Why Dadhiici Divasa

Namaskar,
The day of Dadhiici Divas is almost upon us: March 5. This occasion holds special significance as dharmic sadhakas laid down their lives for the great cause of Ananda Marga ideology. This is a day to honor all those who sacrificed; it is also a time to remember the unprecedented dedication it took to establish Ananda Marga ideology. It is about the rise of bhagavad dharma on this earth.

As we all know, prior to '90, under Baba's direction, many great deeds were done. Along the way, many gave their lives for the great cause of dharma. We should reflect upon those sacrifices done for the sake of ideology and take up the vow that once again we should protect and propagate this grand Ananda Marga ideology.

Bear in mind that, the next part in this series  addresses how a dadhiici differs from the Christian concept of martyr and the Muslim approach of shahiid. That letter will also list the names of those dadhiicis in Ananda Marga who sacrificed their lives for bhagavad dharma.

That fateful day

Here is an in-depth look back at the events which transpired on that fateful day of 5 March 1967, as well as the events leading up to it.

As is commonly known our Ananda Nagar was first started on over 1000 acres of land in Baglata, Purulia District West Bengal in 1964. And that time so many beautiful projects and programmes were started to materialise Baba's vision. There were primary schools, a college, a medical clinic, a children's home, etc. Many great projects were going on.

But by 1967 serious resistance started to come from the nefarious communist party - CPI(M). Those days the CPI controlled the entire local Purulia area and they had a wicked grip on the West Bengal Govt by controlling many high positions.

So now we can see how the tensions were mounting those days. Because on the one hand due to selfless service by our Marga wholetimers, Lft’s, margiis in & around Ananda Nagar, the local people / villagers were getting benefited and were coming close. And the villagers began to see how the CPI was exploiting them.

In reaction, the CPI(M) began to instigate local movements to conspire against Ananda Marga. To that end, members plotted and convinced local BDO Ashok Chakravarty against our Ananda Nagar ashram. Then in Aug 1966 this BDO (Block Development Officer) came to our ashram saying he wanted to be a member of the controlling body of our Ananda Marga Degree College.

Conspiracy was hatched

When it was explained to the BDO that unfortunately he (BDO Chakravarty) did not meet our ashram's regulations for such a position, then the BDO became quite furious and irate. Certainly, he was not acting on his own; rather the BDO was just the front-man for the communist party. Then to counter-attack and get revenge, BDO returned in Feb 1967 demanding for our Marga to support the local communist candidate in the General Elections. So our WT & margii brothers and sisters humbly explained about our socio-spiritual approach and told that we do not support any political party, per se. In that circumstance this negative BDO was determined for revenge. In truth that BDO was but a pawn of the ruling communists.

The communists began an intensive campaign started to defame Ananda Marga among Purulia locals. And one serious plot was hatched to attack our Ananda Nagar ashram. No doubt local people had developed good relations with our Ashram due to the different service projects. But communist cadres were determined to undermine that good will.

And together with the BDO they sabotaged our relation with the villagers through numerous underhanded and conniving plots and ploys.

For example the communists and the BDO secretly slaughtered many cows and stealthily spread those remains around the villages in the middle of the night. And they spread the false rumours that the Ananda Marga ashramites were responsible for the nefarious work. In result, Hindus were furious since they worship the cow as a goddess. And the CPI(M) misguided the Muslim villagers that these Hindus had been driven out of Pakistan and settled in Purulia with deep hatred toward Muslims, and that they would surely be stealing all their land.

So after drumming up sufficient nasty hatred among villagers, the CPI & BDO held another meeting in Susundi village on March 3rd 1967. And they made all the Hindu and Muslim CPI supporters present that day to swear by oath on the Mahabharata and Koran to remove Ananda Marga sadhus by any means, including murder.

And fifth March was decided to be the day to carry out their dark plot. It was known by all, including Ananda Nagar ashram residents, all Purulia gov't and police officials and West Bengal gov't that the event was planned.

Armed communist thugs attacked Ananda Nagar

Certainly Ananda Marga sannyasis appealed to both the Purulia gov't and to police multiple times for protection and security from the oncoming doom. But all of those appeals were ignored. And just one skeletal, paltry force of police was assigned to the ashram grounds. That was the night of March 4th but it was all only to make a show etc. Proof being that by three o'clock in the morning of 5th March, Ananda Nagar was declared as being safe by chief of police. So he left to go back to Purulia, leaving behind only a small show of around thirty men.

