted and that ideology is that one Supreme Entity-- the Cosmic Entity-- is the goal of all living beings. This spiritual sentiment will keep human beings united for all time to come. No other theory can save the human race." (To The Patriots)

Kettle Drum and Kiirtan

Subject: Kettle Drum and Kiirtan

Baba

"Mandrita manomohan mama, mu'rtta mamata' tumi..." (PS 662)

Purport:

O' Manomohan, O' most attractive One of my mind, You are mine and Your
voice is sweet and sonorous; O' most Compassionate One, You are the
embodiment of love and affection. By Your grace please shower Your divine
karuna on the afflicted person-- on me. Please wash away all my accumulated
sufferings as well as my bundle of samskaras. Baba, I have come to You and
am taking shelter at Your lotus feet. Please be gracious.

O' Baba, You are beyond maya-- You are mayatiita; yet, You are also the
Controller of maya-- You are mayadhiish [1]. Baba, with Your infinite
compassion You are the destroyer of all dangers, threats, and terror. Fear
itself is fearful of You. Baba, You are Kalus Ha'ri [2]; Baba, You are
Manobiharii-- You move joyously around the mind and make it blissful. Baba,
You are Marmarainjan and Manasrainjan [3]; You dye my heart and mind in
Your divine colour.

Baba, You are the object of my dhyana; You are the dearest One of my
heart. Baba, You are the essence of all songs and melodies which are sung
and chanted. Baba, with Your divine sword You pulverise the vanity of the
demons (deva'ri) [4]. Please remove my stagnancy and make me disciplined
for my all around enlightenment: physical, psychic and spiritual. O'
merciful One, please pardon me by removing by samskaras. Please shower Your
divine grace and make my whole existence vibrated and blissful.
Baba, I am at Your shelter; I do sastaunga pranam to You infinite times...

NOTES TO PRABHAT SAMGIITA #622:

[1] Ma'ya'dhiish: In the above song Baba simultaneously both far beyond
ma'ya' (ma'ya'tiita) as well as totally involved in controlling ma'ya'-- in
which case He is Ma'ya'dhiish. Here below Baba is making a contrast between
jiivas who are ruled by ma'ya' and Parama Purusa who lords over ma'ya'.
Baba says, "Jiiva'tman is under the influence of Prakrti, it is
Ma'ya'dhiina or controlled by Ma'ya', whereas Parama'tman, in whatever form
He may manifest Himself is Ma'ya'dhiisha or Controller of Ma'ya'." (SS-1)

[2] Kalus'ha'rii: This is one of the names of Parama Purusa that reflects
one of His infinite qualities. In this role  as Kalusha'rii, He removes the
darkness from the mind of the jiivas. That is why in 2nd stanza of our Guru
Purja mantra it is said that He removes the stains of mind and bundle of
samskaras. By His grace He removes all the cimmerian darkness.

               Ajina'natimira'ndhasya jina'na'injana shala'kaya'.

Baba says, "You know that an eye ointment is applied with a stick
("Shala´ka´" means stick). Now, all the microcosms are parts of that
Noumenal Entity, all are actually parts and particles of that Supreme
Entity, but due to ignorance, due to the darkness of ignorance, they cannot
see what is what and which is which. That is why they require the ointment
of spiritual knowledge. Guru (with a stick) applies the ointment of
spiritual knowledge to their eyes." (AV-3)

[3] Ma'nasrainjan: Baba has told us countless times and we all know that
devotion is that unique ingredient which allows one to advance in the
spiritual field. Without innate love for Parama Purusa one can never
succeed. By Baba's divine grace, in His role as Ma'nasrainjan, He is that
Divine Entity who colours and saturates the mind of sadhakas in the
fountain of devotion. Baba says, "'rainjana', which means 'the One who
colours' - that which colours the mind." (AV-1) So He is that Cosmic Being
who graciously showers devotional love into the heart and mind of the
bhakta. And by such overwhelming Cosmic grace, the devotee becomes immersed
in Supreme bliss and comes in the closest proximity with that Love
Personified Entity: Parama Purusa.

[4] Deva'ri: (Deva literally means 'god'; ari literally means 'enemy'). So
those anti-social beings who are enemies of the gods are known as demons.
That is the why the colloquial meaning of the term deva'ri is 'demons'.

== KETTLE DRUM AND KIIRTAN ==

Note: With many retreats coming up in the various sectors, we should all
keep the following in mind.

