Namaskar, By Baba's grace, the overall standard of Ananda Margiis is far better than that of the common people. This is not to say that the common people are bad or lowly - the statement merely reflects the plain fact that when one has been graced to get tantrika diiksa by the Sadguru and is following His dharmic teachings, then naturally that disciple will progress and rise above the level of the common people. Thus, when any margii breathes his last, it is not an ordinary occasion. It is mahaprayan - the departure of a respected member of society. Just as mahaprayan is used by Bengalis to portray the passing of a dignified leader or honoured person, that same mahaprayan term should be used with the passing of our respected Ananda Margiis. It is totally disrespectful to say a margii died - when the higher, more respectful term of mahaprayan is available. Of course Parama Purusa is eternal and never dies so there is no question of using the mahaprayan term with Him. But in the case of Ananda Margiis it is totally appropriate and deserved to use the term mahaprayan. Unfortunately one of our elder margiis recently passed: Dr. Satyanarayan Reddy of Nakrekal, the Secretary of Andra Pradesh State Committee, breathed his last (06 Jan 2010). With Dr. Reddy's great contributions to society, he deserves to be honoured by the term mahaprayan. But thus far, in the reports about his death, no such term has been used. No one in our Marga has publicly mentioned or refereed to "Dr Reddy's mahaprayan" - when in fact it is much deserved. Instead all the reports in our Marga use terms like "expired", "death", "passing" etc. But those do not convey the proper respect. Only those persons who have been blinded by Sarvatmananda's crude agenda of dogmatically applying the mahaprayan term to Baba fall in the aforementioned trap of not using mahaprayan in association with margiis. Sarvatmananda insists that mahaprayan be used with Baba, and the word death be used with margiis. Yet that is not at all correct: The mahaprayan term should be used with margiis, not with Parama Purusa. I hereby request that those esteemed margiis who pass be honoured appropriately, with at least the same level of respect given to acclaimed members of the general society. Senior margiis, like Dr Reddy, should not be publicly disrespected at the time of their passing by using the term "death" etc. Our esteemed Ananda Margiis have contributed greatly to the public welfare and they are most deserving of the title, mahaprayan. Very truly yours, Gurucharan * Mahaprayan: Many are aware that mahaprayan is the common term used in India and especially in Bengal to describe the death of an honoured or even ordinary person. In that way the newspapers of Bengal are regularly citing the mahaprayan of respected persons of society who died or passed away. Some may get confused and wrongly think that the word 'mahaprayan' is one extraordinarily devotional term to be used in association with Parama Purusa. But that is not at all the case. Rather to do so is only to undermine the eternal presence of Parama Purusa. That is why no devotees ever use the word 'mahaprayan' in reference to Lord Shiva or Lord Krsna. Because Lord Shiva and Lord Krsna exist eternally. Then there is no question of Their mahaprayan. And for those who need still more technical proof then all this can be clarified quite readily by referencing the dictionary. Specifically in the Samsad Bengali-English dictionary on page 742. Checking there it will be confirmed that the word 'mahaprayan' means death of a respected person.