But that too was only in show, as in morning when attack came, not one policeman raised his hand. And that terrible day of 5 March 1967, thousands of armed communist supporters arrived on the scene goaded by the hatred inculcated by CPI workers. And in that fury the CPI hitmen swept through our Ananda Nagar ashram, destroying everything in sight.

On their horror-stricken path, hundreds of Ananda Nagar residents were seriously wounded and five were struck dead with mortal wounds.  And not just killed, but butchered & mauled. Here is listing of those five victims who fought bravely to defend Ananda Nagar & Ananda Marga way of life: Dadas Abhedananda, Sachidananda, Ac Bharat Brc, Ac Prabhash Brc, and Ac Avadhesh Brc.

Altogether, 5th March 1967 is a day never to be forgotten in Ananda Marga history - a day to recognise those who died for bhagavad dharma.

Baba's eternal guidelines

On the occasion of this coming Dadhiicii Divas, we should reflect on its special significance and adhere strictly to Baba's dharmic codes and teachings and establish Ananda Marga ideology. Please see

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "Fight for your Ideology. Be one with your Ideology. Live for your Ideology. Die for your ideology." (1)

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "Life represents Ideology. Life should be sacrificed for the Ideology." (2)

Namaskar,
Surrendering to Him,
Gurucharan Deva

A day to remember all dadhiicis

Since that fateful occasion, many have come forward in our Marga and sacrificed their lives for the cause of bhagavad dharma including the terrible murder of 16 wholetimers and 1 family margii in broad daylight in the early 80's, and after that also all such persons who sacrificed for the special cause of bhagavat dharma are honourably called as Dadhiicis. March 5 is in their memory as well.

OUR SANSKRIT / SAMSKRTA NAMES

Little by little we should all be accustomed to following Baba's below guideline and begin at least by using Deva when we sign our emails.

Baba says, "The word deva should be suffixed to the name...the more the usage of deva as a title, the better it is. The Sanskrit name should be used in all worldly dealings." (Caryacarya-1)

THERE MUST NOT BE MANY DADHIICI DIVAS

Recently (03 feb 2013), margii T wrote with great anticipation about setting up an observance on April 9 of this year in memory of the 40th anniversary of Dadhiici Ac Divyananda Avt who self-immolated on that day in 1973.

Margii T wrote: "I will further state that on April 9 will be the 40th anniversary of the Self-immolation of Mahadadhici Ac Divayananda Avt. I ask any those Ranchi margis who are angry at the programme being done by Tiljala margis to please organize a public programme near the old Legislative Building (Vidhan Sabha) to honour the self-immolation of this true disciple of our Baba." (Margii T, 03 Feb 2013)

Actually this type of issue first came up after the 30th April massacre at Bijon Setu, Kolkata. That time many Bangla-speaking Wts requested Baba to change Dadhiici Divas from 5th March to 30th April. They reasoned that only 5 were killed on 5th March, whereas 17 were murdered on 30th April.

Baba gave His reply. He told that keeping Dadhiici Divas on 5th March is proper - all will be honoured on that date. So everyone understood the spirit and letter of Baba's response. There were no more questions. 5th of March is the fixed date for observing Dadhiici Divas, regardless of any other past or future events.

The only thing that does happen on 30th April is a protest. But that is not a remembrance or honouring of the murdered Wts, nor is it called as Dadhiici Divas or Dadhiici Divas #2. That protest is done because still the case has not been resolved.

The request by Dadas to change the date to 30th April is very similar to the situation with the Jains. The Jains did not have any social service projects so they misdirected their entire wealth, time, energy, and resources in constructing temples because they did not know what to do other than that. Similarly, when some in AM do not have any committed work or social service project in mind, then they think every single sacrifice should be observed independently. Then there will be a maximum days for Dadhiici Divas programs.

We all know that Baba has graciously given 05 March as the singular day to honour and recognise the sacrifice of all Dadhiicis. Baba wants all Dadhiicis to be celebrated and honoured on the same day. So many have sacrificed and given their lives for the growth and prosperity of Ananda Marga, i.e. for the great cause of bhagavad dharma, and all should be remembered each year on 05 March. That is the official day of Dadhiici Divas as given by Baba.

Thus it is very curious why anyone would even think to observe other dates like April 9 etc. Ultimately, ours is a man-making mission. Our duty is to follow Ananda Marga ideology and follow Baba. To this end, there are  diverse and dynamic plans and programs to manifest.  We must serve suffering humanity in so many ways. That will all be put on hold if we start observing multiple Dadhiici Divas celebrations each year; that would start a trend whereby soon there will be 365 days of Dadhiici Divas celebrations. Clearly, this is not what we should do.