Namaskar,
During our dharmacakras and retreats we all like to collectively chant
kiirtan. This is one of the most beautiful aspects of any Marga gathering.
And here below Baba describes the very special effect which happens when
A'nanda Ma'rgiis gather and sincerely sing kiirtan.

Baba says, "If even two or three people gather together, they can do
kiirtan collectively; if one thousand people assemble together, then also
they can do kiirtan. When you do kiirtan and move towards Parama Purus'a,
the Supreme Father, then in Parama Purus'a's mind also there will be a flow
of bliss, because so many minds are coming towards Him with love. He will
feel very happy. Seeing the bliss of His devotees, Parama Purus'a will also
become overwhelmed with joy, because of His enormous love for His devotees.
'How good these devotees are!' - He says. Parama Purus'a loves each and
everyone, but He loves those who do kiirtan still more. He will say to
them, 'Come, come, come, - come near to Me.' This is the proper way to
serve Parama Purus'a." (17 May 1982, Kolkata)

Thus by kiirtan there is a flow of bliss both in the bhaktas' minds and
also in the Cosmic Mind of Parama Purusa. And it makes any dharmacakra or
retreat into a deeply devotional and highly spiritual event.

So kiirtan holds a very special place in the heart of all Ananda Margiis.

LOUD DRUM BANGING IS A HINDRANCE

At the same time we have all seen how at some kiirtan sessions there are a
few people who begin to beat the drum very loudly. But this heavy and
strong banging on the drum is not conducive to the devotional flow of
kiirtan.

Baba says, "It is advisable to play some instrument during kiirtana. A
mrdanga [a soft kind of drum] or some similar instrument should be used,
but one should not play any heavy-sounding instrument like a dhak [a large
kettle drum played with sticks], a dol [a loud drum] or a gong. The mind
prefers to hear a sweet sound, like that of the mrdanga, than a harsh
sound. Some time ago I mentioned that Bhola Mayra said that when the cawing
of crows and the beating of drums stop, human ears get some relief. People
do not like to hear such harsh, unpleasant sounds. The sound of the mrdanga
may not be perfect, but it has one quality: it is very sweet. Thus,
whenever a distracted mind hears the sweet music of a mrdanga, it returns
to the proper place. A remarkable science lies in kiirtana." (AV-8, p.13-14)

So by Baba's above guideline it is clear that loud drum playing is not
helpful in our kiirtan programs-- rather those loud drums disturb the flow.
Because loud drums irritate the mind in which case one cannot feel the
sweet vibration of the kiirtan.

And sure enough this is something we have all experienced at one retreat or
another. Because we all like to attend our AM retreats and we all look
forward to the devotional flow of the kiirtan; but when one or two people
play a loud drum like the kettle drum then that ruins the devotional
vibration.

As Baba guides us it is far better to play a drum like the mrdanga which
has a gentle and sweet type of sound. Then in that soothing atmosphere the
mind can easily flow towards Parama Purusa and become immersed in His bliss.
So it is ok to use certain types of drums in kiirtan, just we should ensure
to play them softly. And side by side we should refrain from using big
drums like the kettle drum. Even if someone is loudly banging on a congo
drum then that too will be nothing more than a distraction.

Hence those playing the drums in kiirtan should choose a softer type of
drum that can be played in a sweet and gentle manner. In that way their
drum playing will complement the chanting of kiirtan and allow everyone to
move towards Him.

                         BABA'S BLESSING

By the proper chanting of kiirtan we will always feel that He is being
ever-gracious on us.

Baba says, "It is imperative for every intelligent person, every wise
person, every clever person, to always do kiirtana...And those who do
kiirtana should always remember that the hands of Parama Purus'a bestowing
blessing will always be with them." (16 May 1982, Kolkata)

Namaskar,
Parashram

Note:           ONE OTHER IMPORTANT FACT ABOUT KIIRTAN

Baba says, "While doing spiritual practice, spiritual sadhana, while
singing Kiirtan and dancing, we should remember the fact that all our
spiritual activities are just a dance around Parama Purusa, lessening the
distance...there cannot be any peace, any happiness, or any beatitude till
the aspirant comes in tactual contact with the Supreme Self." (AV-12, p.71)

        ******************************************
                     Capacity of A'tma

Baba says, "Till you have a human body go on doing great work. After death
in absence of the brain the mind cannot function in which case one cannot
do anything. But the unit consciousness (atma) can still work. It has the
capacity to work in subtle form." (Delhi DMC 1984 Discourse)