Best is to follow Baba's stated declaration to remember all who sacrificed for the great cause of ideology on 05 March - that is our singular occasion to honour those who gave their lives for bhagavata dharma.

Tamasik Leafy Vegetable: Red Puiṋ Shak

Here Baba guides us that the red, leafy puin shak (vegetable) is "bad for the mind" and hence tamasik.

"Some of you have possibly seen that there is a creeping leafy vegetable plant called puiṋ shák [Indian spinach] … slightly wild, and its leaves are small and blackish. This kind of puiṋ is called buno puiṋ [wild variety]. Although its nutritional value is as good as that of any other puiṋ, it is not good for patients suffering from acidity. Although all kinds of puiṋ have more or less the same qualities, it is the white puiṋ or puiṋ with light green large leaves that is relatively easy to digest. The wild puiṋ is bad for acidity, as the red puiṋ is bad for the mind." (Shabda Cayanika - 4, Disc: 24, pt #33)

This red, leafy vegetable (puin shake) is found throughout Asia and is sold around the globe in Asian vegetable markets. However, as Ananda Margiis we should not ingest puiṋ shak as it is tamasik.

It should also be noted that in our Ananda Marga books, it is spelled two different ways:
(1) Puiṋ
(2) Puni

The first spelling is correct, i.e. puiṋ, and that is the way it is spelled in the above quote.

The second listing - i.e. puni - is not correct. That is not the proper spelling, yet it is written that way in some of our publications. See the below quote as an example.

The key point to keep in mind is that it grew ouy of rotten matter. So, although many communities treat this as a good vegetable, but for Ananda Margiis red puiṋ shak is tamasik and therefore avoided. This is commonly missed because sadhakas think that every leafy vegetable is sentient, but that is not true. Red puin shak is one such example.

"Static food: Food which is harmful for the mind and may or may not be good for the body is static. Onion, garlic, wine, stale and rotten food, meat of large animals such as cows and buffaloes, fish, eggs, etc., are static. Very often people eat food without knowing its intrinsic qualities. For example, the milk of a cow which has just given birth. Or white eggplant, khesárii pulse [horse gram], red puni [Basella rubra Linn.], or mustard leaves, all of which often grew out of rotten matter. In order to have a balanced mind and to progress spiritually, human beings will have to pay attention to the qualities of the food they eat. The idea that “I will just do my sádhaná and eat any food, proper or improper” will not do." (Ananda Marga Philosophy In A Nutshell: Food, Cells, Physical and Mental Development)

I am singing Prabhat Samgiita to please You

"Gán geye jái tomár tare shunabe tumi ei ásháte..." (Prabhat Samgiita #4799)

Purport:

O' Parama Purusa, You are ever resplendent. On this moonlit night by Your grace I have lit the lamp of devotion and am sitting here surrounded by the vast darkness of my reactive momenta (samskaras). In this ambience I am practicing Prabhat Samgiita, again and again - to please You. I sing on and on with this hope: That You will grace me by listening.

Baba, theoretically I know that You are with me always and that You are my my eternal Sakha' [1], but still I wonder what type of relation is this of ours. You never spend time with me, & You never speak with me. Just You keep me all alone. And in that desperate state I become utterly dry inside and I think that without You my entire life is like the burning desert, with no relief in sight. Without You by my side, in Your absence, I am completely miserable. Please grace me by coming.

O' my dearest One, please give me a sign that You are listening to the calling of my heart. Parama Purusa, please come and tell me whether You are listening or not. After that, You are free to go wherever You like. O' my dearmost Baba, please be gracious and shower Your sweet smile directly in my mind so that it makes a permanently blissful impression - imprinted forever in my memory - like wonderful colours and decoration of alpana' [2].

Baba, please be ever-gracious and reside always in my mental abode - up till eternity...

Notes for Prabhat Samgiita #4799

[1] Sakha': Ananda Marga ideology says, "'Samapra'n'a'h sakha' smrtah'. Where love and devotion are so overwhelming that it appears as if there is only one entity in two bodies, such a pair of persons is known as 'sakha''. The bhakta, the devotee, is the sakha of Parama Purus'a, because the bhakta can never think of himself as a separate entity from Him. Here he altogether forgets that he is separated from God. That is why Parama Purus'a is also a sakha' to His bhaktas and the bhakta is the sakha' of Parama Purus'a." (1)

[2] A'lpana': These are the colourful motifs, sacred art, or decorative painting done on a horizontal surface (walkway, patio etc) on auspicious occasions. Those who have attended DMC might have witnessed how on the walking path across the stage leading up towards Baba's dais there are some very decorative, colourful, attractive designs. In an artistic manner there is brilliant array of flower pollen, flower petals, or any colorful scented fragrance which are soft and upon which someone can walk comfortably. This beautiful and colourful decoration is known as a'lpana' and it is meant to pay high respect and adoration to the Divine Entity. In our Marga this is used for Baba's holy and auspicious arrival. In common social settings and religious life the general population makes such decorations for the arrival of any respected guest. It is also employed in the temples.

India’s inferiority complex

Namaskar,
We know that the Prout samaj theory is a broad-minded approach whereby all get the opportunity to rise up and progress. In this way people escape from the noose of various complexes, most notably inferiority complex. The creation of samaj movements is one unique method whereby the whole humanity can develop simultaneously in a complementary fashion.

How exploiters inject an inferiority complex
to establish their own superiority

If one studies the basis of the formation of samajas and their criteria, then one can understand that without the formation of samaj, repressed ethnic populations and the exploited mass will never be able to enjoy freedom in the social sphere. Because exploiters inject various inferiority complexes in the mind of the community which they want to exploit.

For example when the Britishers first started invading India then they suppressed the local language so that the common public was unable to express their grievances to their local government offices. The immediate effect was that the local people began suffering from an inferiority complex: 'I am illiterate, I do not know the basic thing; I am lowly.’ By injecting the superiority of the European language and culture, an inferiority complex was created in the minds of the Indian common mass.

Furthermore, the local customs, manners, behaviors, songs, dance, drama, and all local cultural expression which had high moral value were treated as low in the eyes of the British administrators. So Britishers injected their own films, cultures, manners, styles, and the result was that the inferiority complex became so deep rooted in the Indian population that even today in this 21st century if any person has a Masters degree in Sanskrit then they feel inferior to someone who speaks just a single sentence of English.

When people suffer from an inferiority complex then they lose self-confidence and self-worth. They feel all their own local customs, manners, behaviours, and culture are low. And they prefer to follow the way the exploiters live, eat, and adhere to whatever customs, manners, & behaviours those exploiters do. So due to their inferiority complex, the common mass feels that everything that those exploiters do is great; and their own things are low.

In this stage it is very easy to exploit those suppressed peoples economically. This matter is detailed in the Prout discourse, 'Capitalism in the Three Spheres'

Shrii Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar - the Propounder of Prout - states that the chief solution is to instill self-confidence within the local people by developing their samaj. When local, ethnic people feel proud of their own language and customs, they will not suffer from inferiority complexes. And in that case the possibility of their getting exploited will be  diminished and eliminated.

How present-day India affected:
abandoning good things, adopting bad ones

For centuries, India safeguarded the dharmic teachings of the vedas, the Upanishads, and the Bhagavad Giita etc. But now due to an inferiority complex that was first imposed during British rule, the youths of today in India do not want to know anything about India's past. They want to become completely European / American. This is evidenced by their choice of food, drink, dress, dance, and manners etc - all of which are based on western pseudo-culture.

What Hollywood produces is copied by Indian youths. Their behaviour is a mirror image of Hollywood presentation. Our Indian youths do not like to follow anything that was told by the sages - i.e. taking sentient food, fasting regularly, embracing moral values, doing namaskar, wearing a laungota, using discreet dress, leading a God-centered life. Those things have all been eradicated, replaced by shaking hands, eating junk food, wearing underwear, walking in public in half-naked dress, embracing western material values, and leading a matter-centered life.

Always there are exceptions, so here we talking about the general trend in our Indian youths. And the root cause is that Britishers injected an inferiority complex that is so deep rooted that if today you ask any Indian about this, they will not understand what you are talking about - they will just get disgusted and reacted by your query. Such is the deep change that has occurred in the psyche.

Plus those Indians living overseas in the US or the UK etc have stopped using water and instead use toilet paper to clean their backside. They completely gave up their good habit of washing with water - though again there are always exceptions.

Furthermore, they like to talk in English, not in their mother tongue - this is especially the case in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Rajasthan etc. One other pervasive phenomenon, which happens throughout India and across many languages groups, is that when they talk in their mother tongue then they mix in English words and phrases. This happens in the north, south, east and west of India. They do this because they feel English is more prestigious than their own mother tongue. And that belief, i.e. that English is great and their language is lowly, is the effect of their inferiority complex.

Sadly, the new generation is so entrenched in an inferiority complex and so ashamed of Indian traditions, that they are eager to toss aside the good customs of India and adopt the harmful and bad habits of the dominant western pseudo-culture.

Here we are not preaching that everything from the west is bad. Rather it is notable that good traits should be adopted from anywhere. The key problem is that when one is hounded by an inferiority complex then they lose their viveka / discrimination. In that case, they adopt all the ills of the west. That is the tragedy at hand.

The remedy is to speak in their mother tongue and embrace their cultural heritage, and use their power of viveka (discrimination) to understand that not everything from the west is great. And finally, the people of India have to cultivate a sense of self-worth.

Prospect of total annihilation

Prout philosophy states, "Let us observe if there is a close relationship between language and socioeconomic progress and cultural development. I have already said that language is the vehicle of inner thoughts and ideas. Naturally it is inseparably linked with the Práná Dharma or fundamental characteristics of human beings. The way people can express their thoughts and ideas in their own mother tongue cannot be done in any other language. People feel uneasy when they speak in a language other than their mother tongue. If they constantly feel such uneasiness, their Práńa Shakta or vital energy will be disturbed. Consequently their vital force will be weakened. In such circumstance a sort of psychological crisis will occur in the collective mental body as well as in the individual mind. This will result in the emergence of inferiority complexes which will cause debility in the human mind. Those people whose language is suppressed loose their moral courage, initiative and power to protest. Ultimately a defeatist psychology develops in them, and as a group such people face the prospect of total annihilation." (1)

Namaskar,
in Him,
Brahmeshvar

~ In-depth study ~

What a fool he is! He cannot speak with grammatical precision

Prout philosophy states, "Let me make the matter of psycho-economic exploitation even more clear. Suppose a certain Hindi chauvinist has come to see you [a bhojpuri person]. When you speak to him, you will certainly speak in Hindi, and so will he. But he is speaking his mother tongue, whereas you are not. Perhaps ungrammatical Hindi words will come out of your mouth. But it is obvious that in your expression there may be some fundamental errors, and the use of words will not be precise and to-the-point. This will create a diffidence in your mind, a kind of inferiority complex, whereas the Hindi-knowing people may suffer from superiority complex. They may think of you, “What a fool he is! He cannot speak with grammatical precision!” But instead if you speak in your own mother tongue [bhojpuri], your expression will be grammatically correct. So when you speak Hindi you become somewhat inferior to those Hindi-speaking person and, talking advantage of our inferior position, they may exploit you economically. They should not be given this opportunity of psycho-economic exploitation. If this sort of psycho-economic exploitation is tolerated, if they are given the opportunity to exploit for long, they will become rulers and you will become their subjects. This is how psycho-economic exploitation is perpetrated; in the first stage the exploiters impose inferiority complex in your mind by creating psychic pressure. When your language is suppressed, you will feel mentally inferior and develop some psychic weakness. Taking advantage of this psychic weakness, the exploiters will continue their psycho-economic exploitation. So those who advocate the cause of Hindi thus pave the way for psycho-economic exploitation. Actually they are not your friends." (2)

Inferiority Complex of Vietnam, Morocco, Mexico, Philippines, South Africa, Zimbabwe

This type of inferiority complex is not exclusive to India but rather wherever Great Britain colonised this complex exists - and same is true with the former colonies of France, Portugal, Holland, and Spain etc. Where they imposed their culture then all their past colonies continue to suffer from this same type of inferiority complex. Their language and culture has been destroyed and they have wholly adopted the aggressor’s language and customs. Often, those former colonies do not even know their own history. On this point India is fortunate - as it has kept some of their own cultural heritage in tact. Primarily it is the youths of India who do not like to follow those cultural values due to their inferiority complex.

Samaj and groupism

A few people believe their Proutistic samaj to be the holiest - and that their samaj should rule over the others. They claim all this in the name of the Proutistic teachings on samaj. However, those who sincerely review the Prout samaj system will clearly recognise when any of the groups tries to make such claims, then that is groupism - not part of the samaj system.

Live with a new spirit

“That which renews human existence and makes it full to the brim and overflowing with the joy of living is termed a festival...Inspire all people to live with a new spirit like true human beings. Let it inspire them with the fact that all humanity is an indivisible entity. On this auspicious day this is my inner wish.” (Ananda Vanii #48)

****************************************** Future Humans-- Body Shape
Baba says, "The situation that will arise in the future as a result of humanity's ever increasing thirst for knowledge. To meet these developments the nerve cells and nerve fibres will have to become more complex. Consequently, the human cranium will become larger and the size of the head will increase. The hands and feet will become weaker and weaker and human beings may even lose the ability to walk...In the future, the legs will be used less and less and the capacity to move on them will decrease. The arms will become thin, and the head will become abnormally large." (AV-8, p. 8-9)
